Tea of the Sages

release date: Mar 01, 1999
Tea of the Sages
The Japanese tea ceremony is generally identified with chanoyu and its bowls of whipped, powdered green tea served in surroundings influenced by the tenets of Zen Buddhism. Tea of the Sages is the first English language study of the alternate tea tradition of sencha. At sencha tea gatherings, steeped green leaf tea is prepared in an atmosphere indebted to the humanistic values of the Chinese sages and the materialistic culture of elite Chinese society during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Although sencha once surpassed chanoyu in popularity, it is now overshadowed by chanoyu, despite the existence of more than a hundred sencha schools throughout Japan. This exceptionally well-illustrated volume explores sencha''s philosophy and arts from the seventeenth century to the present. Introduced by Chinese merchants and scholar-monks, sencha first gained favor in Japan among devotees of the Chinese literati. By the early nineteenth century, it had become popular with a wide spectrum of urban and rural residents. Some took up sencha as a subversive activity in opposition to the mandated protocol of chanoyu. Others enjoyed sencha because of its connections with elite Chinese culture, knowledge of which indicated intellectual and cultural refinement. Still others relished it simply as a fine tasting beverage. Sencha inspired painters and poets and fostered major advances within craft industries from ceramics to metalwork and basketry. Sencha aficionados, many of whom became serious connoisseurs of Chinese art and antiquities, hosted some of the earliest public art exhibitions. Tea of the Sages opens with a chronological overview of tea in China and its transmission to Japan before situating sencha within the rich milieu of Chinese material culture available in early modern Japan. Subsequent chapters outline the multifaceted history of the formalization of the sencha tea ceremony, drawing upon sources such as treatises and less formal writings as well as analysis of tea gathering records, utensils and their prescribed arrangements, paintings, prints, and sencha architecture.

Creating an Environment for Successful Projects, 3rd Edition
Now in its third edition, this project management classic has been updated with an array of field-tested tools to help upper management ensure the success of projects within organizations. For over twenty years, Creating an Environment for Successful Projects has been a staple for upper managers who want to help projects succeed. This new edition includes case studies from companies that have successfully applied the approach, along with practical tools such as templates, surveys, and benchmark reports for savvy leaders who want to ensure project success throughout their organizations. The insights in this book will help management speed projects along instead of getting in their way. All too often, well-intentioned managers put roadblocks in the team''s way instead of empowering them with the tools they need to succeed. This approach to project environments, grounded in decades of research and practice, will help you make your organization the most project-friendly it''s ever been. Organizational changes rarely work unless upper management is heavily involved. Although project managers are most closely responsible for the success of projects, upper managers are the ones who ultimately create an environment that supports those projects. The way upper managers define, structure, and act toward projects has an important effect on the success or failure of those projects and, consequently, the success or failure of the organization. This book helps all managers understand the need for project management changes and shows how to develop project management as an organizational practice.

Faith and Power in Japanese Buddhist Art, 1600–2005

release date: Sep 30, 2007
Faith and Power in Japanese Buddhist Art, 1600–2005
Faith and Power in Japanese Buddhist Art explores the transformation of Buddhism from the premodern to the contemporary era in Japan and the central role its visual culture has played in this transformation. Although Buddhism is generally regarded as peripheral to modern Japanese society, this book demonstrates otherwise. Its chapters elucidate the thread of change over time in the practice of Buddhism as revealed in temple worship halls and other sites of devotion and in imagery representing the religion’s most popular deities and religious practices. It also introduces the work of modern and contemporary artists who are not generally associated with institutional Buddhism and its canonical visual requirements but whose faith inspires their art. The author makes a persuasive argument that the neglect of these materials by scholars results from erroneous presumptions about the aesthetic superiority of early Japanese Buddhist artifacts and an asserted decline in the institutional power of the religion after the sixteenth century. She demonstrates that recent works constitute a significant contribution to the history of Japanese art and architecture, providing evidence of Buddhism’s compelling presence at all levels of Japanese society and its evolution in response to the needs of new generations of supporters.

Begin with a Failed Body

release date: Sep 15, 2017
Begin with a Failed Body
This collection of poems begins rooted in the landscape of the U.S. South as it voices singular lives carved out of immediate and historical trauma. While these poems dwell in the body, often meditating on its frailty and desire, they also question the weight that literary, historical, and religious icons are expected to bear. Within the vast scope of this volume, the poems arc from a pig farmer’s funeral to Georges de la Tour’s paintings and Toni Morrison’s Beloved. With an ear tuned to the lift and lilt of speech, they wring song from sorrow and plant in every dirge a seed of jubilation. Rich in clarity and decisive in her attention to image, Natalie J. Graham writes resonant, lush poetry.

Explosive Shocks in Air

release date: Nov 11, 2013
Explosive Shocks in Air
A purpose of science is to organize diversified factual knowledge into a coherent body of information, and to present this from the simplest possible viewpoint. This is a formidable task where our knowledge is incomplete, as it is with explosions. Here one runs the risk of oversimplification, naivete, and incom pleteness. Nevertheless a purpose of this work is to present as simply as possible a general description of the basic nature of explosions. This treatise should be of interest to all who are working with explosives such as used in construction or in demolition work, in mining operations, or in military applications. It should also be of interest to those concemed with disasters such as explosions or earthquakes, to those involved in civil defense precautions, and to those concemed with defense against terrorists. That is, this material should be of interest to all who wish to utilize, or to avoid, the effects of explosions as weil as to those whose interest is primarily scientific in nature.

