La igualdad teórica concedida a la mujer por la II República no reflejó una realidad social, y fue solamente durante la guerra civil cuando hubo un intento serio en la zona republicana para extirpar actitudes tradicionales hacia la mujer, al ser estas actitudes un impedimento para su contribución al esfuerzo bélico. A partir de 1939 volvió a establecerse en los ámbitos oficiales el ideal tradicional de «la mujer en su casa». Este ideal no fue seriamente puesto en duda hasta los primeros años de la década de los sesenta, cuando las circunstancias económicas hicieron que dejara de ser viable.
