Whiskey tango foxtrot : roman

What the Nurse Saw

What the Nurse Saw
This did not look like a ""choice"" to me. It looked exactly like what it was... a pan full of baby parts! What the Nurse Saw is the unbelievable true story of my experience as a nurse working in an abortion clinic---how witnessing many abortions, including a late-term procedure referred to as partial-birth abortion, changed my life forever. I now believe it is my mission to share with as many people as possible the truth about abortion. I want to share with you the details as if you were standing silently beside me in the operating room. We realize that everyone who picks up this book will not be pro-life. I myself was pro-choice at the start of my journey. It is our greatest hope that people, no matter what their opinion, will decide to be pro-truth. Although Oprah Winfrey and I may not share all of the same views on abortion; something she said many times struck a chord with me. Oprah said, ""Once you know better, you do better."" At the end of my three days in an abortion clinic, I knew better. My testimony before Congress, my volunteer work, and my continued effort to educate others in writing this book is my attempt to do better! I challenge you, the reader, after knowing all the facts, to do the same: Better!

Antonin Artaud

release date: Apr 15, 2016
Antonin Artaud
Poet, actor, playwright, surrealist, drug addict, asylum inmate—Antonin Artaud (1896–1949) is one of the twentieth century’s most enigmatic personalities and idiosyncratic thinkers. In this biography, David A. Shafer takes readers on a voyage through Artaud’s life, which he spent amid the company of France’s most influential cultural figures, even as he stood apart from them. Shafer casts Artaud as a person with tenacious values. Even though Artaud was born in the material comfort of a bourgeois family from Marseille, he uncompromisingly rejected bourgeois values and norms. Becoming famous as an actor, director, and author, he would use his position to challenge contemporary assumptions about the superiority of the West, the function of speech, the purpose of culture, and the individual’s agency over his or her body. In this way—as Shafer points out—Artaud embodied the revolutionary spirit of France. And as Shafer shows, although Artaud was immensely productive, he struggled profoundly with his creative process, hindered by narcotics addiction, increasing paranoia, and an overwhelming sense of alienation. Situating Artaud’s contributions within the frenzy of his life and that of the twentieth century at large, this book is a compelling and fresh biography that pays tribute to its subject’s lasting cultural reverberations.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Three young adults grapple with the usual thirty-something problems -- boredom, authenticity, an omnipotent online oligarchy -- in David Shafer''s darkly comic debut novel. The Committee, an international cabal of industrialists and media barons, is on the verge of privatizing all information. Dear Diary, an idealistic online Underground, stands in the way of that takeover, using radical politics, classic spycraft, and technology that makes Big Data look like dial-up. Into this secret battle stumbles an unlikely trio: Leila Majnoun, a disillusioned non-profit worker; Leo Crane, an unhinged trustafarian; and Mark Deveraux, a phony self-betterment guru who works for the Committee. Leo and Mark were best friends in college, but early adulthood has set them on diverging paths. Growing increasingly disdainful of Mark''s platitudes, Leo publishes a withering takedown of his ideas online. But the Committee is reading -- and erasing -- Leo''s words. On the other side of the world, Leila''s discoveries about the Committee''s far-reaching ambitions threaten to ruin those who are closest to her. In the spirit of William Gibson and Chuck Palahniuk, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is both a suspenseful global thriller and an emotionally truthful novel about the struggle to change the world in- and outside your head.

Plutonium Soil Stabilization Study at the Nevada Test Site

Plutonium Soil Stabilization Study at the Nevada Test Site
"The efficacy of a tall-oil pitch emulsion in suppressing dust emissions, some of which may be associated with radionuclides, was tested at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). This study was one component of a comprehensive effort to characterize the long-term effectiveness of the Encapco treatment in reducing windblown dust emissions and related inhalation risk when the dust is associated with radionuclide contaminants. ... The Smoky Site, a location at the NTS where soils were expected to be emissive under windy conditions, and where there are concerns about soil emissivity because of 239PU, 240PU, and 241AM contamination, was chosen to conduct field tests of the Encapco product. The soil emission suppression studies were conducted on the distal portions of an alluvial fan (the "Smoky Fan") where soils were finer textured and more prone to resuspension"--Executive summary.
