River of Being
Like a salmon leaving the ocean and swimming upriver, we are on a journey in which we must learn how to fly, at least for brief intervals. As we navigate the rapids in life, we grow stronger and more skillful. If we don''t make it up the waterfall though, we swim in circles where cynics stagnate. Joy and clarity are ahead if we continue to progress. While every person''s journey is unique, it is also universal. Any path that involves honesty and integrity leads to the same destination. How you get there doesn''t matter, although your experiences do make for an interesting story. What are the phases of the journey as we progress in consciousness? What do the transition points involve? Here is a map for the human experience. Maps offer clear distinctions for discussing where we''ve been, where we are, and where we''re going. Maps help us navigate common challenges and avoid potential traps. Are you approaching the Waterfall of Being? What does spiritual mastery involve? This book is a fish ladder for the spiritual journey.

A Taste for Life

A Taste for Life
This novel follows the lives of three women through the decades from the twenties to the turn of the century and explores the changes that have occurred in both the expectations and experiences of women during these decades. There is Alice, a fun-loving flapper of the twenties, who marries Robert during the Depression years. She faces the difficulties of feeding and clothing her growing family during the years of war and resultant rationing but basically is happy in her life''s role as a wife and mother. Their third daughter Liz marries charismatic, ambitious Rod and gives up her teaching position when she becomes pregnant with their first child. She is a dependent wife and mother during the fifties and sixties but leaves the marriage to begin a new life of self-sufficiency in the country with a new love. Helen is her daughter and is quite seriously affected by her parent''s divorce. As she matures she becomes typical of the young women of her generation, in that she sees sexual freedom, independence and equality at work and in relationships as her right. A major theme is the importance the preparation and serving of food is in the lives of women and how shared meals are so much a part of celebratory times in one''s life. Many aspects of food preparation are covered including the difficulty of providing nourishing family meals when many food items are rationed, the fun of entertaining friends and family and the sharing of meals, the challenge of growing and collecting food as part of a self-sustainable lifestyle.

Ribbons of Scarlet

release date: Oct 01, 2019
Ribbons of Scarlet
“The French Revolution comes alive through the eyes of six diverse and complex women, in the skilled hands of these amazing authors.”--Martha Hall Kelly, New York Times bestselling author of Lilac Girls A breathtaking, epic novel illuminating the hopes, desires, and destinies of princesses and peasants, harlots and wives, fanatics and philosophers—seven unforgettable women whose paths cross during one of the most tumultuous and transformative events in history: the French Revolution. Ribbons of Scarlet is a timely story of the power of women to start a revolution—and change the world. In late eighteenth-century France, women do not have a place in politics. But as the tide of revolution rises, women from gilded salons to the streets of Paris decide otherwise—upending a world order that has long oppressed them. Blue-blooded Sophie de Grouchy believes in democracy, education, and equal rights for women, and marries the only man in Paris who agrees. Emboldened to fight the injustices of King Louis XVI, Sophie aims to prove that an educated populace can govern itself--but one of her students, fruit-seller Louise Audu, is hungrier for bread and vengeance than learning. When the Bastille falls and Louise leads a women’s march to Versailles, the monarchy is forced to bend, but not without a fight. The king’s pious sister Princess Elisabeth takes a stand to defend her brother, spirit her family to safety, and restore the old order, even at the risk of her head. But when fanatics use the newspapers to twist the revolution’s ideals into a new tyranny, even the women who toppled the monarchy are threatened by the guillotine. Putting her faith in the pen, brilliant political wife Manon Roland tries to write a way out of France’s blood-soaked Reign of Terror while pike-bearing Pauline Leon and steely Charlotte Corday embrace violence as the only way to save the nation. With justice corrupted by revenge, all the women must make impossible choices to survive--unless unlikely heroine and courtesan’s daughter Emilie de Sainte-Amaranthe can sway the man who controls France’s fate: the fearsome Robespierre.

Men and women believe their mate is going to come prepackaged in perfection of love. However, this theory is far from the truth. It takes a conscious effort to build a solid foundation in any relationship and maintain the true essence of love. Donna Knight, founder of a nonprofit girl empowerment network, is a passionate advocate for love. While leading single love seekers on a journey of self-evaluation and exploration, she utilizes facts, case studies, Christian and New Age spirituality concepts, and personal commentary to analyze why and how we love; examine why marriage is misunderstood; and provide hope that it is possible to create lasting love within a fulfilling romantic relationship. Through it all, Knight teaches that we hold the power within ourselves to create the reality we want, not just in life but also in our relationships. Unlock the Mystery of Love provides step-by-step guidance that helps single people attain their relationship goals and find the kind of love that lasts a lifetime.

Like the Sun in Its Might

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Like the Sun in Its Might
The Song of Deborah and Barak is a poetic depiction of the Kishon Battle, an Israelite military offensive against the forces of Northern Canaan. Featuring rare vocabulary and unique poetic elements, the song is preserved in the book of Judges after its narrative counterpart (4:1-24). The relative dating of the two accounts is debated, as is the song''s historical provenance and redactional history. However, in the last forty years, the diachronic inquiries that characterized Judges scholarship in the early twentieth century have been eclipsed by synchronic studies that demonstrate the selectivity and intentional arrangement of the book''s contents. Given the purposeful design of the overarching Judges narrative, an investigation of the function of the song in its literary context is warranted. To discern its narrative function, in this dissertation I will investigate the contribution of the Song of Deborah and Barak to the microplot (i.e., the Kishon Battle) and the macroplot (i.e., the book of Judges) in terms of plot development, characterization, and thematic emphases. Attributed to the prophet Deborah and Barak, the Israelite general, on the day of Israelite victory over Canaan, the song is not simply an imaginative duplicate of the prose-style battle report in Judges 4. Instead, the song consists of the pedagogically motivated reflections of a prophet, concerned to interpret recent events theologically for the battle-weary Israelite people. As a culminating moment in the Kishon Battle, the song heralds the righteous acts of YHWH, the Divine Warrior, who is able to overcome the strongest of opponents with the weakest of instruments. The song also evaluates Israel''s response to the muster, exposing the hesitancy of certain tribes as doubting YHWH''s saving power. Within the broader context of the book of Judges, the song underscores the celebratory tone of the first three narrative cycles, which highlight the mighty deeds of YHWH, and challenges the people to respond appropriately to their recent saving history. Israel''s utter failure to heed the prophet''s words in the subsequent cycles renders the song condemnatory; there, Israel''s faithful Sovereign gives them over to their own faithless impulses.

"The 'non-traditional Ballet Body' in the Ballet"

release date: Jan 01, 2013
"The 'non-traditional Ballet Body' in the Ballet"
This is a cultural study on the dominance of whiteness and the exclusion of blackness in ballet. This research will focus on how the Anglo- European body image in ballet affects "the black dancing body" (Dixon Gottschild 2003), described in Brenda Dixon Gottschild''s The Black Dancing Body: A Geography from Coon to Cool. This research starts from cultural factors that contribute to why ballet has been traditionally viewed as a white upper-class art form, supported by material from Joann Kealiinohomoku''s An Anthropologist Looks at Ballet as an Ethnic Dance Form (1970), Jennifer Fisher''s "Ballet and Whiteness" (upcoming), and Cynthia Novack''s "Ballet, Gender, and Cultural Power" (1993).
