Sci-fi příběh se odehrává na planetě Čúmm, kde se zástupci lidí snaží najít nový domov. Země je neobyvatelná a jen několika stovkám lidí se podařilo přesunout na Mars. Po roce života ale už začínají docházet přivezené potraviny a lidé mají problémy i s dýcháním. Část z nich se proto rozhodne odletět na novou planetu, kde žijí inteligentní bytosti, Žuriové. Je to planeta, kde je zakázáno vyvolávat emoce, především smích. Navíc místní obyvatelé nové přistěhovalce na planetě nechtějí. Lani a její rodina mají týden na to, aby Žurie přesvědčili, že lidé budou dobří, neagresivní sousedé.
