Voices That Count
Brought to life by a host of talented creators, this graphic novel anthology dissects what it means to be a woman in today’s hyper-masculine world. VOICES THAT COUNT is a collection of short comics that celebrates women. Printed in English for the first time, this Spanish collection highlights and uplifts women’s voices, collecting their stories of life, love, and empowerment. Interacting with everything from the realities of gender imbalance in the workplace—through a gender-flipped lens—to toxic beauty standards taking a toll on the body image of young girls, VOICES THAT COUNT gives women a space to recount their struggles and triumphs. In the words of artist Ada Diez, “This comic shows the importance of an unconditionally supportive family environment, the necessity of the right educational groundwork as a feminist principle, and the key to fight for your dreams—understanding the importance of an individual’s independence, forgetting what’s been established by gender rules.” This inspiring and thought-provoking volume collects nine stories from some of Spain’s best and brightest female authors and illustrators.

The poems in this manuscript explore the influence of place on the author’s attempts to map the uncertain terrain of relationships with ourselves, each other, and the environment. Internal and external landscapes are constantly changing as the result of natural forces and because of the stories that we tell ourselves. In this collection, the author attempts to examine the elusive nature of the past, whether and how it is still present in her world, and her own place in desert paradigm.

Effectiveness of the Bridge/Adapt Program on Functional Skill Generalization After Acquired Brain Injury

Effectiveness of the Bridge/Adapt Program on Functional Skill Generalization After Acquired Brain Injury
This study explored the effectiveness of the Bridge/Adapt program for generalizing increased cognition to functional skills. Three participants, identified as having significant cognitive impairments as measured by the Cognistat assessment, participated in the Bridge/Adapt program, an eight-week program that includes both remedial and compensatory components. The remedial component used was a computer-based cognitive rehabilitation program called Parrot Software. Past studies have proven computer-based cognitive rehabilitation to be effective in increasing overall cognition. The Bridge/Adapt module is the compensatory component that utilized a variety of strategies and everyday tasks to facilitate the generalization of improved cognition to functional performance. A homework component was also implemented for participants to incorporate the strategies learned in the Bridge/Adapt program to their own meaningful occupations. This study utilized a pretest posttest design using the medication box assessment to measure functional performance. Results of the medication box assessment indicated that one of the three participants demonstrated generalization of skills from improved cognition to functional performance. Future research should include re-evaluating the Bridge/Adapt modules and the medication box assessment. Recommendations to improve future implementation are provided to increase likelihood of generalization.

Three Essays on Children Well Being, Women Empowerment and Social Programs

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Three Essays on Children Well Being, Women Empowerment and Social Programs
Several social programs have been implemented in developing countries with the aim of improving children''s and women''s well-being. Despite the existing evidence on the impact of these programs, there are still some knowledge gaps where this thesis aims to fill. First, programs such as Conditional Cash Transfers have been effective at increasing school attendance, but do not necessarily at achieving a large reduction on child labor. This thesis shows that the relative price of mothers and children labor is crucial to observe a reduction in child labor, due to the program. Children''s working time is going to largely decrease in cases where mother''s labor time is less expensive as compared to children''s. Second, the evaluation of programs targeted to early childhood has been largely focused on nutrition, health, cognitive and non-cognitive skills, leaving aside parenting outcomes. Evidence found in this thesis shows that early childhood interventions impact parenting practices, particularly how children are disciplined. Parents of children who are largely exposed to these interventions use less physical violence as a way to discipline their children. Finally, women''s empowerment plays a key role as an outcome and as a channel in the evaluation of these interventions. However, we lack information on how to approach and assess women''s empowerment. This thesis shows that social capital seems to better capture women''s bargaining power, as compared to traditional dimensions, such as participation in household decisions. This later analysis is done to understand the relation between women''s empowerment and domestic violence.

Exercising Control in the Face of Uncertainty

release date: Jan 01, 2001
Exercising Control in the Face of Uncertainty
Uncertainty is arguably one of the most pervasive "symptoms" of multiple sclerosis (MS). It pervades the lives of people living with MS and differs for each individual living with the diagnosis. The uncertainty begins before the disease is even named, and continues because of an uncertain prognosis, uncertainty in relationships and uncertainty about acts of daily living. I ask if when faced with such pervasive uncertainty, do people with MS then become submissive and passive, or do they find ways to exert control? Earlier work, including in-depth interviews with 29 people, suggested the importance of uncertainty to the experience of living with MS. Quantitative analysis using ordinary least squares regression analysis of survey data gathered from 732 people in the Chicago area further confirmed that, indeed, people with MS do find ways to exert control. From this qualitative and quantitative survey data, three analytically distinct ways to strategize emerged: the strategy to become an expert, the strategy of loss prevention and the strategy of shifting investments. In this dissertation, I demonstrate how people with MS seek out information to become expert, make contingency plans to minimize losses, and change the value they place on those things now affected by irreducible uncertainties. Finally, I argue that all discussions of chronic illness must include the perspective of the person living with the illness rather than proceeding from the assumption that those with chronic diseases must do all of the learning.
