Report from a Last Survivor

release date: Sep 01, 2024
Report from a Last Survivor
Fred Harris is the last surviving member of the Kerner Rights Commission, famously created by President Lyndon Johnson following the terrible riots, disorders, and violent protests that exploded in so many of America’s cities in the “long hot summer” of 1967. He is the last survivor of the 1964 “Four Back Bench US Senators,” which consisted of Walter Mondale of Minnesota, Joseph Tydings of Maryland, Fred Harris of Oklahoma, and Robert Kennedy of New York. He is also the senior surviving former member of the US Senate and one of two “last surviving” Democratic presidential candidates to run in 1976—the other being President Jimmy Carter Jr. Report from a Last Survivor tells Fred Harris’s many stories: some serious, some funny, and all true. Each story forms a part of this report of a last survivor, a long look back over ninety-three years and counting of a rich life of public service and personal commitment.

Adaptive Filtering for FMCW Interference Mitigation in PMCW Radar Systems

release date: Dec 05, 2020
Adaptive Filtering for FMCW Interference Mitigation in PMCW Radar Systems
A radar sensing system for a vehicle includes a transmitter, a receiver, a processor and an adaptive filter. The transmitter is configured to transmit a radio signal. The receiver is configured to receive radio signals that include the transmitted radio signal reflected from objects in the environment, as well as further including other radio signals transmitted from at least one other radar sensing system. The receiver is further configured to produce a sampled stream. The sampled stream is provided to the processor. The processor, responsive to further processing of the sampled stream, controls the adaptive filter to filter the sampled stream, such that the other radio signals transmitted from the at least one other radar sensing system are removed from the received radio signal.

Does People Do It?

release date: Oct 22, 2014
Does People Do It?
One of Oklahoma’s most famous native sons, Fred Harris faced life’s challenges with the same resolve as a favorite uncle: “Does people do it? If people does it, I can do it.” In this engaging memoir, he describes how he met those challenges head-on. A child of the Great Depression, Harris grew up in the small town of Walters, Oklahoma, where he was born in a two-room house. He describes that upbringing and his initiation into state politics, and tells how he was elected to the U.S. Senate at the age of thirty-three. As he recounts his experiences in national politics, he yields an insightful look at the turbulent 1960s and 1970s. Earning a reputation as a “new populist,” Harris chaired the national Democratic Party and was a serious presidential candidate. Along the way, he encountered such giants as Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, and Robert F. Kennedy. Enlivening his account with firsthand conversations, Harris contributes to our understanding of the motivations and personalities of these figures—including the infamous tensions between Johnson and Kennedy. Despite rubbing elbows with such power brokers, Harris maintained his own reputation as a down-to-earth man of the people whose advocacy included American Indian causes. Harris accomplished much in his distinguished career, championing human rights at home and around the world. His masterfully written memoir attests to a philosophical consistency and humane liberalism that today are all too rare.

The Arabic Scholar's Son
TO: Vice President Al J. Linear FROM: Asst. Director J. Long International Protection Agency. SUBJECT-1: Plague Vaccine. Preliminary reports tell us that a prototype of "SUN-RISE" was successfully constructed at the CDC. Unfortunately, there was no evidence of its remains once transport 7 arrived. There were also no survivors or any evidence of the plague''s origin after the explosion. Remaining citizens nearby believes that the outbreak was nothing more than an advance stage of Crane Syndrome. SUBJECT-2: Evacuation of Cherish Port. Startling information had landed on my desk early this evening. It seems that Professor Grounds wasn''t working alone on the design of the "Dark Plague." But, the mayor of Cherish Port himself is involved as well. Do we investigate?

Managerial-utility-maximizing Operating Decisions Under Compound Demand Risk

Managerial-utility-maximizing Operating Decisions Under Compound Demand Risk
This paper examines the demand and cost conditions under which utility-maximizing pricing-risk and advertising-risk relationships are determinate. The structure of the firm''s demand uncertainty captures both uncertain customer arrivals and uncertain individual customer demand. In addition to standard demand restrictions and constant marginal cost, determinate results depend upon the degree of managerial risk-aversion, the correlation between individual demand and customer arrival disturbances, the firm''s cost fixity, and bounded product differentiation effects of advertising. The symmetry between price-cuts and advertising as demand-increasing costs is extensively examined; firm equilibrium requires that prices-cust not be an inferior input for increasing demand.
