The Little Book of Joy

release date: Sep 27, 2022
The Little Book of Joy
Nobel Peace Prize winners His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu share their own childhood struggles to show young readers how they can thrive and find joy even during the most challenging times in this picture book adaptation of the international bestseller The Book of Joy. If you just focus on the thing that is making you sad, then the sadness is all you see. But if you look around, you will see that joy is everywhere. In their only collaboration for children, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu use their childhood stories to show young people how to find joy even in hard times and why sharing joy with others makes it grow. The two spiritual masters tell a simple story, vibrantly brought to life by bestselling illustrator Rafael López, of how every child has joy inside them, even when it sometimes hides, and how we can find it, keep it close, and grow it by sharing it with the world. Sprung from the friendship, humor, and deep affection between these holy men, the book is a perfectly timed and important gift from two revered spiritual leaders to children. It is a reminder that joy is abundant—no matter what challenges we face—and has the power to transform the world around us even in the darkest of times.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE LAUREATES HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA AND ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU HAVE SURVIVED MORE THAN FIFTY YEARS OF EXILE AND THE SOUL-CRUSHING VIOLENCE OF OPPRESSION. DESPITE THEIR HARDSHIPS – OR, AS THEY WOULD SAY, BECAUSE OF THEM – THEY ARE TWO OF THE MOST JOYFUL PEOPLE ON THE PLANET. IN APRIL 2015, ARCHBISHOP TUTU TRAVELLED TO THE DALAI LAMA’S HOME IN DHARAMSALA, INDIA, TO CELEBRATE HIS HOLINESS’S EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY AND TO CREATE THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR OTHERS. THEY TRADED INTIMATE STORIES, TEASED EACH OTHER CONTINUALLY AND SHARED THEIR SPIRITUAL PRACTICES. BY THE END OF A WEEK FILLED WITH LAUGHTER AND PUNCTUATED WITH TEARS, THESE TWO GLOBAL HEROES HAD STARED INTO THE ABYSS AND DESPAIR OF OUR TIMES AND REVEALED HOW TO LIVE A LIFE BRIMMING WITH JOY. THIS BOOK OFFERS US A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THEIR ASTONISHING AND UNPRECEDENTED WEEK TOGETHER, FROM THE FIRST EMBRACE TO THE FINAL GOODBYE.

Health, Trade and Human Rights

Health, Trade and Human Rights
This work contains forewords by Desmond M. Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus, Cape Town, South Africa and Mogobe Ramose, Chairperson and Professor of Philosophy, Department of Philosophy, University of South Africa. "Health, Trade and Human Rights" shows how a policy of ''free'' rather than ''fair'' trade increasingly undermines Third World health. It clearly illustrates how the looming environmental crisis combined with growing levels of health inequity will have adverse effects and details precisely how the ''basic human rights'' enshrined in the UN Charter have gradually become subsidiary to the dictates of free trade, enforced by the World Trade Organisation. This groundbreaking new book argues the need for impartial, data-based, and transnational arbitration of equity in health and other human rights - and suggests how this might be accomplished without violence to national rights, with an emphasis on ''regional free trade''. "Health, Trade and Human Rights" provides vital, thought provoking information for general readers with an interest in the Third World and social welfare. Academics and students studying development, international studies and public health will find it invaluable, as will healthcare professionals, international healthcare organisations, care agencies, and international charities. Policy makers and shapers in communities and government will find the content revelatory as will political activists and those with an interest in equality and globalisation. ''[The book] criticises the basis, the method and the extent to which the politics of wealth continues to undermine and violate the right of the poor to good health. The combination of experience with scientific rigour is presented in accessible everyday language. It is seductive; inviting the curiosity of the reader to last until the very end of the book. MacDonald''s message is clear and unambiguous: war is no longer the father of all things. Instead, justice is the mother of all peace.'' - Mogobe Ramose, in his Foreword. ''Astonishingly accessible, informing and inspiring. Statistically sound, penetratingly. accurate, admirably balanced. Theodore MacDonald writes with passion, as well as with sense. Much of what he has to say is drawn from his own experience working as a medical doctor and a mathematician in a broad range of the world''s poorest nations. But overarching that is a powerful insight into social and economic issues, along with well-honed skills as a communicator. I am pleased to recommend this splendid book.'' - Desmond M. Tutu, in his Foreword.

Kniha radosti

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Kniha radosti
Lze cvičit náš přístup k sobě samým a k ostatním kolem nás. Kniha radosti zprostředkovává dlouholeté zkušenosti dvou neuvěřitelných mužů, kteří navzdory nepředstavitelně těžkým životním zkouškám zůstávají veselými, nezbednými, soucitnými, odpouštějícími a neztrácejí víru ve všechny lidské bytosti.

(Desmond Tutu)

In God's Hands

release date: Dec 04, 2014
In God's Hands
In God''s Hands is the 2015 Archbishop of Canterbury''s Lent Book. In this little gem of a book, Archbishop Desmond Tutu distils the wisdom forged through a childhood of poverty and apartheid, an adulthood lived in the glare of the world''s media, and the long and agonising struggle for truth and reconciliation in South Africa, into the childlike simplicity which Jesus tells us characterises the Kingdom of God. Archbishop Tutu has produced a meditation on the infinite love of God and the infinite value of the human individual. Not only are we in God`s hands, he says, our names are engraved on his palms. Throughout an often turbulent life, Archbishop Tutu has fought for justice and against oppression and prejudice. As we learn in this book, what has driven him forward is an unshakeable belief that human beings are created in the image of God and are infinitely valuable. Each one of us is a God-carrier, a tabernacle, a sanctuary of the Divine Trinity. God loves us not because we are lovable but because he first loved us. And this turns our values upside down. In this sense the Gospel is the most radical thing imaginable. It is extremely moving that in this book Archbishop Tutu returns to something so simple and so profound after a life in which he has been involved in political, social and ethical issues that have seemed to be so very complex.

O LIVRO DO PERDAO

The Book of Forgiving

release date: Mar 18, 2014
The Book of Forgiving
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Chair of The Elders, and Chair of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, along with his daughter, the Reverend Mpho Tutu, offer a manual on the art of forgiveness—helping us to realize that we are all capable of healing and transformation. Tutu''s role as the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission taught him much about forgiveness. If you asked anyone what they thought was going to happen to South Africa after apartheid, almost universally it was predicted that the country would be devastated by a comprehensive bloodbath. Yet, instead of revenge and retribution, this new nation chose to tread the difficult path of confession, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Each of us has a deep need to forgive and to be forgiven. After much reflection on the process of forgiveness, Tutu has seen that there are four important steps to healing: Admitting the wrong and acknowledging the harm; Telling one''s story and witnessing the anguish; Asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness; and renewing or releasing the relationship. Forgiveness is hard work. Sometimes it even feels like an impossible task. But it is only through walking this fourfold path that Tutu says we can free ourselves of the endless and unyielding cycle of pain and retribution. The Book of Forgiving is both a touchstone and a tool, offering Tutu''s wise advice and showing the way to experience forgiveness. Ultimately, forgiving is the only means we have to heal ourselves and our aching world.

Tilgivelse
Desmond Tutu er erkebiskop emeritus i Den anglikanske kirke i Sør-Afrika. Datteren er prest i samme kirke.
