"Mazeppa" is a 1819 narrative poem composed by the seminal English romantic poet Lord Byron. Based on a popular legend concerning the early life of Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709), it describes how the young Mazeppa had a love affair with a Polish Countess named Theresa during his time spent as a page in the Court of King John II Casimir Vasa. The Countess Theresa was, however, married and, upon discovering the affair, her husband punishes Mazeppa by stripping him and tying him to a wild horse. George Gordon Byron (1788 - 1824), commonly known as Lord Byron, was a British poet, politician, peer, and important figure of the Romantic movement. He is hailed as one of the most influential British poets and is continued to be widely read and influential. His most famous works include the poems "Don Juan" and "Childe Harold''s Pilgrimage." Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Childe Harold''s Pilgrimage is a lengthy narrative poem in four parts written by Lord Byron. It was published between 1812 and 1818 and is dedicated to "Ianthe." The poem describes the travels and reflections of a world-weary young man who, disillusioned with a life of pleasure and revelry, looks for distraction in foreign lands. In a wider sense, it is an expression of the melancholy and disillusionment felt by a generation weary of the wars of the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. The title comes from the term childe, a medieval title for a young man who was a candidate for knighthood.

The Vision of Judgment (1822) is a satirical poem in ottava rima by Lord Byron, which depicts a dispute in Heaven over the fate of George III''s soul. It was written in response to the Poet Laureate Robert Southey''s A Vision of Judgement (1821), which had imagined the soul of king George triumphantly entering Heaven to receive his due. Byron was provoked by the High Tory point of view from which the poem was written, and he took personally Southey''s preface which had attacked those \"Men of diseased hearts and depraved imaginations\" who had set up a \"Satanic school\" of poetry, \"characterized by a Satanic spirit of pride and audacious impiety\". He responded in the preface to his own Vision of Judgment with an attack on \"The gross flattery, the dull impudence, the renegado intolerance, and impious cant, of the poem\

George Gordon Byron (aka Lord Byron), later Noel, 6th Baron Byron of Rochdale FRS was a British poet and a leading figure in Romanticism. Amongst Byron''s best-known works are the brief poems She Walks in Beauty, When We Two Parted, and So, we''ll go no more a roving, in addition to the narrative poems Childe Harold''s Pilgrimage and Don Juan. He is regarded as one of the greatest British poets and remains widely read and influential, both in the English-speaking world and beyond. Byron''s notabilty rests not only on his writings but also on his life, which featured upper-class living, numerous love affairs, debts, and separation. He was notably described by Lady Caroline Lamb as "mad, bad, and dangerous to know." Byron served as a regional leader of Italy''s revolutionary organization, the Carbonari, in its struggle against Austria. He later travelled to fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died from a fever contracted while in Messolonghi in Greece.

This two-volume work of 1830, compiled by his friend Thomas Moore, reveals Byron''s character and provides a commentary on his writing.

The Legend of Don Juan has been told throughout the centuries. This romantic/adventure tale will delight the reader. Lord Byron was born in 1788 in England. He was a leading Romantic poet. Don Juan is one of his best known works even though it was unfinished at his death. Don Juan is a digressive satiric poem based on the legend of Don Juan. Don Juan was a womanizer but he also fell easily under a woman''s spell. In Byron''s poem Don Juan is portrayed in a more humorous way instead of as the tormented soul in previous works.

Byron was a superb letter-writer: almost all his letters, whatever the subject or whoever the recipient, are enlivened by his wit, his irony, his honesty, and the sharpness of his observation of people. They provide a vivid self-portrait of the man who, of all his contemporaries, seems to express attitudes and feelings most in tune with the twentieth century. In addition, they offer a mirror of his own time. This first collected edition of all Byron''s known letters supersedes Prothero''s incomplete edition at the turn of the century. It includes a considerable number of hitherto unpublished letters and the complete text of many that were bowdlerized by former editors for a variety of reasons. Prothero''s edition included 1,198 letters. This edition will have more than 3,000, over 80 percent of them transcribed entirely from the original manuscripts. Byron''s epistolary saga continues con brio in this volume. At the start of 1818 he sends off the last canto of Childe Harold and abandons himself to the debaucheries of the Carnival in Venice. At the close of 1819 he resolves to return to England but instead follows Teresa Guiccioli to Ravenna. In the meantime he writes three long poems and two cantos of Don Juan, whose bowdlerization he violently protests; he breaks off with Marianna Segati, copes with his amorous "tigress" Margarita Cogni, then falls passionately in love with the young Countess Guiccioli; he thinks seriously of emigrating to South America; he takes custody of his little daughter Allegra and becomes increasingly fond of the child. The Shelleys visit him, as does Thomas Moore, to whom he entrusts his memoirs (burned after his death). The letters to friends are a marvelous outpouring of funny anecdotes, practical talk, discussions of his poems, statements of his beliefs. The love letters are in a class by themselves.

Marchand began this project ten years ago.In the letters from Greece a new set of correspondents appears, and a new tone is apparent. Although occasionally playful, Byron is preoccupied with the revolution and his efforts to unite the Greeks in a common cause despite their discord. His chief correspondents are his business agents in the islands and his banker friend in Genoa, Charles Barry, to whom he writes frank accounts of daily affairs. His letters to Hobhouse and to John Bowring attempt to give a realistic picture of the Greek struggle. To Teresa Guiccioli he writes only short, dutiful postscripts in English to the longer letters addressed to her brother.Among the additional letters that became available too late to take their chronological place in the earlier volumes are those discovered in 1976, locked in a trunk at Barclays Bank; all but one of these fourteen letters were written to Scrope Davies, Byronâe(tm)s witty friend and drinking companion.
