BAMBI is a delicious book. For delicacy of perception and essential truth I hardly know any story of animals that can stand beside this life study of a forest deer. Felix Salten is a poet. He feels nature deeply, and he loves animals. I do not, as a rule, like the method which places human words in the mouths of dumb creatures, and it is the triumph of this book that, behind the conversation, one feels the real sensations of the creatures who speak. Clear and illuminating, and in places very moving, it is a little masterpiece. I read it in galley proof on the way from Paris to Calais, before a channel crossing. As I finished each sheet I handed it to my wife, who read, and handed it to my nephew’s wife, who read, and handed it to my nephew. For three hours the four of us read thus in silent absorption. Daß ich heute gerade sechzig Jahre alt geworden bin, möchte mich freilich herabstimmen. Aber ich kann mir nicht helfen, ich bin ganz gut gelaunt. Und ich finde, es ist sehr hübsch, im Frühling Geburtstag zu haben, wenn es so warm wird, und wenn die Straßen nach frischen Blumen riechen. Was will man denn mehr? Ich bin spazieren gegangen, wie gewöhnlich. Zuerst durch die Innere Stadt, dann bei der Oper auf den Ring hinaus und wieder zurück. Dann bin ich noch im Kaffeehaus gewesen. Also sechzig Jahre. Am liebsten würde ich mit Stillschweigen darüber weggehen; weil es aber schon so lange meine Gewohnheit ist, daß ich bei solchen Anlässen gewissermaßen den Jahresschluß ziehe, und ein bisserl was aufschreibe von dem, was ich mir denke, will ich es auch heute nicht versäumen. Obwohl Denn viel habe ich ja kaum zu sagen. Da liegen in der Lade die Bogen aus all den Jahren, und wenn ich sie jetzt durchlesen wollte, würde vielleicht immer dasselbe drinnen stehen. Ich habe ein sehr regelmäßiges Leben geführt, und wenn man ein Junggeselle ist, gibt es nicht viel Ereignisse. Es ist nur, daß ich jetzt eine gewisse Scheu habe, diese Blätter in die Hand zu nehmen. Sie könnten mich am Ende in eine sentimentale Verfassung bringen, und das hätte keinen Zweck. Ich bin von dem schönen Tag noch ganz angeregt. Bald wird man auch wieder im Freien sitzen können. Auf dem Graben sind die zwei Kaffeehütteln schon hergerichtet; ein paar Tische sind sogar besetzt gewesen. Aber ich hab'' es doch noch nicht riskiert. Es war übrigens nicht zum Vorwärtskommen heute, so viel Menschen sind in der Stadt herumgelaufen. Und was man für schöne Mädchen sieht, das ist eine wahre Freude. Man weiß gar nicht, welche man zuerst anschauen soll. Gleich in ganzen Rudeln marschieren sie auf. Und wie reizend ist das, diese vielen jungen, rosigen Gesichter, diese lachenden Augen! Seit vierzig Jahren gehe ich jetzt Tag für Tag denselben Weg durch die Innere Stadt und über den Ring und immer seh'' ich diese vielen schönen Mädchen. Es ist unglaublich, wo die nur herkommen. Allerdings, die bleiben ja auch nicht ewig jung. Das darf man sich nicht einbilden. Denn sonst müßte ich ganz allein alt werden, und dafür tät'' ich mich doch schönstens bedanken. Aber das nimmt alles seinen geordneten Gang. Wenn man sich auch wundert. Ich hab'' das an der Baronin Ruttersdorf gemerkt, wie ich sie heute gesehen habe. Gott, wie die ausschaut! Ganz schneeweiße Haare hat sie schon, und recht zusammengebrochen ist sie. Ich bin stehen geblieben und hab'' ihr nachgeschaut. Seit dreißig Jahren zum erstenmal wieder.

Josefine "Pepi" Mutzenbacher ist der Name einer Wiener Prostituierten, die 1852-1904 gelebt haben soll. Ihre (vermutlich fiktiven) erotischen Memoiren erschienen erstmals 1906 in kleiner Auflage in Wien bei dem ungenannten Erotika-Verleger Fritz Freund unter dem Titel Josefine Mutzenbacher. Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne. Von ihr selbst erzählt. Das Buch erschien auf Subskriptionsbasis, um die damalige Zensur zu umgehen. Dieser Roman gilt seit seinem Erscheinen als ein Meisterstück erotischer Literatur, fand aber erst in den 1970er Jahren nach seiner Verfilmung durch den Regisseur Kurt Nachmann im deutschsprachigen Raum größere Verbreitung. Der Autor des Romans ist unbekannt; das Buch wird aber dem österreichisch-ungarischen Schriftsteller Felix Salten (u.a. Verfasser des später durch Walt Disney als Zeichentrickfilm auf die Leinwand gebrachten Kinderbuches Bambi) zugeschrieben. Da weder Autor noch Verleger wagten, Ansprüche auf Urheberrecht geltend zu machen, erschienen schon bald Neudrucke, Neuschöpfungen und mehrere Fortsetzungen unter dem Namen Josefine Mutzenbacher, die teils mehr, teils weniger obszön ausfielen. Das Original gilt laut Oswald Wiener als "der wohl einzige deutsche pornographische Roman von Weltrang", Teil 2 (Meine 365 Liebhaber) gilt als "erheblich abfallend", Teil 3 als "uninteressant".
