The Bible's First History

release date: Jan 04, 2018
The Bible's First History
This is a book about an ancient writer, the J writer—the Yahwist—who produced a work of political imagination. This work is embedded mainly in the first four books of the Bible, best known for some of the most popular and influential biblical stories in Genesis and Exodus. The purpose of the book is to represent the whole of the original story with attention to its own meaning, without the influence of the other literary strands with which it was later supplemented. Therefore the work includes a fresh, complete translation of the text of the J writer, who produced the Bible’s first history. The translation itself helps to establish more clearly than ever the integrity of the J writer. The concern here is WHEN and WHY this history was written, especially in light of the concerns for justice and prosperity. Throughout it is demonstrated HOW and WHY this history comes from the court of David; it is a royal history of David’s subjects as though they were descended from pastoral nomads such as Abram, Isaac, and Jacob. It is argued that the intended audience of the history was probably those bedouin who regularly visited the court of David in Hebron and Jerusalem. Here is a bold and brilliant representation of the J writer’s composition, perhaps as it was originally intended to be read or heard. This ancient tour de force takes on new life in the hands of these skilled interpreters.

Good Thinking: Why Flawed Logic Puts Us All at Risk and How Critical Thinking Can Save the World

release date: Mar 30, 2021
Good Thinking: Why Flawed Logic Puts Us All at Risk and How Critical Thinking Can Save the World
Good Thinking is our best defense against anti-vaccine paranoia, climate denial, and other dire threats of today Publisher’s Note: Good Thinking was previously published in the UK as The Irrational Ape. In our ever-more-polarized society, there’s at least one thing we still agree on: The world is overrun with misinformation, faulty logic, and the gullible followers who buy into it all. Of course, we’re not among them—are we? Scientist David Robert Grimes is on a mission to expose the logical fallacies and cognitive biases that drive our discourse on a dizzying array of topics–from vaccination to abortion, 9/11 conspiracy theories to dictatorial doublespeak, astrology to alternative medicine, and wrongful convictions to racism. But his purpose in Good Thinking isn’t to shame or place blame. Rather, it’s to interrogate our own assumptions–to develop our eye for the glimmer of truth in a vast sea of dubious sources–in short, to think critically. Grimes’s expert takedown of irrationality is required reading for anyone wondering why bad thinking persists and how we can defeat it. Ultimately, no one changes anyone else’s mind; we can only change our own–and give others the tools to do the same.

The Return of the Circuit Rider

release date: Mar 01, 2011
The Return of the Circuit Rider
In the process of writing two short collections of light hearted material, (one published and one yet to be published), the author became acutely aware that he could not continue forward without addressing what he considered to be the most important issues of human existence. All of us have asked ourselves the questions, "What is the meaning of life" and "Why am I here"? Some have rejected the idea of an eternal soul, some are undecided, while others are largely unconcerned, but the author has chosen to embrace the concept and run with it. He believes there is a single overriding mission for every individual alive today. The sole purpose of this life is to prepare for the next one, and every person has been given the ability to control his own destiny. When compared to eternity, our lives are like a single knot in a rope that stretches around the world. From the foundation of the earth, a plan has been in place to allow humanity to share the wonders of eternity with the Creator of all things. Those who follow that plan will be rewarded accordingly, while those who prefer to separate themselves from the influence of a Higher Power, will be granted their wish in eternity. If this book convinces one person to follow the plan that leads to redemption, then it will have been well worth the effort.

