Standardized tests have been used to assess student progress in schools throughout the United States for decades. Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, student score reports must be provided to the parents and teachers of an estimated 22 million school children each year. However, little research has examined how parents and teachers understand or use the information provided on student score reports. The current study began the process of determining the utility of such reports. The primary objectives for the study were to determine if parents and teachers accurately interpreted standardized test scores for individual students, to what extent they used this information to make decisions regarding the student''s education, and if the type of score provided and graphical format used to display the score influenced their interpretations. A secondary objective of the study was to integrate three methodological approaches that strive to address real-world issues. The study used a 2 x 2 quasi-experimental survey design in which parents and teachers examined four different student score reports displaying norm-referenced versus criterion referenced scores and using simple bar charts versus confidence interval bands to display the scores. Respondents answered questions about each report to measure score interpretation accuracy as well as potential use of the information. Sixty-five of the 180 parent surveys distributed were returned while 52 of the over 200 teacher surveys were returned. Analysis of variance procedures found significant differences in interpretation accuracy and score use among the four score report designs. Criterion-referenced proficiency scores were more accurately interpreted than the norm-referenced national percentile rank scores. The confidence interval band graphs did not appear to aid in the understanding or score reliability. Results indicated that overall ability to understand the score reports was low and that the type of scores reported and the way the scores are displayed influence the accuracy of parent and teacher interpretations and use of the test results.
