Make Your Own Wings

release date: May 31, 2020
Make Your Own Wings
Best-bud brothers Goudy and Painter were virtuosos at virtual flying, thanks to their rad video games and lots of practice. Unfortunately, this ability was only semi-satisfying; since they were actual BIRDS but could not actually fly. They were grounded because they were hatched without the ability to fly. But all the optimism and grit they could muster did not spare them from the disappointment of being flightless and from the pain of being bullied by some birds who could fly. Of course, there is a lot to learn from older brother Painter, who pretty much took these limitations and all kinds of other challenges in stride. Younger brother Goudy tried to be as philosophical as Painter. Goudy also knew that wishing he could fly would not make it so, but he wished that he could fly anyway. Hmmm? But . . . what if you have a troop of great friends with creative ideas, along with ways, means, and energy to make a worthy wish come true? What if a bird is also willing to work and practice, practice, practice for that wish? What if . . . ?

The Origins and Significance of Impeachment in the Career of Governor Huey P. Long

Yellowstone and the Smithsonian

release date: Feb 17, 2017
Yellowstone and the Smithsonian
In the winter of 1996-97, state and federal authorities shot or shipped to slaughter more than 1,100 Yellowstone National Park bison. Since that time, thousands more have been killed or hazed back into the park, as wildlife managers struggle to accommodate an animal that does not recognize man-made borders. Tensions over the hunting and preservation of the bison, an animal sacred to many Native Americans and an icon of the American West, are at least as old as the nation''s first national park. Established in 1872, in part "to protect against the wanton destruction of the fish and game," Yellowstone has from the first been dedicated to preserving wildlife along with the park’s other natural wonders. The Smithsonian Institution, itself founded in 1848, viewed the park’s resources as critical to its own mission, looking to Yellowstone for specimens to augment its natural history collections, and later to stock the National Zoo. How this relationship developed around the conservation and display of American wildlife, with these two distinct organizations coming to mirror one another, is the little-known story Diane Smith tells in Yellowstone and the Smithsonian. Even before its founding as a national park, and well before the creation of the National Park Service in 1916, the Yellowstone region served as a source of specimens for scientists centered in Washington, D.C. Tracing the Yellowstone-Washington reciprocity to the earliest government-sponsored exploration of the region, Smith provides background and context for many of the practices, such as animal transfers and captive breeding, pursued a century later by a new generation of conservation biologists. She shows how Yellowstone, through its relationship with the Smithsonian, the National Museum, and ultimately the National Zoo, helped elevate the iconic nature of representative wildlife of the American West, particularly bison. Her book helps all of us, not least of all historians and biologists, to better understand the wildlife management and conservation policies that followed.

