The Roman assemblies from their origin to the end of the Republic

release date: Jul 03, 2025
The Roman assemblies from their origin to the end of the Republic
The Roman Assemblies from Their Origin to the End of the Republic by George Willis Botsford is an exhaustive scholarly study tracing the development, organization, and functioning of Roman popular assemblies over nearly a millennium. The book meticulously explores the earliest political divisions of the Roman people, their military classifications, and the crucial role played by religious auspices in public and political life. Botsford provides detailed chapters on the different types of Roman assemblies—the Comitia Curiata, Centuriata, and Tributa—examining their structure, powers, and evolution. His analysis spans the elective, legislative, and judicial roles of these assemblies, charting how popular sovereignty expanded and contracted in response to social, political, and military pressures. The work also delves into the complex legislation passed by these assemblies during key historical periods, from the era of relative stability to the political upheavals associated with the Gracchi, Sulla, and the Republic’s final decades. Furthermore, it discusses the procedural norms, record-keeping, and calendar observances that governed Roman assembly meetings. This book is a vital resource for students and scholars of Roman history, political institutions, and classical studies, offering a comprehensive framework to understand the Roman Republic’s political culture and its legacy.

The Smoky God Or, a Voyage to the Inner World

release date: Mar 01, 2012
The Smoky God Or, a Voyage to the Inner World
The Smoky God, or A Voyage Journey to the Inner Earth is a novel of 1908 by Willis George Emerson, which is presented as a true account of a Norwegian sailor named Olaf Jansen, and explains how Jansen''s sloop sailed through an entrance to the Earth''s interior at the North Pole. It is notable as an early story about an underground civilization. For two years Jansen lived with the inhabitants of an underground network of colonies who, Emerson writes, were 12 feet tall and whose world was lit by a "smoky" central sun. Their capital city was said to be the original Garden of Eden. Later works by other authors, such as Agartha - Secrets of the Subterranean Cities, have identified the civilization Jansen encountered with Agartha (a mythical subterranean city), although Emerson did not use the name.
