Factors Affecting the Mobilization, Transport, and Bioavailability of Mercury in Reservoirs of the Upper Missouri River Basin

Factors Affecting the Mobilization, Transport, and Bioavailability of Mercury in Reservoirs of the Upper Missouri River Basin
Factors controlling the mobilization, transport, and bioavailability of mercury in relation to coal mining and other mercury sources were studied in reservoirs of the Upper Missouri River Basin. We assessed mercury and selenium contamination of fishes and sediments in 10 reservoirs, estimated mercury fluxes in Tongue River Reservoir, determined dietary accumulation of methylmercury by fish, and related limnological conditions in three reservoirs to rates of mercury accumulation by fish. Detailed limnological studies were conducted in Nelson, Cookson, and Tongue River reservoirs. Mercury concentrations were higher in walleyes (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) from headwater reservoirs with unregulated inflows than in fish of the same size from downstream reservoirs. Erosion and leaching during flooding apparently facilitated mercury accumulation by fish in reservoirs.

Like the Sun in Its Might
The Song of Deborah and Barak is a poetic depiction of the Kishon Battle, an Israelite military offensive against the forces of Northern Canaan. Featuring rare vocabulary and unique poetic elements, the song is preserved in the book of Judges after its narrative counterpart (4:1-24). The relative dating of the two accounts is debated, as is the song''s historical provenance and redactional history. However, in the last forty years, the diachronic inquiries that characterized Judges scholarship in the early twentieth century have been eclipsed by synchronic studies that demonstrate the selectivity and intentional arrangement of the book''s contents. Given the purposeful design of the overarching Judges narrative, an investigation of the function of the song in its literary context is warranted. To discern its narrative function, in this dissertation I will investigate the contribution of the Song of Deborah and Barak to the microplot (i.e., the Kishon Battle) and the macroplot (i.e., the book of Judges) in terms of plot development, characterization, and thematic emphases. Attributed to the prophet Deborah and Barak, the Israelite general, on the day of Israelite victory over Canaan, the song is not simply an imaginative duplicate of the prose-style battle report in Judges 4. Instead, the song consists of the pedagogically motivated reflections of a prophet, concerned to interpret recent events theologically for the battle-weary Israelite people. As a culminating moment in the Kishon Battle, the song heralds the righteous acts of YHWH, the Divine Warrior, who is able to overcome the strongest of opponents with the weakest of instruments. The song also evaluates Israel''s response to the muster, exposing the hesitancy of certain tribes as doubting YHWH''s saving power. Within the broader context of the book of Judges, the song underscores the celebratory tone of the first three narrative cycles, which highlight the mighty deeds of YHWH, and challenges the people to respond appropriately to their recent saving history. Israel''s utter failure to heed the prophet''s words in the subsequent cycles renders the song condemnatory; there, Israel''s faithful Sovereign gives them over to their own faithless impulses.

Failure Definition for Structural Reliability Assessment

Failure Definition for Structural Reliability Assessment
This study provides methodologies for defining failure for reliability-based, marine structural design and analysis. Structural reliability methods allow the prediction of an occurrence likelihood for a particular event of interest (for example, structural failure), allowing the designer to limit the probability of undesirable events. Changes to the traditional serviceability failure definitions are not possible without addressing the costs associated with the failures, either subjectively or objectively. A framework is provided by which this may be accomplished in the future. This study begins with a review and description of structural reliability methodologies as they have been applied to ship structure. Uncertainty types are then explored for information and tools used in a reliability prediction. Types of failure modes are described as reported in literature. These types are then expanded upon to establish classes of failure modes, leading to a methodology for formulating the range of failure definitions. Failure definition examples are provided for the hull girder and structural components at both the ultimate and serviceability types of failure. Finally, recommendations are made to provide guidance on applications and future research in this topic area.