Deflection of Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Construction Loading

Deflection of Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Construction Loading
An analytical model to calculate long-time flat plate deflection under early age construction loading is developed. Immediate deflections are calculated using an elastic finite element program, modified to account for the effects of cracking due to applied loads and restrained shrinkage. Individual creep curves that reflect the loading age of concrete are superimposed to obtain total creep deflection. Overall long-time deflection also includes shrinkage warping effects. Prediction by the model of deflections measured for three flat plates is satisfactory. From a model parameter study, the degree of panel restraint and early age loading are identified as important factors when calculating long-time deflection. Based on the proposed model and parameter study, a revised set of long-time deflection multipliers is recommended to account for early age construction loading.

Influence of Airfoil Trailing-edge Angle and Trailing-edge Thickness Variation on the Effectiveness of a Plain Flap at High Subsonic Mach Numbers

Influence of Airfoil Trailing-edge Angle and Trailing-edge Thickness Variation on the Effectiveness of a Plain Flap at High Subsonic Mach Numbers
The effects of variation of trailing-edge angle and trailing-edge thickness on the lift characteristics of a 10-percent-chord thick symmetrical NACA airfoil section with a 25-percent-chord plain flap are appraised from wind-tunnel tests at Mach numbers from 0.3 to 0.9 and Reynolds numbers varying correspondingly from 1 to 2 million. The airfoil trailing-edge angle was varied from approximately 18 to 6 degrees, and the trailing-edge thickness from zero to the thickness at the flap hinge line.

Determination and Analysis of Numerical Smoothing Weights

Determination and Analysis of Numerical Smoothing Weights
Mathematicians have known the theory of mathematical transformations for several centuries. Electrical engineers and other related performers have applied versions of this theory extensively. Numerical analysts who want to know the truth about numerical smoothing find it necessary to get involved in mathematical transformations. Numerical smoothing weights and other weight functions that manipulate numerical data are now being derived through the use of mathematical transformations. In this paper Fourier transformations are used to derive and analyze sets of numerical smoothing weights.

Prolonged and Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation in Children

release date: Dec 19, 2024
Prolonged and Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation in Children
This book comprehensively reviews the concept, epidemiology, management strategy, possible therapy and future considerations of children requiring continuous ventilatory support. The chapters discuss both invasive and non-invasive therapy, and the transition from hospital to home ventilation, complications, management of tracheostomy and much more. The book offers insight into ways of reducing the number of children requiring mechanical ventilation and how to manage the complicated situation when it happens. As science advances, the population growth, lower mortality, and increasing complexity of diseases have boosted up the number of patients requiring prolonged breathing assistance with mechanical ventilators. However, there is a few cases in one center with children requiring such intensive care medicine, and so there is no agreed-upon management strategy. This book brings together information and experiences from around the world aiming to improve the quality of medical care and to create a foundation for a clear and effective guide to healthcare professionals. Prolonged and Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation in Children is edited by pioneering scientists and chapters are contributed by international experts. It is thought-provoking for pediatricians, general practitioners, family physicians, nurses and medical staff in pediatrics, pediatric pulmonologists, intensivists and many more associated with hospital and home ventilated cases. u200b

Isolation and Structure Elucidation of Bioactive Secondary Metabolites from Microbial Sources

release date: Jan 01, 1994
Isolation and Structure Elucidation of Bioactive Secondary Metabolites from Microbial Sources
Microbial organisms often produce biologically active and chemically intriguing secondary metabolites. To isolate and characterize compounds of novel activity and structure, bioassay- guided fractionations were employed on a variety of natural products sources. Active compounds were characterized by spectroscopic analysis and X-ray diffraction methods. As a result of these studies, six projects were completed, resulting in the purification of a diverse range of compounds containing activity in a variety of assays. A coumarin and parahydroxyphenylethanol were determined to possess phytotoxic activity from fungal pathogens. Two novel C-glycosidic compounds from a bacterial plant pathogen were found to be the first low molecular weight elicitors of the hypersensitive response in plants. A verticillin of the epi-polythiodiketopiperazine class isolated from a soil fungus was discovered to be responsible for inhibition of ras farnesylation transferase. Leafcutter ants were found to be deterred by the presence of a novel sesqualterpenoid in epiphylls. Finally, inhibitors of the PDGF receptor were isolated and characterized from a lichen.

A Geography of Heritage

release date: Jan 01, 2000
A Geography of Heritage
This new textbook explores the various components of heritage: how it may be defined, who it belongs to, and its diverse cultural and economic roles and uses. Although heritage is a concept which has inspired considerable literature, there is currently no existing overview which places heritage in a geographical perspective. By applying the subject to the study of contemporary human geography, the authors examine the social and political tensions which result from conflicting interests relating to the production and consumption of heritage. Studying heritage at a variety of scales ranging from the global to the local, this book draws upon examples and case studies from around the world. It is the first book to integrate studies of heritage from other areas such as tourism, cultural and economic geography into one whole, comprehensive treatment.
