Che la democrazia sia in crisi è ormai un luogo comune del dibattito politico in Occidente. In tutta Europa, i cittadini votano sempre meno, sono sempre più inclini a prestare fede a retoriche populiste, non credono più nella classe politica. Che fare? In molti si sono posti questo interrogativo, ma in pochi hanno risposto con una proposta altrettanto radicale e sorprendente di quella di David van Reybrouck: abolire le elezioni, non scegliere più con il meccanismo elettorale i componenti del Parlamento. E affidarsi al sorteggio per determinare chi ha la responsabilità di scrivere le leggi dello stato. Se ci sembra inconcepibile un simile scenario, sostiene van Reybrouck, è perché abbiamo un’idea sbagliata della funzione e dei vantaggi delle elezioni come metodo di selezione della classe dirigente: per molti di noi le libere elezioni a suffragio universale sono sinonimo di democrazia, e solo i regimi totalitari le hanno abolite. Ma la storia dell’affermarsi delle elezioni nei sistemi politici europei è molto meno lineare e contiene diverse sorprese. Cosa significa per una società contemporanea fare a meno delle elezioni? Come potrebbero essere prese le decisioni politiche? Da chi? Con quali regole e garanzie? E perché sorteggiare i parlamentari più o meno come si fa con le giurie popolari nei tribunali potrebbe dare risultati migliori di quelli attuali? Van Reybrouck porta alla luce un dibattito sui pregi e i difetti della democrazia partecipativa in corso da tempo nelle università, e offre al lettore una serie di idee nuove, esperienze pratiche, tentativi concreti di nuovi modelli di governance. Un libro che apre la mente, toglie molta polvere e ragnatele dal dibattito sulla crisi della democrazia, fa strage di luoghi comuni e retoriche consolidate, per andare al nocciolo di un problema attualissimo, che potrebbe avere una soluzione radicale e inaspettata.

One hundred years later, the First World War has returned to public consciousness, often through republished photographs of its horrors: the muddy trenches, the devastated battlefields, the maimed survivors. Because the most popular cameras of the time were the Vest Pocket Kodak and other crude film cameras, the "look" of that Great War is grainy, blurred, and monochrome. This book presents a startlingly different First World War, one seen through rare glass plate photographs made by the war's most gifted cameramen, selected and digitally restored by Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer. Scanned from the original plates, with scratches and other flaws painstakingly removed, these oversized reproductions reveal the war in uncanny and previously unseen clarity. Also startling are the unfamiliar scenes selected by De Keyzer and elucidated by historian David Van Reybrouck: staged scenes of men in training (and of children imitating them), dramatic industrial photographs, landscapes of astonishing destruction, pictures of African colonial troops on the Western front, and postmortem portraits of thirteen Belgian soldiers killed in battle on the second day of the war. A quarter of the photographs in this book are in color, made with the autochrome process. The book includes a preface by Geoff Dyer, who refers to "the extraordinary power and surprise of this hoard of photographs" and discusses the disconcerting temporal effects of seeing such unusual pictures of a historical event we strongly associate with entirely different imagery.

In Vlaanderen en Nederland, maar eigenlijk in heel Europa, groeit de kloof tussen hoog- en laagopgeleiden. Aan de ene kant zijn er de kosmopolieten die nippen aan hun glas chardonnay, terwijl ze de lof van de globalisering zingen, aan de andere kant is er de 'getatoeëerde klasse', die naar Nederlandstalige liedjes luistert en zich schaart achter nieuwe vormen van nationalisme. Laaggeschoolden dringen nauwelijks nog door tot het parlement. Hun demografische meerderheid is teruggebracht tot een democratische minderheid. Meer dan wie ook vertolken populistische partijen vandaag de stem van de laaggeschoolden in de samenleving. Populisme is volgens David Van Reybrouck niet noodzakelijk een gevaar voor de democratie. Het verwoordt op onhandige wijze soms een blijvend verlangen naar politieke betrokkenheid van het laagopgeleide volk. We doen er goed aan dat ernstig te nemen. Er is niet minder, maar beter populisme nodig.
