ECHOS

release date: Jan 01, 2013
ECHOS
"ECHOS: Early Childhood Hands-On Science" was developed at the Miami Science Museum as a comprehensive set of science lessons sequenced to lead children toward a deeper understanding of science content and the use of science process skills. The purpose of the research is to determine whether use of the "ECHOS" model will increase the amount and quality of science teaching and learning in preschool programs serving low-income children. "ECHOS" is based on the conviction that teachers of children at risk of school failure need to be both content sources and facilitators of learning who deliberately structure the environment and provide explicit instruction on basic science concepts. Analyses at the end of the first year show preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of "ECHOS" on the quality of teacher''s science instruction and on children''s science skills. These positive preliminary results from a first year of the randomized controlled trial, and relatively high rates of teacher fidelity, indicate that "ECHOS" has demonstrated its potential to impact teacher practice and student outcomes. Tables are appended.

Upper Limb Rehabilitation After Stroke Through Functional Task Focused Intervention

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Upper Limb Rehabilitation After Stroke Through Functional Task Focused Intervention
Stroke results in abnormal muscle synergies, weakness, and spasticity in the affected upper limb, which results in decreased performance of activities of daily living (ADL) and reliance on compensation strategies. Recent clinical reviews have shown the success of functionally motivated clinical intervention, and have shown that recovery of joint coordination is possible and may aid in recovery of real world use of the affected limb. Rehabilitation robots and other devices have become increasingly prevalent for administering arm rehabilitation therapy. The following research shows the benefits of technologies that assist with functional task focused therapy for stroke victims. The research on functional therapy technology was broken into three components. 1) A device, Hand Spring Operated Movement Enhancer (HandSOME), was developed to allow for functional training with real and virtual objects. This device was tested in a cross-sectional study with eight chronic stroke subjects, and significantly improved active range of motion (p

Building Communities Through Communication

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Building Communities Through Communication
This study uses narrative analysis to investigate public communication efforts of community development groups to provide a richer understanding of the indicators of group success or failure in this context. The subjects are participants of the Indiana HomeTown Competitiveness program, an initiative that seeks to develop local economic capacity to move rural communities beyond outdated economic models and generate more innovative, sustainable community development. Indiana HomeTown Competitiveness emphasizes four points: entrepreneurship, leadership, youth engagement, and local wealth or philanthropic giving. The impetus for this study is the pilot program''s need for a better understanding of the manner in which participating groups might generate engagement from external community members. To better understand the groups'' success or failure regarding public communication efforts, instances of seven pre-determined themes derived from narratives provided by group members are investigated. The themes, identified by existing research, include group relationships, group structure, group process, member attributes, external forces, group communication, and member emotions. This study uses a blend of quantitative and qualitative analysis to give broad perspective to successful identification of effective tactics which groups may use to engage community members in economic initiatives by means of public communication. Though the study is exploratory in nature, the findings indicate that group communication, relationships, and group structure are likely predictors of a group''s success or failure. The findings of this study also offer a reflection of actions that were successful and also actions that were not successful to program participants, and documents results for future program participants to use. The results also expand upon the available research regarding community development using communication theory. Using a narrative approach also identifies directions of further study to address the multiple discourses created by groups that give insight into community and group communication.

The Use of Modal Expression Preference as a Marker of Style and Attribution

release date: Jan 01, 2010
The Use of Modal Expression Preference as a Marker of Style and Attribution
Can an author''s preference for expressing modality be quantified and then used as a marker of attribution? This book explores the possibility of using the subjunctive mood as an indicator of style and a marker of authorship in Early Modern English texts. Using three works by the sixteenth-century biblical translator and polemicist, William Tyndale, Elizabeth Bell Canon establishes a predictable preference for certain types of modal expression. The theory of subjunctive use as a marker of attribution was then tested on the anonymous 1533 English translation of Erasmus'' Enchiridion Militis Christiani. Also included in this book is a modern English spelling version Tyndale''s The Parable of the Wicked Mammon.
