For the Promise of Tomorrow

release date: May 23, 2024
For the Promise of Tomorrow
in Brussels 2034 Cyrile Standaert, a middle-aged engineer, loses his partner following a hit and run car accident. Thereafter his life and mental health begin to unravel, and his two teenage children in turn begin to slide into truancy and drugs. It is at this point that he is visited by his future self, who has been drafted into a time travel pilot programme run by scientist Sofie Debroux. Future Cyrile offers Present Cyrile the chance to go back to 2008 and change his future. In return for this, he is tasked with helping Sofie''s grandfather, former physics lecturer Herman Debroux, to escape a fate of homelessness and alcoholism. Having returned to 2008 Cyrile meets a young Herman and his wife, Nina Debroux, just as they are beginning their married life. The couple take Cyrile into their house as a lodger, and the trio then attempt to set up young Past Cyril of 2008 with a teenage Genevieve Wilkes. They find themselves confronted with the tribal politics of the time, separationist tensions, personal suspicions and cohabitation frictions, not to mention a few time-travel paradoxes along the way. In terms of its inspiration, many aspects of it are based on my own experiences living, working and growing up in Brussels and the Flemish belt around it, along with the differences in culture between myself (a half-Scot, half-Cypriot who is Belgian by proxy) and the local communities. The book is also inspired by a few personal hypotheses about how the coronavirus pandemic will affect our lives, change our habits and shape our views in the future, based on the ways it has done so already.

How to Analyze People Guide

release date: Aug 30, 2022
How to Analyze People Guide
It''s important to remember that by understanding these concepts you''re better equipped to identify and defend against them, and your new knowledge shouldn''t be about how you can use those same tactics to manipulate other people. There is a difference between evil manipulation and trying to convince someone of something else. You don''t want to trick someone into doing things for you when they won''t get any benefit at all. You only want to use these tactics when you need to persuade someone for something and you can''t blatantly ask them for help. There are people that are harder to convince than others, so you might need to use some strategies of persuasion. Who might you need to persuade? You never want to take advantage of someone that already doesn''t have much to give. Those you should be trying to persuade are people that hold power. You might want to learn how to convince your boss to get a raise. Maybe you want to try to get your girlfriend to move in with you. Perhaps you have to ask your parents for a loan. You don''t want to "punch down," but instead, "reach up."

Challenges in the Classroom

release date: Oct 15, 2021
Challenges in the Classroom
I name this book Challenges in the Classroom. There are many challenges teachers and scholars face in the classroom room. Many teachers get so frustrated to the point of wanting to leave that profession. This novel is a helpful tool for all teachers, especially for new teachers, grades K-12. It offers many ideas or things to do to help you plan better and strategize when planning and preparing lessons. It tells you about the difficulties that teachers sometimes face in the classroom. The Strategies you use, will minimize the challenges or struggles you may face in the classroom. Teachers usually feel challenged and stressed because of a lack of support. Pupils are misplaced in an incorrect classroom. Because of overcrowdedness, scholars become overwhelmed, unattentive, and sometimes conflicts arise. Teachers are also overwhelmed because of the lack of focusing during a lesson. Many times, they have to stop their lesson, which causes frustration and discouragement. Although there are many challenges, there are also rewards. Some students have made great progress and become successful, and many of the young scholars have become productive citizens in society.

Taking Her at Her Work: Reconsidering the Legacy of Alma Mahler

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Taking Her at Her Work: Reconsidering the Legacy of Alma Mahler
Alma Mahler (18791964) grew up surrounded by artists in late nineteenth-century Vienna. Despite her musical training, demonstrated passion for music, and publication of several Lieder, Mahlers identity as a composer has remained overshadowed by narratives surrounding her personal life and those of her husbands and lovers, not to mention the artistic work of her husbands and lovers. Increasingly, however, interest in Alma Mahler as a composer has been nurtured through creative engagement with that legacy, and frequently by women authors and artists. This dissertation explores the existing literature written by and related to Alma Mahler and identifies some approaches for reevaluating her legacy as a composer. Those writing about the life and legacy of Alma Mahler in the twenty-first century typically follow one of two established paths; that of the rational author writing the irrational female subject or that of creative, and frequently feminist, approaches to Mahlers life and work. I propose a third path, one that acknowledges both of the aforementioned approaches, but that focuses on Mahlers work instead of her words. By drawing attention to Mahler worksthat is, her songs and the performance thereofand considering how reception and recording of these songs has shifted over the past several decades, I am poised to assert that Mahler is a composer. The proliferation of diverging primary source materials surrounding her life and musical activities has prompted some to discount the narrative of Alma Mahler as a legitimate composer. This dissertation acknowledges the varied and often conflicting approaches to and perspectives on the idea of Alma Mahler as a composer and investigates how her music and its performance have been received in light of, and sometimes despite, her own writings. My work reconciles diverse facets of the composer by exploring her own words, the words of others, and, perhaps most importantly, her musical work in contemporary performance. It is my contention that by investigating Mahler through all of these frames, we can identify and contextualize the hidden but significant musical contributions of a young, female song composer in turn-of-the-century Vienna..

Forms of Engagement

release date: Jun 13, 2013
Forms of Engagement
What does it mean for a woman to write an elegy, ode, epic, or blazon in the seventeenth century? How does their reading affect women''s use of particular poetic forms and what can the physical appearance of a poem, in print and manuscript, reveal about how that poem in turn was read? Forms of Engagement shows how the aesthetic qualities of early modern women''s poetry emerge from the culture in which they write. It reveals previously unrecognized patterns of influence between women poets Katherine Philips, Lucy Hutchinson, and Margaret Cavendish and their peers and predecessors: how Lucy Hutchinson responded to Ben Jonson and John Milton, how Margaret Cavendish responded to Thomas Hobbes and the scientists of the early Royal Society, and how Katherine Philips re-worked Donne''s lyrics and may herself have influenced Abraham Cowley and Andrew Marvell. This book places analysis of form at the centre of an historical study of women writers, arguing that reading for form is reading for influence. Hutchinson, Philips, and Cavendish were immersed in mid-seventeenth century cultural developments, from the birth of experimental philosophy, to the local and state politics of civil war and the rapid expansion of women''s print publication. For women poets, reworking poetic forms such as elegy, ode, epic, and couplet was a fundamental engagement with the culture in which they wrote. By focusing on these interactions, rather than statements of exclusion and rejection, a formalist reading of these women can actually provide a more nuanced historical view of their participation in literary culture.

Lies

release date: May 01, 2013
Lies
We lie to ourselves every day, and these lies can lead to significant unhappiness in our lives. In Lies, authors Bridget Harwell and Elizabeth Scott present a collection of more than forty essays based on their daily interactions with clients who have suffered the pain of digging deeply and unearthing the self-deceptions that have limited their lives. Harwell and Scott, two successful, practicing psychologists, compiled the essays to examine the various forms of self-deception, many of which are unconscious attempts at self-protection which can go unnoticed and yet lead to stress and unhappiness. Accompanied by whimsical and evocative drawings, Lies examines a variety of themes, such as guilt, worry, indecision, and the power of relationships. Each piece is followed by a conversation between Harwell and Scott that seeks to add clarity to the discussion. Written in a conversational style that mimics a therapy session, this collection presents strategies for finding the truth beneath the lies we tell ourselves and gives us an opportunity to live a more integrated life, a life of authenticity that''s essential for any kind of true happiness.
