Sheepish

release date: May 23, 2025
Sheepish
Warm, witty, and full of Vineyard charm (plus an adorable lamb), Sheepish is a sea-breezy story of friendship, reinvention, and the messy, beautiful work of finding yourself-and love. "Bell has done it again with a delicious Martha's Vineyard love story ... it will transport you to the Island no matter where you are! Toss it in your beach bag and enjoy the escape" -- Julia Spiro, bestselling author of Such a Good Mom, Full, and Someone Else's Secret When tech-savvy Aly Bennett loses her job in San Francisco, she does what any self-respecting millennial in crisis would do-she hops a plane to Martha's Vineyard. Comforted by her childhood best friend, Aly trades Wi-Fi for ocean waves, laptops for lambs, and the hustle of city life for something slower, gentler, and unexpectedly real. As the Island works its magic, Aly crosses paths with Whit Dias, a local fisherman with a bruised and wary heart. The attraction is unexpected and undeniable. Aly begins to imagine a future that isn't driven by apps and ambition, until the tug of her old life-and the secrets she's kept hidden-threaten to undo everything. Join Aly, Whit, and an endearing cast of Vineyard characters in a heartwarming, sea-swept tale of friendship, forgiveness, and finding love where you least expect it. Praise for Sheepish: "A sun-kissed beach-read set on the magical island of Martha's Vineyard, where baby lambs frolic in the salty sea air and lovers seem destined to misunderstand each other." --Elizabeth Shick, author of The Golden Land, Winner of the AWP Prize for the Novel "Comical and tenderhearted, T. Elizabeth Bell's Sheepish is a charming portrait of two best friends, their summer on the Vineyard, and the surprising places they find love and purpose. You won't want to go home." --Brooke Lea Foster, bestselling author of All the Summers in Between "A clash of class. A summer romance. A second chance. Friends, family, lovers, and sheep careen and collide on the Vineyard in T. Elizabeth's Bell's delightfully sweet and sexy new novel." --Kate Feiffer, author of Morning Pages "The perfect literary rom-com, rich with Vineyard charm and unforgettable characters." --Elisa Speranza, author of The Italian Prisoner "A delightful romp in both the quiet off-season and the lively summer months, Sheepish will have you craving a steaming bowl of chowder, a hot lobster roll, and a scenic drive up-island while you cheer on Aly as she navigates the winding path of love-and finds herself in the process." --Emily Cavanagh, author of Her Guilty Secret "Set against the stunning backdrop of Martha's Vineyard, Sheepish is a lighthearted, beautifully drawn story of friendship, identity, and the quiet magic of starting over." --Dianne C. Braley, award-winning author of The Silence in the Sound and The Summer Before

Etruscan Mirrors

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Etruscan Mirrors
This fascicle of the Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum, which has been long in the making, is a collaborative effort between colleagues and friends: Evelyn Bell and Helen Nagy. Evelyn Bell contributed the catalogue entries on the mirrors in the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Frank V. de Bellis Collection at San Francisco State University. Helen Nagy was responsible for the catalogue entries on the mirrors at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the J. Paul Getty Museum; the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; the Art Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and the Seattle Art Museum. Analysis of the chemical composition of the mirrors is an invaluable tool to help scholars determine where the mirrors were manufactured and whether or not they are Etruscan, Roman, or even authentic works of art. Six of the mirrors in Berkeley were analyzed, while the remaining twelve were unfortunately either too fragile or corroded to allow for sampling. The mirrors in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Seattle Art Museum were tested, the one at San Francisco State University was not. Jesse Obert, a scholar and doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, has ably summarized the results of these analyses.

Revising Revision

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Revising Revision
We continuously change our belief systems by adding new beliefs and rejecting old ones. Since this is a constant occurrence, we need a theory that explains how to maintain our status as rational agents when we are required to revise our beliefs in the face of disconfirming evidence. The AGM model of belief revision--named after its originators Alchourrón, Gärdenfors and Makinson--provides us with a formal model of rational belief revision presented as a set of rationality postulates that must to be followed when an agent revises her beliefs. AGM uses entrenchment postulates which requires that an agent give up the less entrenched belief during a revision. However, I show that entrenchment based contraction in AGM allows for non-rational revisions. Since AGM is supposed to be a model of rational belief revision, I propose an amendment to AGM's entrenchment postulates that will guard against this.

Our Roots Run Deep as Ironweed

release date: Oct 30, 2013
Our Roots Run Deep as Ironweed
Motivated by a deeply rooted sense of place and community, Appalachian women have long fought against the damaging effects of industrialization. In this collection of interviews, sociologist Shannon Elizabeth Bell presents the voices of twelve Central Appalachian women, environmental justice activists fighting against mountaintop removal mining and its devastating effects on public health, regional ecology, and community well-being. Each woman narrates her own personal story of injustice and tells how that experience led her to activism. The interviews--many of them illustrated by the women's "photostories"--describe obstacles, losses, and tragedies. But they also tell of new communities and personal transformations catalyzed through activism. Bell supplements each narrative with careful notes that aid the reader while amplifying the power and flow of the activists' stories. Bell's analysis outlines the relationship between Appalachian women's activism and the gendered responsibilities they feel within their families and communities. Ultimately, Bell argues that these women draw upon a broader "protector identity" that both encompasses and extends the identity of motherhood that has often been associated with grassroots women's activism. As protectors, the women challenge dominant Appalachian gender expectations and guard not only their families but also their homeplaces, their communities, their heritage, and the endangered mountains that surround them. 30% of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to organizations fighting for environmental justice in Central Appalachia.
