Biblical Leadership

release date: Oct 14, 2024
Biblical Leadership
Using the fact that three of the the world''s major religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity) are based on a 3000-year-old source, namely the five books of Moses (i.e., the "Torah"), this book explores this ancient text for principles of leadership. Based on the fact that the Torah culminates in being the story of the first generation of Jews and the principle that a generation''s leader is like the generation itself, this work focuses on Moses as the archetypical leader. Throughout the pages, this work will delve into what leadership princples can be gleaned from the narrative, taking into account the nuances of the original text as well as commentary of both ancient and modern-day sages. The conclusion is a listing of the key attributes of a leader and how one acquire these attributes.

EDITIO PRINCEPS.

release date: Jan 01, 2017
EDITIO PRINCEPS.
The Gutenberg Bible is widely recognized as Europe''s first printed book, a book that forever changed the world. However, despite its initial impact, fame was fleeting: for the better part of three centuries the Bible was virtually forgotten; only after two centuries of tenacious and contentious scholarship did it attain its iconic status as a monument of human invention. Editio princeps: A History of the Gutenberg Bible is the first book to tell the whole story of Europe''s first printed edition, describing its creation at Mainz circa 1455, its impact on fifteenth-century life and religion, its fall into oblivion during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and its rediscovery and rise to worldwide fame during the centuries thereafter. This comprehensive study examines the forty-nine surviving Gutenberg Bibles, and fragments of at least fourteen others, in the chronological order in which they came to light. Combining close analysis of material clues within the Bibles themselves with fresh documentary discoveries, the book reconstructs the history of each copy in unprecedented depth, from its earliest known context through every change of ownership up to the present day. Along the way it introduces the colorful cast of proud possessors, crafty booksellers, observant travelers, and scholarly librarians who shaped our understanding of Europe''s first printed book. Bringing the ''biographies'' of all the Gutenberg Bibles together for the first time, this richly illustrated study contextualizes both the historic cultural impact of the editio princeps and its transformation into a world treasure.

The Mrs. Potts' Sad Iron Collector's Guide

release date: Mar 01, 2014
The Mrs. Potts' Sad Iron Collector's Guide
A tribute to Mrs. Potts for her invention of the Cold Handle Sad Iron that changed the clothing iron industry. Her invention was so popular that multiple clothing iron producers soon produced their own line(s) of her irons. This book will exhibit the multiple Mrs. Potts'' sad iron that exist. Mrs. Mary Florence Potts of Ottumwa, Iowa, (1850/51-1922) received two patents for her "Cold Handle Sad Iron." Her first patent: May 24, 1870, "Doubled Pointed Iron." Her second patent: April 4, 1871, "Cold Handle." Her patents revolutionized clothing iron production in America.

Adaptation to Simultaneous Multi-dimensional Distortions

Adaptation to Simultaneous Multi-dimensional Distortions
The concept of the perception-action cycle (the idea that perceptual information guides behavior and that behavior updates perceptual information) is at the heart of much of the research inspired by James Gibson''s Ecological approach to psychology. Inherent in this idea is that the information obtained by the perceptual systems can be used to guide subsequent actions, particularly in a manner that allows for the completion or reaching of some future state or goal -- this has been termed prospective control. What happens when the perceptual information obtained does not support action (or actions that the organism is familiar with)? In a series of studies, I have examined the consequences of disrupting the perception-action cycle on participants'' ability successfully regulate their behavior. Participants were instructed to navigate through a virtual maze (2 dimensional) by moving a virtual pointer controlled by their head motion. I manipulated the relation between their motion and the resultant optical movement in the display (single axis inversion, dual axis inversion, complex dual axis inversion) as well as how much visual structure they were provided. Overall, results indicated that as participants adapted, their motion became more efficient (decrease in time to completion) and more goal directed (prospective, indicated by increases in Hurst exponent). The complex distortion condition elicited a significant amount of motion sickness (46%). I found that participants who became sick did not show an increase in efficiency (increased time to completion) and exhibited more exploratory motion than those who remained well (lower Hurst exponent values). The ability to anticipate or predict the relation between perceptual information and action is necessary for adaptation to occur -- when this ability is not supported performance and physiologic deficits are likely.

Aging and Sexual Offending

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Aging and Sexual Offending
This thesis examined the effect of age on sexually offensive behaviour. Research has noted both an increase in the average age of incarcerated offenders and that a higher percentage of older offenders are incarcerated for sexual offences than are younger offenders. Older sexual offenders were initially compared with younger offenders on offender and offence characteristics and these analyses revealed that older sexual offenders had a higher incidence of male victims, a younger victim age, and more intra-familial victims. Phallometric assessments of all sexual offenders were then examined to see whether sexual deviance may account for the differences found between older and younger sexual offenders in victim age and gender. These analyses revealed that the oldest and youngest offenders were more deviant than middle-aged sexual offenders and that the sexual interests of older offenders were more commonly for females. Finally, all subjects were classified as either Historical (offending had ceased, without judicial intervention, at least 7 years prior to incarceration), First-time (incarcerated for a recent sexual offence and no history of sexual offending), or Recidivist sexual offenders (currently incarcerated for a sexual offence and have at least one prior sentencing date for any sexual offence): age accounted for 12% of the variance in categorisation. Fifty-five percent of the sexual offenders age 60 years or more were found to have committed and ceased their offending at least seven years prior to incarceration (i.e., were Historical offenders). The percentage of Recidivist offenders remained relatively consistent across age groups at about 20%. No difference was found in phallometrically assessed sexual deviance between the groups of older offenders.

Prospective Control

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Prospective Control
Prospective control can be characterized as the ability to anticipate future events and act in an anticipatory manner to arrive at a desired goal. If this process is disturbed, one must actively explore the environment to properly detect new mappings. Virtual environments are able to circumvent the limitations of the physical environment and therefore can aid in determining the boundaries of people''s ability to engage in prospective control. However, it has not been shown that the behaviors exhibited in these contexts are generalizable. Participants'' head motion was recorded while they navigated through a physical or virtual maze. The results indicated main effects of time and segment as well as a time x segment interaction for both yaw and pitch rotations. There was no significant difference between the physical and virtual conditions nor were there any significant interactions involving condition. These changes reflect how behavior is modified to regain prospectivity.

Children's Letters to God

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Children's Letters to God
Inspired by the international bestseller of the same name, Children''s Letters To God is a musical that follows the lives of five young friends as they voice beliefs, desires, questions and doubts common to all people but most disarmingly expressed by children. Sixteen tuneful songs and assorted scenes (some based on actual letters) explore timeless issues such as sibling rivalry, divorce, holidays, loss of a beloved pet, the trials of being unathletic and first love. This entertaining show carries a universal message which crosses the boundaries of age, geography, and religion. As in the best-selling book, the musical is not specifically religious in nature. It''s about kids and various events in their lives that lead them to ask a lot of questions -- some funny, some serious, some surprising.

Gestion de l'exploitation agricole

release date: Jan 01, 1997