Pursuing God's Best

release date: Mar 10, 2016
Pursuing God's Best
There is much emphasis on being or having the best. In baseball, Barry Bonds was said to be the best; in basketball, it was Michael Jordan; in golf, you hear, Tiger Woods; and tennis has Venus and Serena Williams. What is the common denominator with all of these individuals? Inherent in them is a desire to be greater than the normal athlete. This same thirst for greatness is in you, too. God has placed a seed in you that is a replica of Him. The pursuit of God''s best brings out what He has instilled in you, so that you might walk in God''s best. This book is a unique and profound message that will greatly bless you. If you are tired of mediocrity, as you read these words, you will find yourself motivated to pursue the fulfilled will of God for your life on the earth. To pursue God''s best means to press beyond the point where others have ventured. If you look at Barry Bonds, who first broke Hank Aaron''s home run record, then went on to break his own record, you will see someone who pressed past the usual boundaries. Michael Jordan pressed beyond the norm in basketball, then after retiring for a short time, he decided that idleness was not good for his life, so he returned to the game. He felt that the only way to be fulfilled was to return to the thing where he had accomplished his greatest feats. The boxer, Roy Jones, had been fighting for many years before most of us had ever heard his name. But, because he pressed beyond the normal, he is now the middleweight champion of the world and everyone knows his name! Mediocrity is not an option if you want God''s best for your life. What distinguishes the average believer from an anointed son of God? Anointed, mature sons of God, have a discipline cultivated through diligence in their quest to walk with God to pursue His best for their lives. Believers are re-born but sons transform into the measure and stature of Christ Jesus. The scriptures are replete with examples of ordinary people exemplifying extraordinary manifestations in spite of fear, setbacks, or environment. Yet, in spite of challenges, perils and generational chaos, we see many of them triumphant. What made the difference between Elisha, who received the mantle of Elijah, and Gehazi, who forfeited the prize for merchandise? Or Gideon and Ruth, in spite of generational chaos, rise to become the deliverer of a nation? Or, Daniel and the three Hebrew boys who maintained an excellent spirit even in captivity? Discipline is defined as self-control or orderly conduct; control obtained by enforcing compliance or order. I like to define it as "forced obedience". As we look into the scriptures (Ephesians 1) we discover that we were in God before the foundation of the world and we were sent forth onto the earth for his own pleasure and purpose. I believe God gives us glimpses of that purpose through dreams, goals, innate gifting and abilities, talents, and vision. If we grab hold to those small indications, we begin a journey to discover His true plan and purpose for our lives. By applying discipline and diligence, we can bring to full maturity the greatness deposited in us from the beginning, whether it is natural talent or learned skill. "The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute." - Proverbs 12:24 Unfortunately, many people resist diligence and settle or accept mediocrity: less than the best in life; not realizing pursuing the best God has for you will position you to have great success in life. This book is designed to not only motivate, but also activate you to look and move forward.

Psychological Sense of Community and Social Support Among College Students who Experience Grief

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Psychological Sense of Community and Social Support Among College Students who Experience Grief
Researchers have found that 22 to 30 percent of students have experienced a death loss of a friend or close friend (Balk, 1997). Due to the unique environment of a university, further research is needed to understand how perceived social support, emotional closeness, and psychological sense of community are related to past and present grief in a college student population. The purposes of the present study were to explore the correlates and predictors of current and past grief behaviors in a sample of undergraduate college students. The relationships between and among perceived social support from friends and family, the duration (in months) since college students'' death loss, their emotional closeness to the deceased person, and psychological sense of community, and their experiences of current grief and past grief behaviors were explored. One hundred and thirty-one undergraduate college students completed an online questionnaire. Results indicated a correlation between perceived social support with friends and family and psychological sense of community. Additionally, results showed a predictive relationship between emotional closeness, and past and present grief, and psychological sense of community being related to past grief. Follow up analyses indicated statistically significant group differences for White college students and college students of Color, with variables in White college students being predictors of grief and not in college students of Color. Study limitations, implications for theory and practice, and considerations for future research are discussed.

Essays on State Lottery Demand and Revenue Earmarks

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Essays on State Lottery Demand and Revenue Earmarks
Since the first modern state-sponsored lottery was instituted in New Hampshire in 1964, lotteries have proliferated to 42 states and the District of Colombia. With little exception, research has shown that these lotteries are a highly regressive form of taxation. However, this body of research does not take into account a theoretical finding that the manner in which collected funds are earmarked impacts participation patterns. The goal of this dissertation is to test this finding empirically. In the first analysis, I use sales data from the Tennessee Education Lottery and scholarship data from the TEL Scholarship program to test this theory directly. I find that instant game sales are increasing in the number of scholarships awarded in a given county and that the implicit tax incidence is less regressive than in certain other states. I also find that the relationship between scholarships and sales is stronger in higher income counties. Theory does not hold for Powerball sales. This may be due to a misconception that buying into a multi-state game does not directly subsidize programs in Tennessee. In the second analysis, I focus on the Texas Lottery, which began as a revenue stream for the state''s General Fund, but eventually became a dedicated revenue stream for K-12 education. I exploit this change to test for a structural break in the demand for two lottery games. Then, I extend an existing theory of lottery demand to take this structural break into account. I find that there is a structural break at the time the earmark is implemented, and that the lottery is less regressive after the earmark.
