Impacts of Intersection Treatments and Traffic Characteristics on Bicyclist Safety

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Impacts of Intersection Treatments and Traffic Characteristics on Bicyclist Safety
This study assessed the safety impact and performance of three different bicycle-specific intersection treatments (bike boxes, mixing zones, and bicycle signals) using surrogate safety measures (i.e., bicycle-vehicle conflicts and other non-crash measures). To date, limited research had been conducted to analyze how these treatments along with traffic characteristics (e.g., bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle volumes) impact the frequency and severity bicycle-vehicle conflicts, and research was needed to provide practitioners guidance on when and where to install these treatments. To develop this guidance, this project analyzed data collected from three sources: data reduced from videos at 12 field study sites, microsimulation modeling, and a bicycling simulator experiment. Through estimation of Poisson regression models and other statistical analyses of these data, guidance was developed which provides practitioners information on when and where to consider installation of these treatments based on bicycle, vehicle, and pedestrian volumes, road user speeds, and other bicyclist behavioral characteristics.

An Artist and the Light: O My Happy Soul

release date: Feb 11, 2021
An Artist and the Light: O My Happy Soul
"Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted." Martin Luther King An Artist and the Light is a heartwarming and profoundly lyrical memoir-a golden travelogue-that paints a colorful picture of a traveling muralist who dares to create a life not dictated by societal standards. Through bright optimism, Eleanor Yates cherishes the compassion and protection people show her in every country and village she visits. She delights in magical blessings and finds greater meaning as she learns to consider each challenge as a rich possibility, ultimately harvesting a bright wisdom from characters and circumstances met far and wide. In her own words, "This book has been painted with magic. My greatest intention is to embolden joy and love. I want you to feel transported, to float free as a bird, to feel your own creative imagination dance with new ideas, and shine with bright, vivid euphoria wherever you go."

Beyond the Tulips. a Brief History of the Dutch

release date: Mar 21, 2019
Beyond the Tulips. a Brief History of the Dutch
Beyond the Tulips is a popular history, a journalistic tale of an extraordinary nation of people drawn from a personal perspective, following the four themes of water, land, industry, and people. The reader is guided beyond the tulips, bikes and dikes on a memorable, meandering journey into the multi-layered fabric of Dutch society, via innumerable historical panoramas. The Blue Thread follows the industry and culture of the global gateway of Rotterdam, the Dutch pioneers and profiteers who plied the seven seas, the innovative engineers who tame the waters of seas, rivers and canals at home and around the world. The Dutch population benefit from the extensive canal and river networks for trade and leisure. The Green Thread explores the land resources of the Netherlands, by visiting the city and the province of Groningen, and the Dutch farmers and millers, bakers and brewers, market gardeners, horti- and flori-culturalists who shape the land and feed the nation. The nation''s energy resources and ecology are examined. The Gold Thread introduces us to the serendipitous city of Amsterdam, the birthplace of twins: capitalism and liberalism. We see the Dutch as a trading nation, specialised in the services of buying and selling, production and transportation of goods around Europe and across the world. Small and large enterprises ride the ebb and flow of prosperity. Family manufacturing businesses morph into multinationals with Dutchmen at the helm. The bicycle is underwriting the health and hence the wealth of the nation. The Orange Thread visits the courtly capital of The Hague and reviews the Dutch political structure, and the scientific, technical and cultural achievements. Ministers of state and ministers of religion, painters and poets, republicans and royalists, scientists and engineers, entrepreneurs & athletes all colour this ever-evolving nation of the Netherlands. Elizabeth Yates-Koning is an Anglo-Dutch author living and working in London and Amsterdam, a graduate in Economics, Sociology and Dutch.

Prudence Crandall a Woman of Courage

release date: Sep 21, 2016
Prudence Crandall a Woman of Courage
The story of the young Prudence Crandall''s stout-hearted resistance to danger and violence inspirits us in the same way. There really was a patriotic Prudence Crandall who fought bravely against heavy odds for what we now love as one of the bases of our American heritage. She is no imaginary heroine. She was a slender young woman, with bright blue eyes, soft blond hair, and a special way of speaking, quiet, controlled -, "lady-like," as people said in the early part of the 1800''s, - but firm as granite. The author of this book has searched letters, memoirs, documents of all kinds, and has found out so much about her, that we can actually see her as she stood, brave as a lion, in her decorous, long, spreading skirts, her well-brushed golden hair gleaming, her bonnet-strings tied neatly under her firm chin.
