Wenn der Dachs Fridolin nicht vom frechen Fuchs Isolein aus seiner schönen, behaglichen Höhle im Hullerbuschwald vertrieben worden wäre, hätte er der berühmteste und erfolgreichste Dachs werden können: nämlich das faulste, das griesgrämigste und einsiedlerischste Exemplar seiner Gattung. Aber nun muß er sich auf den Weg machen, eine ebenso schöne neue Wohnung zu finden. Dabei hat er die seltsamsten Erlebnisse: mit Tieren wie der dummen Kuh Rosa oder die wunderbare Entdeckung einer wohlschmeckenden Pflanze, die Fridolin Süßwachs nennt, die Zweibeiner aber Mais. Dieses köstliche Gewächs gedeiht auf dem Acker von Vater Ditzen, der mit Fridolins kulinarischen Exzessen gar nicht einverstanden ist. Die ganze Familie, schließlich auch die überaus artige Tochter Mücke, erklärt dem Dachs den Krieg. Fridolin wäre nicht beinah der faulste Dachs geworden, wenn es ihm, um seiner Ruhe willen, nicht gelingen würde, die Familie Ditzen an der Nase herumzuführen ... Hans Fallada schrieb diese Geschichte für seine Tochter Lore, genannt Mücke, zu Weihnachten 1944.

Märchen für kleine und große Kinder. Es waren die eigenen Kinder, zunächst Uli, dann Mücke und Achim, die die Geschichten des Vaters nicht nur hören, sondern auch lesen wollten. Hatte Fallada bisher Geschichten über Kinder geschrieben, so erzählte und schrieb er jetzt Geschichten für Kinder. "Immer, wenn eine neue fertig ist", berichtete er am 28. Oktober 1933 dem Freund Kagelmacher, "wird sie Uli vorgelesen, und es ist ihm sehr gut anzumerken, wie sie wirkt, was haftet, was verfehlt, was langweilt ..." Wie es sich für Märchen gehört, gibt es auch in diesen Geschichten die phantastischen Dinge, sprechende Tiere, Zauberer, Tarnkappen, Pechvögel, und hinter allen Turbulenzen eine handfeste Moral.