Wild West Adventures in the Great African Bush
Kindly please read this and then send this message to your relatives, friends, and business associates in South Africa and overseas. "Wild West Adventures in the Great African Bush" by David Robert Dalton (with contributions by Mike, Trevor & Garth Dalton) Embark on Wild West Adventures in the Great African Bush with author David Robert Dalton, who takes you to the African bush in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Inspired by his and his brothers fond memories of growing up in the little copper mining town of Messina (now called Musina) in South Africa, with written contributions from his three elder brothers, he pens a wacky, side-splitting tale of his adventures growing up in the little bushveld town. Set in the African bushveld (a.k.a. the Great Arizona Desert), the three elder Dalton cowpokes are members of a gang dubbed the Messina Dalton Gang, after the infamous Wild West Dalton Gang, who roar around on their two-wheeler steeds and talk in tough Western jargon. The youngest Dalton cowpoke, six-year-old, David, calls himself Gunslinger and his main ambition in life is to become a recognized member of the gang. Together with his little African Pawnee sidekick-hombre, Tokoloshie-Two-Feathers, and his three-legged Jack Russell dog, Jock, Gunslinger tries hard to impress, but continually messes up. The story, told in a light-hearted tongue-in-cheek fashion, as told through the fertile imagination of a six-year-old boy, but is written for adults. Theres a delightful array of wacky small-town characters that help the story come alive, making you feel part of it. Theres the delicious Danish Tart, who runs the Mine Rec Club bar, Speedy, the towns beefy Harley-riding policeman, Paparazzo, the long-nosed Italian crime reporter, Frank&Earnest (the same person!), the hip Holy father, the disapproving Dominee, Mrs Bogey, the Mine Managers snooty wife, and the gangs all-suffering parents, the Old Man and Daisy-Anne, who all contribute to the hilarity! Dredging up ones own childhood memories, its a wonderful nostalgic tale to touch the hearts of all ages! Its so darned funny; itll have you laughing out loud! A charming and endearing must-read story for all ages! I simple loved it! Brenda George, author of Falling Leaves and Mountain Ashes. I warmed to this delightful and endearing book a unique African TO-KILL-A-MOCKINGBIRD look into the mind of a child of those nostalgic times. Is the Bible True?

release date: Mar 07, 2018
Is the Bible True?
Is the Bible True? offers a lively, down-to-earth look at the origins and nature of the Bible. Minister David Ord and biblical historian Robert Coote address many of the questions raised when ordinary lay readers come face-to-face with dilemmas posed by modern biblical scholarship. Part I begins with the question of how the Bible should be read. Is the Bible True? traces the experience of a person who has grown up reading the Bible literally but who, on closer inspection, discovers that "literally" is not nearly literal enough. The study of Scripture that ensues leads to a new approach to reading the Bible and uncovering its meaning for today. Part II asks how the Bible came to be. Who began the writing process, and when? How were the books collected into the form we know now? Exactly what kind of book is the Bible? Part III shows how understanding the history and reality of the Bible can make reading it a more meaningful experience--especially in sorting out the difficult issues that confront us every day. Is the Bible True? succeeds in showing how a more sophisticated understanding of the scriptures can enhance rather than undermine faith. It is required reading for everyone who reads and studies the Bible.

By doing so, he unwittingly opens a Pandoras Box of hilarious and humiliating events that will test just how far they are willing to go to get a laugh. David knows the trips will be anything but boring because he and his mom have been causing a scene for as long as he can remember. He describes her as a cross between Bea Arthur and Karen Walker from Will and Grace, and she is notorious for bending the rules. But nothing can prepare him for escapades that include digging his mom out of a rain gutter in Costa Rica and being dragged across the Arabian Desert by a psychotic camel named Forrest Hump. As the vacations unfold, David discovers that although he and his mom are having the time of their life, she is ready to share a secret that will change everything.

Merika, Love Poems

release date: Apr 30, 2013
Merika, Love Poems
Merika, Love Poems uses free-form, poetical choruses to laud, love, loathe, lambaste, and lecture on modern society, politics, and empire. MLP tells about shedding the young and deluded belief in the sanctity of the American Dream; encountering, grappling with, and accepting the truth about injustices and inequalities born of immunity from consequences; and quitting the narcotic of capitalistic mania. MLP sings about every person pouring personal vices into a social-economic-political system and claiming victimization from the byproduct. MLP chronicles the attempt to reclaim responsibility and morality, the attempt to formulate honest living, even when such honesty costs painful self-reflection. MLP is first and foremost a love story, just not the kind of love story that ends, necessarily, with happily ever after.
