7,000 Hudson-Mohawk Valley (NY) Vital Records, 1808-1850
In the towns and cities of New York, prior to 1880, official records of marriage and death were rarely filed. Fortunately, newspapers can often be used to overcome this deficiency, as they contain a wealth of information about the marriages and deaths of local people. Moreover, newspaper notices of marriages and deaths often contain detail lacking in the more frequently sought cemetery, church, and town record books. The compilers of this book have joined forces to produce a list of 7,000 marriages and deaths--naming 20,000 persons in all--from fifteen newspapers of the Hudson-Mohawk Valley area, giving researchers a much-needed boost in their search for vital records.

The Logos As Reason, Word, and Love in the Theology of Joseph Ratzinger

release date: Jun 11, 2014
The Logos As Reason, Word, and Love in the Theology of Joseph Ratzinger
The Logos as Reason, Word, and Love in the Theology of Joseph Ratzinger explores the doctrine of the Logos as it can be found in the varied writings of Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI). Specifically, it articulates that the Ratzingerian Logos-doctrine holds that the Divine Word is revealed to humanity through Reason, the Holy Scriptures and the life of Jesus, and through the love of God found reflected in the Christian Church and the beauty of human life and dialogue.

The Sacred Heart Legacy

release date: Jul 01, 2005
The Sacred Heart Legacy
The Sacred Heart Legacy tells the history of the first African American Catholic congregation in the State of Michigan. It traces the origins of this congregation to the black Catholics of early Christianity and shows how this valiant group of people became the Sacred Heart parishioners, how they shook off the horror of US slavery and then progressed through the tumultuous years of segregation and disenfranchisement to the present day. It shows how the congregation began in the basement of St. Mary''s School, acquired safe haven at St. Peter Claver Church and then survived numerous challenges to its existence to arrive at a position of renown and influence as the Sacred Heart Parish in modern day Detroit. The parishioners, interviewed in 2004, tell in their own words what membership in the parish means to them. Their descriptions amount to a Greek Chorus whose voices support the conclusions that the author draws from his background as an organization psychologist. The book examines the role of the Church as a bureaucracy, concerned about its temporal existence, which must balance the demands of its several constituencies just as any other large, multinational organization must do. It also examines the role of the priest as a leader who must choose between organizational expediency and the Word of God in ministering to his flock. The book is, most of all, a celebration of the parishioners who have defied all odds to build themselves into a highly competent community of believers who are confident in their ability to carry on regardless of what the future holds. The Sacred Heart Legacy is, ultimately, intended to be a model for those who would combat the pernicious effects of the quest forwealth and power by adhering to the Word while collaborating with the disenfranchised of all races and creeds.

Breeden Electronics (A).

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Breeden Electronics (A).
Breeden Electronics USA is a start-up division of a German company. It plans to produce two products, both electronic signaling devices. Herman Klein, the division president, has asked his controller, Marlene Baer, to compute several breakeven sales figures as they assess the sales level that is necessary to meet the profit target established by the parent company. Baer must conduct several breakeven analyses and consider the impact on profit if production exceeds sales. This is the first in a series of three cases that can be used to explore the evolution of cost systems. The main issues of the three cases are as follows: in the A case, the company uses a traditional costing system. The main questions relate to breakeven analysis and the effect of inventory buildup on profit. The B case (UVA-C-2200) introduces the definition of activities, costing those activities, and computing product cost based on their use of the activities. The revised product costs are not dramatically different, but analyzing what causes the differences is important to discovering where ABC can provide valuable information. The C case (UVA-C-2201) takes place after the end of the year, when profits have been reduced by the need to take care of a growing and increasingly complex packing and shipping activity. The controller defines a new activity (order handling), computes the cost per order, and begins to revise the data on product profitability and to develop new data on customer profitability. Having discovered the high cost of handling each order, the controller now has good reason to work on activity-based management: making that process more efficient, and perhaps more customer friendly. The three cases can be used in three classes, or the A and B cases together in one class and the C case in a second class.

Xyberspace Consulting, Inc
Xyberspace Consulting, Inc. is reconsidering the allocation of the costs associated with its Training and Educational Services Group (TESG), a shared-services or support department to its user departments. Currently, the company uses a single departmental rate to allocate actual training costs to the user groups, using the user groups'' actual usage of TESG resources. The company is exploring whether it should allocate TESG fixed and variable costs separately, whether it should use budgeted or actual allocation rates and whether it should allocate costs based on budgeted or actual usage. This case is intended to give students exposure to allocating shared-services or support-department costs, understanding the implications of different allocation strategies, and evaluating whether and how allocation systems can facilitate strategy implementation.
