Auch für die Monotheismus- Forschung und den Problemkreis einer politischen Theologie ist "Heis Theos" bis heute von Bedeutung. 86 Jahre nach der Publikation der Dissertations- und Habilitationsschrift Petersons ist dieses über viele Jahrzehnte vergriffene Werk nun wieder in der originalen Fassung verfügbar. Christoph Markschies, Henrik Hildebrandt u.a. ergänzen Petersons Studien mit einem Überblick über die weitere Entwicklung der Heis-Theos-Forschung und mit einem umfassenden aktuellen Nachtrag seither aufgefundener Belege der antiken Formel in Epigraphik, Liturgie und Literatur. Die "Theologischen Traktate" Erik Petersons sind ein Klassiker der Theologie des 20. Jahrhunderts. In dieser Sammlung "finden wir alle jenen aufregenden, mit meisterhafter Konzentration und erstaunlicher Kenntnis geschriebenen Arbeiten wieder, deren jede bei ihrem Erscheinen ein Ereignis gewesen ist", schrieb Helmut Gollwitzer schon bei ihrem ersten Erscheinen 1951. Zwei der hier versammelten Traktate ¬- "Was ist Theologie" (1925) und "Die Kirche" (1928) ¬- stammen noch aus der protestantischen Zeit Erik Petersons und haben nicht nur ihrerzeit die Gemüter erhitzt; vielmehr sind ihre Spuren u. a. durch die Auswertung bei so unterschiedlichen Denkern wie Karl Barth oder Josef Ratzinger bis in die Gegenwart wirksam.

Die Publikation der Vorlesung Erik Petersons über fast den ganzen ersten Korintherbrief aus seiner Bonner Zeit (1924-1929) vervollständigt die Reihe seiner exegetischen Einzelauslegungen in den "Ausgewählten Schriften". Ergänzend enthält der vorliegende Band zentrale Teile aus Petersons Überblicksvorlesung zur paulinischen Theologie (1924/25 und 1926/27) sowie weitere kleinere Studien aus dem Zeitraum von 1915 bis 1950. Petersons prägnante Auffassung von Paulus als "Apostel der Ausnahme" bildet den einen, der "altchristliche Kirchenbegriff" den anderen Brennpunkt seiner auf charakteristische Weise, "dialetktischen" Auslegung des ersten Briefs an die Korinther. Dieser Brief gibt ihm die Gelegenheit, vor allem das frühchristliche Selbstverständnis der Kirche (Ekklesia), ihr Wesen und ihre Sakramente, ihre rechtliche Ordnung und ihren apostolischen Charakter in programmatischer Weise zu erhellen. Aber auch zu vielen anderen heute noch oder wieder aktuellen Themen bietet Peterson überraschende und mitunter provozierende Auslegungen: Dazu gehören beispielsweise seine kritischen Anfragen an die neuzeitliche Offenbarungstheologie, aber auch seine Ausführungen zur Äonentheologie und Eschatologie, zur Feier der Eucharistie, zum Verhältnis der Geschlechter in der Kirche, zu den Charismen und zum Wesen der Liebe (Agape). Peterson beweist durch die theologische Durchdringung der exegetischen und historischen Befunde "Mut zur Theologie" (Karl Kardinal Lehmann), was die hier edierten Texte über die exegetische Fachwelt hinaus auch für andere theologische Disziplinen interessant macht. Die fachkundige Einleitung von Hans-Ulrich Weidemann zeigt hier zentrale Anknüpfungspunkte für weitergehende exegetische und interdisziplinäre Diskussionen auf.

So bietet dieser Band die Chronik einer aufwühlenden religiösen Biographie zwischen 1910 bis 1960, abgerundet von Erinnerungen an Peterson aus der Feder vieler Weggefährten.

Begegnungen mit dem Römerbrief des Apostels Paulus gehören seit jeher zu den Marksteinen der Kirchengeschichte und des persönlichen Lebens. Die Bonner Vorlesungen Erik Petersons aus den Jahren 1925-1928 prägten bereits das theologische Denken des 20. Jahrhunderts. Doch erst Jahrzehnte nach dem Tod seines Ver fassers wurde "dieser fast legendäre und ebenso originelle wie provokative Kommentar endlich allgemein zugänglich" (Karl Kardinal Lehmann). Die Herausgeber haben die Manuskripte aus dem reichen Nachlass veröffentlicht und zu einem durchlaufenden Kommentar zusammengefasst. Erik Peterson greift in seinen engagierten Auslegungen Einsichten der zeitgenössischen Forschung und Theologie auf, ohne sich ihnen unkritisch auszuliefern. Auch heute noch halten seine Vorlesungen viele Anregungen bereit: sowohl für die theologische Fachwelt von Exegese, Dogmatik, Liturgie- und Rechtswissenschaft wie auch für geistig und spirituell interessierte Leser, die auf der Suche nach dem Zentrum des Glaubens auf differenzierte und sachlich fundierte Orientierungen nicht verzichten wollen.

Als "Marginalien zur Theologie" vereinigte Erik Peterson 1956 einige kleine Studien und Meditationen aus seinen reiferen Jahren in einem schmalen und bald schon raren Bändchen. In diesem, als Band 2 der "Ausgewählten Schriften" vorgelegten Sammlung, wurden noch andere, zum Teil schwer zugängliche kleine Arbeiten von ihm aufgenommen, wie z.B. seine konzentrierte Auslegung des Philipperbriefes und einige Miszellen zu den Engeln, der Musik und der Liturgie.

Sein Evangelium bietet Erik Peterson 1927/29 unzählige Anknüpfungspunkte, in die Tiefe theologischer Fra-gen vorzustoßen: Das Verhältnis des göttlichen Wortes zum Kosmos bewegt seine Auslegung ebenso wie die Frage, wie der Mensch in Gottesdienst und Sakramenten in eine neue, endzeitliche Welt einbezogen wird. Das Johanneische Schrifttum spielt für Peterson auch eine zentrale Rolle beim Werden des Neuen Tes-taments insgesamt: Das erweisen im vorliegenden Band bislang völlig unbekannte Vorträge aus Peter-sons römischer Zeit zur Entstehung des neutestamentlichen Kanons sowie zum Übergang von der mündlichen zur schriftlichen Überlieferung in der frühen Kirche. Inhalt u.a.: Johannesevangelium (Kap. 1 - 7,30) Die Entstehung des neutestamentlichen Kanons Papias von Hierapolis "An der Kralle erkennt man den Löwen", sagt eine alte Sentenz.
