Hayek New Edition The very magnitude of the outrages committed by the National Socialists has strengthened the assurance that a totalitarian system cannot happen here. But let us remember that 15 years ago the possibility of such a thing happening in Germany would have appeared just as fantastic not only to nine-tenths of the Germans themselves, but also to the most hostile foreign observer. There are many features which were then regarded as ''typically German'' which are now equally familiar in America and England, and many symptoms that point to a further development in the same direction: the increasing veneration for the state, the fatalistic acceptance of ''inevitable trends'', the enthusiasm for ''organization'' of everything (we now call it ''planning''). The character of the danger is, if possible, even less understood here than it was in Germany. The supreme tragedy is still not seen that in Germany it was largely people of good will who, by their socialist policies, prepared the way for the forces which stand for everything they detest. Few recognize that the rise of fascism and the road to serfdom. Marxism was not a reaction against the socialist trends of the preceding period but a necessary outcome of those tendencies. Yet it is significant that many of the leaders of these movements, from Mussolini down (and including Laval and Quisling) began as socialists and ended as fascists or Nazis. In the democracies at present, many who sincerely hate all of Nazism''s manifestations are working for ideals whose realization would lead straight to the abhorred tyranny. Most of the people whose views influence developments are in some measure socialists. They believe that our economic life should be ''consciously directed'' that we should substitute ''economic planning'' for the competitive system. Yet is there a greater tragedy imaginable than that, in our endeavour consciously to shape our future in accordance with high ideals, we should in fact unwittingly produce the very opposite of what we have been striving for?

Este volumen reúne los tres en que esta obra se publicó originariamente y que Unión Editorial ofreció al público de lengua española con los siguientes títulos: Volumen I: Normas y orden ; Volumen II: El espejismo de la justicia social; Volumen III: El orden político de una sociedad libre; todos ellos, como en el original inglés, bajo el título general de Derecho, legislación y libertad. La publicación en tres volúmenes diferentes fue puramente circunstancial, como el autor explica en los respectivos Prefacios. En realidad, se trata de una obra fundamentalmente unitaria que ofrece "una nueva formulación de los principios liberales de la justicia y de la política económica", replanteando, en una nueva situación, el gran tema ya tratado magistralmente en su famosa obra The Constitution of Liberty. En la presente edición, en efecto, los tres volúmenes originarios se publican como otras tantas partes, con los mismos títulos, excepto la Tercera Parte, que aquí recibe el nombre de "El orden político de un pueblo libre" (no de una sociedad libre), que entendemos es más ajustado al título original inglés, no sólo en la letra sino también en el espíritu. A esta idea de una mayor fidelidad al original inglés responden los cambios efectuados en la traducción de toda la obra.

The Road to Serfdom is a book written by the Austrian-born economist and philosopher Friedrich von Hayek (1899-1992) between 1940-1943, in which he "warned of the danger of tyranny that inevitably results from government control of economic decision-making through central planning." He further argues that the abandonment of individualism and classical liberalism inevitably leads to a loss of freedom, the creation of an oppressive society, the tyranny of a dictator, and the serfdom of the individual. Significantly, Hayek challenged the general view among British academics that fascism (and National Socialism) was a capitalist reaction against socialism. He argued that fascism, National Socialism and socialism had common roots in central economic planning and empowering the state over the individual.Since its publication in 1944, The Road to Serfdom has been an influential and popular exposition of market libertarianism. It has sold over two million copies.The Road to Serfdom was to be the popular edition of the second volume of Hayek''s treatise entitled "The Abuse and Decline of Reason", and the title was inspired by the writings of the 19th century French classical liberal thinker Alexis de Tocqueville on the "road to servitude". The book was first published in Britain by Routledge in March 1944, during World War II, and was quite popular, leading Hayek to call it "that unobtainable book", also due in part to wartime paper rationing. It was published in the United States by the University of Chicago Press in September 1944 and achieved great popularity. At the arrangement of editor Max Eastman, the American magazine Reader''s Digest published an abridged version in April 1945, enabling The Road to Serfdom to reach a wider popular audience beyond academics.The Road to Serfdom has had a significant impact on twentieth-century conservative and libertarian economic and political discourse, and is often cited today by commentators.

V ní diskutuje teorii vzniku peněz, nedosažitelnost mezinárodního zlatého standardu, který hájil v monetárním nacionalismu, a v nejslavnější části knihy pak rozvíjí myšlenku konkurujících cenu-stabilizujících měn složených dle Hayekovy vize z košů nerostných surovin.
