Pamela Colman Smith

release date: Jul 06, 2021
Pamela Colman Smith
Pamela Colman Smith’s illustrations for the Rider Waite tarot deck are known to millions worldwide, but her work took her from art galleries in New York and Europe to salons with luminaries of the English suffrage movement, the Irish literary revival, and friendships with Bram Stoker, W. B. Yeats, and G. K. Chesterton. A feminist artist, poet, folklorist, editor, publisher, and stage designer who was active from 1896 through the 1920s, Colman Smith became popular for her live performances of Jamaican folktales in both England and the U.S., using the creole of the island to capture the dramatic power of these tales while driving speculation about her purposefully indeterminate racial and sexual identity. She also travelled in - and was expelled from – occult circles, and her ability to take on and cast aside a wide range of identities was central to her life’s work. Colman Smith illustrated more than 20 books and well over a hundred magazine articles, wrote two collections of Jamaican folktales, and edited two magazines. Her paintings were exhibited in galleries in the U.S. and Europe.

Epidemiology and Health Care Utilization Associated with Chronic Pain in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Epidemiology and Health Care Utilization Associated with Chronic Pain in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Background: Chronic pain exerts a tremendous burden on individuals, families, and society, and has a high estimated prevalence (up to 54% globally and 44% in Canada) and direct health care cost ($7.2 billion in Canada in 2014). Most Canadian epidemiological and cost estimates do not include Newfoundland and Labrador; a knowledge gap potentially filled using health administrative data. Aim: To extract information about chronic pain as a single chronic disease in Newfoundland and Labrador using health administrative data. Methods: Health administrative data algorithms that identify cases of chronic pain as a single chronic disease were derived from the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Care Plan Fee-for-Service Physician Claims File and Provincial Discharge Abstract Data of known chronic pain populations, and validated against an audit of the electronic medical records data of a primary care population sample. The most performant algorithm was used to identify chronic pain cases from fee-for-service physician claims data in Newfoundland and Labrador, which allowed estimation of both chronic pain incidence/prevalence, and chronic pain association with comorbidity presence and annual health care utilization. Results: The most performant validated algorithm to ascertain chronic pain cases from Newfoundland and Labrador administrative data had 70.3% sensitivity, 66.8% specificity, and 40.3% positive predictive value. As defined by the algorithm, the 2009/10 age-standardized Newfoundland and Labrador chronic pain prevalence was estimated at 37,469 per 100,000 population and incidence rate was estimated at 4,585 per 100,000 person-years at risk. Estimates were higher in females, residents of urban areas, and with increasing age. Residents identified as chronic pain cases had two to four times the odds of having a chronic comorbidity and up to twice the rate of publicly funded health care utilization compared to residents not identified as chronic pain cases. Conclusions: A health administrative data algorithm was derived and validated to identify chronic pain cases and estimate disease burden in residents attending fee-for-service physician encounters in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Chronic Pain Algorithm identified almost four out of ten Newfoundland and Labrador residents and they had a higher prevalence of comorbidities and utilization of publicly funded health services.

Here are Cleopatra’s thoughts on sibling rivalry, Mae West on positive body image, Frida Kahlo on finding your style, Catherine the Great on dealing with gossip, Agatha Christie on getting dumped, Hedy Lamarr on being underestimated—to list only a few—as well as others who address dilemmas including career-planning, female friendship, loneliness, financial management, and political engagement. Perceived Interpersonal Climate and Interpersonal Complementarity

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Perceived Interpersonal Climate and Interpersonal Complementarity
"Few studies of interpersonal complementarity have examined individual differences that might moderate the relation between one person''s behaviour and the other''s response. The present research investigated the degree to which global perceptions of others (perceived interpersonal climates) moderated the relation between event-level perceptions of the other and behavioural response in social interactions. The influence of interpersonal perceptions on social behaviour was examined in two field studies; the first study was conducted with university undergraduates, and the second study was conducted with a community sample of working adults. Event-contingent recording procedures were used to collect information about participants'' communal (agreeable---quarrelsome) and agentic (dominant---submissive) behaviours and perceptions of partner communion and partner agency. Based on hypotheses derived from interpersonal complementarity, it was expected that perceptions of communion would predict communal behaviour according to the principle of correspondence (agreeableness evokes agreeableness and hostility evokes hostility) and perceptions of agency would predict agentic behaviour according to the principle of reciprocity (dominance invites submissiveness and submissiveness invites dominance). As predicted, perceived interpersonal climates moderated the relation between perception of the other and behaviour in specific interactions. Perceived communion in an event predicted correspondence with regard to communal behaviour; this response was stronger for individuals who generally perceived others as cold-quarrelsome rather than warm-agreeable. Perceived agency in an event predicted reciprocity such that individuals responded to perceptions of dominance with more submissive behaviour and perceptions of submissiveness with more dominant behaviour; this response was stronger for individuals who generally perceived others as submissive, and this response was weak to non-existent for individuals who generally perceived others as dominant. The moderating effects of perceived interpersonal climates were independent of five-factor and interpersonal traits; global perceptions of others provided unique interpersonal information not captured by the five-factor model of personality. Both studies support the basic principles of complementarity while indicating that complementarity does not apply equally to all people. The present research shows that interpersonal perceptions are not only useful for studying behaviour within an event, but that global perceptions of others (perceived interpersonal climates) influence our reactions to the social environment." --
