Lady Molly of Scotland Yard

release date: Aug 01, 2022
Lady Molly of Scotland Yard
In ''Lady Molly of Scotland Yard'', Baroness Emmuska Orczy offers readers an intriguing collection of detective stories featuring the astute Lady Molly, an early forerunner of the female detective genre. This insightful compendium not only delights with its plots full of twists and intellectual puzzles but also imports a unique sense of literary finesse, exploring the challenges and societal nuances faced by women during the Edwardian era. The style, suffused with an eloquent and now nostalgic articulation of early 20th century English, situates itself amidst a pivotal moment in literature, where the detective story evolved from mere entertainment to a more complex and profound narrative form, reflecting societal perceptions and philosophies. Orczy''s writing thus echoes the innovation of her contemporaries while trailblazing for future women in literature and law enforcement narratives. Baroness Emmuska Orczy, herself an aristocrat of Hungarian descent, was most famously known for her novel, ''The Scarlet Pimpernel''. She was a keen observer of the societal structures and notions of nobility and gender roles of her time, which considerably influenced her writing. Her personal narrative, that of an immigrant who had migrated to London, manifests in her strong-willed characters who often defy conventions and societal expectations, like Lady Molly, who embodies Orczy''s own experience with unconventional courage and astuteness. The groundwork for such a character could have been inspired by Orczy''s own need to traverse and challenge the dynamics of a society that was rigid and often unkind to outsiders and women, thus imbuing her character with authenticity and depth. ''Lady Molly of Scotland Yard'' is highly recommended for those with a penchant for classic detective fiction and readers interested in proto-feminist literary works. The book provides not only an engaging puzzle to unravel but also a textual representation of a progressive female protagonist intricately woven against a backdrop of Edwardian society. Orczy''s work resonates still, offering a blend of historical perspective and timeless intrigue that will captivate the modern reader while contributing to the discourse on gender and genre in literary traditions.

The Scarlet Pimpernel (Annotated)
In the late 18th century, France was in the throes of the French Revolution. Of particular tumult during this conflict were the years known as the "Reign of Terror", a time in which a revolutionary tribunal executed thousands of French citizens. It is during the "Reign of Terror" in which Baroness Emmuska Orczy''s "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is set. "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is the story of Sir Percy Blakeney, a chivalrous Englishman married to the beautiful French actress, Marguerite St. Just, with whom he pretends to be a slow-witted dandy. However this is but a ruse to hide his true identity as the Scarlet Pimpernel, who with his "League of the Scarlet Pimpernel", a secret society of English aristocrats, rescue French royalists before they can be marched atop the guillotine. Drawing his nickname from the small red flower he draws on his messages, the Scarlet Pimpernel is chased the relentless French agent Citizen Armand Chauvelin as he tries to intervene in the madness of the "Reign of Terror". First published in 1905, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is notable for its introduction to literature of a hero with a secret identity. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

The Scarlet Pimpernel - Classic Book
The Scarlet Pimpernel is the first novel in a series of historical fiction by Baroness Orczy set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution, first published in 1905. The novel was written after Orczy''s stage play of the same title enjoyed a long run in London and popular success earlier in 1905, after a first run in Nottingham in 1903. The Scarlet Pimpernel is the name of a chivalrous Englishman, Sir Percy Blakeney, in the time of the Terrors in France, who, with his band of gentlemen, rescues aristocrats before they can be killed by the violent government in revolutionary France. A wealthy English fop, he is known by his symbol, a simple flower, the scarlet pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis). He succeeds by transforming himself into a formidable swordsman and a quick-thinking escape artist in addition to the strict secrecy of the group''s movements. His identity is secret to all but his men. Marguerite Blakeney, French wife of the wealthy English dandy, is approached by the new French envoy to England with a threat to her brother''s life if she does not aid in his search for the Pimpernel. She aids him, and then discovers that the Pimpernel is also very dear to her. She sails to France to stop the envoy. Opening at the New Theatre in London''s West End on January 5, 1905, the play became a favourite of British audiences, eventually playing more than 2000 performances and becoming one of the most popular shows staged in Britain. Leatherface (Large Print)
PROLOGUEMONS: SEPTEMBER, 1572It lacked two hours before the dawn on this sultry night early in September. The crescent moon had long ago sunk behind a bank of clouds in the west, and not a sound stirred the low-lying land around the besieged city.To the south the bivouac fires of Alva''s camp had died out one by one, and here the measured tread of the sentinels on their beat alone broke the silence of the night. To the north, where valorous Orange with a handful of men--undisciplined, unpaid and rebellious--vainly tried to provoke his powerful foe into a pitched battle, relying on God for the result, there was greater silence still. The sentinels--wearied and indifferent--had dropped to sleep at their post: the troops, already mutinous, only held to their duty by the powerful personality of the Prince, slept as soundly as total indifference to the cause for which they were paid to fight could possibly allow.

The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel

release date: Jul 01, 2008
The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel
Citizen Chauvelin, of the Committee of Public Safety, presents citizen Fouquier-Tinville, the Public Prosecutor, with the most extraordinary claim: The dangerous English spy known to the world as the Scarlet Pimpernel, he says, is now safely under lock and key. He must be transferred to the Abbaye prison forthwith -- and to the guillotine as quickly as might be. No one is to take any risks this time. There must be no question either of discrediting his famous League, or of obtaining other more valuable information out of him. Such methods have proved disastrous There are no safe Englishmen these days, except the dead ones -- and it will not take citizen Fouquier-Tinville much thought or time to frame an indictment against the notorious Scarlet Pimpernel . . . and that will do away with the necessity of a prolonged trial. The revolutionary government is at war with England now, and short work can be made of all poisonous spies English novelist and playwright Baroness Emmuska Orczy (1865-1947) achieved enduring success with her novels of politics and intrigue set during the time of the French Revolution.
