Licensing executives are at the cutting edge of product commercialization when that commercialization requires the use of external technology. LES members lead the way as the firm replaces the “not invented here” syndrome with the “invented anywhere” approach. There are various terms used to describe this activity. The most common is Open Innovation.

Examines whether two complementary firms working together can commercialize technology more effectively than either firm working alone; recognizes that in reality these relationships have had only limited success, perhaps because they focused on an event rather than a process. Sets out to identify factors that contribute to partnering success, particularly a goal that is relevant to both, mutual under- standing of strengths and weaknesses, clarity on the resources to be used, negotiating a comprehensive agreement (with an exit strategy), developing human relationships and integrating ''operating styles''.
