Confessions of a Former Prosecutor
Once an Assistant Attorney General in Tennessee, Preston Shipp found his convictions challenged after teaching criminal justice courses to inmates from the Tennessee Prison for Women. He resigned from prosecuting and continued teaching. Soon after leaving, an exceptional individual, Cyntoia Brown, joined his class. Shipp believed she deserved a chance at redemption—only to receive an opinion on a years-old murder and robbery case in which he himself had argued for a life sentence for 16-year-old Cyntoia Brown. Out of guilt and empathy, Shipp embarked on a decade-long journey to free Ms. Brown and while traveling his own path to redemption. Today, he dedicates his efforts to the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, which has led to more than 1,000 people receiving a new chance at life after being sentenced to life imprisonment even though they were under the age of 18. Shipp shares his views on how the American justice system is in desperate need of reform, especially for juveniles.

What Are You Going to Do?

release date: Jan 02, 2024
What Are You Going to Do?
What Are You Going to Do? tells an inspiring true story. In the early 1950s, war scattered hundreds of thousands of orphans across South Korea. Many Koreans sacrificed everything to help. When Everett Swanson arrived to preach to troops on the front lines, he stumbled upon starving orphans. The plight of these children broke his heart. He faced the question: “What are you going to do?” Authors Matt Bronleewe and Eric Wilson tell how Swanson’s answer to those six little words led to the organization known today as Compassion International. Seventy years later, Compassion International sponsors over two million children all over the world, providing meals, education, vocational training, Bibles, letters of support, and more. We are often faced with the same question, “What am I going to do?” And, like Swanson, we feel inadequate, afraid, or ill-equipped. Readers will see how small faithful choices can lead to larger ones—and in so doing, change the world for generations to come. Everyone—young and old—should be acquainted with this amazing story of faith, courage, and compassion.

Dream-child

Dream-child
An in-depth look into the life of Romantic essayist Charles Lamb and the legacy of his work "[An] electrifying portrait of Charles Lamb."--New Yorker A pioneer of urban Romanticism, essayist Charles Lamb (1775-1834) found inspiration in London''s markets, theaters, prostitutes, and bookshops. He prized the city''s literary scene, too, where he was a star wit. He counted among his admirers Mary Shelley, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His friends valued in his conversation what distinguished his writing style: a highly original blend of irony, whimsy, and melancholy. Eric G. Wilson captures Lamb''s strange charm in this meticulously researched and engagingly written biography. He demonstrates how Lamb''s humor helped him cope with a life-defining tragedy: in a fit of madness, his sister Mary murdered their mother. Arranging to care for her himself, Lamb saved her from the gallows. Delightful when sane, Mary became Charles''s muse, and she collaborated with him on children''s books. In exploring Mary''s presence in Charles''s darkly comical essays, Wilson also shows how Lamb reverberates in today''s experimental literature.

From Chains to Change

From Chains to Change
At twelve years old, his hatred of God took root. Weighed by chains of guilt and shame, Steven Young grew to live for the moment. He partied, slept around, gambled, and manipulated people for his own desires. His choices led to four failed marriages and eight years in prison. Broke and alone, he lived five years homeless on the streets of Nashville, Tennessee, and in 2013 decided to end it all. At his lowest point, the very God he despised stepped in. It would still be a long healing journey From Chains to Change. This painfully honest and powerfully redemptive story is an example of God''s ability to transform the past, restore hearts, and offer hope for the future.

Cultural Cycles

release date: Sep 19, 2017
Cultural Cycles
Time may be linear, but history is circular. We see patterns throughout history-periods of prosperity and growth followed inevitably by disastrous upheaval that changes everything. Through an intriguing mixture of historical acumen and big-data analytics, these events can be studied and predicted. In Cultural Cycles, business forecaster J. Eric Wilson applies his knowledge of predictive analytics to the history of human cultures, to help illuminate the past, explain the present, and provide a bold picture of tomorrow. Wilson demonstrates a predictable cycle of historic extremes from periods of abundance and growth to cultural crises, or "resets," marked by disastrous social and political upheaval. At its worst, a reset can destroy a culture-and any nations strong enough to survive such events are forever changed. Closely examining the historical cycles of the United States from the seventeenth century to the present, Wilson argues that the nation is poised for its next cataclysmic reset. The nation''s future lies in the balance-and Wilson''s recommendations can help us prepare. A fascinating, easily understood exploration of history and analytics, Cultural Cycles uses practical reasoning and intuitive insight to reveal what many sense-the next great turn of the wheel of history.

Planet Hopp from Trappist-1e Composition Notebook

release date: Apr 29, 2017
Planet Hopp from Trappist-1e Composition Notebook
TRAPPIST-1 is a planetary system, located 12 parsecs away from the Solar system (39 light years), near the ecliptic, within the constellation of Aquarius. Around a star which is 12 times less massive than the Sun and only slightly larger than Jupiter, there are at least seven planets in orbit. The initial discovery was made by TRAPPIST, the TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope. Additional planets were subsequently identified using TRAPPIST and the Spitzer space telescope, the Very Large Telescope, UKIRT, the Liverpool Telescope and the William Herschel Telescope. All the planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system transit their star, meaning that they pass in front of it. The planets were discovered from the regular and repeated shadows that are cast during transit. Thanks to the transit signals we could measure the orbital periods of the planets and could calculate the sizes of the planets. The exact time at which the planets transit also provide us with a means to measure their masses, which leads to knowing their densities and therefore their bulk properties. The planets are consistent with a rocky composition. We found that the planets have sizes and masses comparable to the Earth and Venus. Because we know the distance of the planets to their star, and the temperature of the star, we can deduce that they receive an amount of light that is similar to many of the planets in the Solar system, from Mercury to beyond Mars. During transit, some of the starlight goes through the atmosphere of the planets, getting transformed by the chemical composition of the atmosphere and by its vertical structure. This means that we can remotely study the climates of terrestrial worlds beyond our Solar system! The TRAPPIST-1 worlds are the most optimal currently at our disposal. They are providing humanity with it first opportunities at discovering evidence of biology beyond the Solar system.

The Republic of Cthulhu

release date: Jan 01, 2016
The Republic of Cthulhu
If parapolitics, a branch of radical criminology that studies the interactions between public entities and clandestine agencies, is to develop as an academic discipline, then it must develop a coherent theory of aesthetics in order to successfully perform its primary function: to render perceptible extra-judicial phenomena that have hitherto resisted formal classification. Wilson offers the work of H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) as an example of the relevance of subversive literature-in this case, cosmic horror and the weird tale-to the parapolitical criminologist. Cosmic horror is a form of writing that relies heavily upon the epistemological assumption of a radical and irreconcilable disjunction between appearance and reality, perception and truth. In many ways, the well-constructed weird tale strongly resembles the hard-boiled detective story or the noir thriller in that the resolution of the narrative hinges upon a dramatically shattering confrontation with an unspeakable reality. Apart from its obvious utilization of conspiracy theory, the primary attraction of the Lovecraftian text lies with its remarkably sophisticated utilization of two central tropes of classical aesthetic theory-the sublime and the grotesque. Not only does Lovecraft''s oeuvre represent a remarkable use of both of these motifs, but the raw literary power of the Lovecraftian weird tale serves as an outstanding exemplar for the parapolitical scholar to emulate in formulating an alternative mode of discourse, or poetics.
