Paper Liberals

release date: Sep 30, 2000
Paper Liberals
The death of General Francisco Franco in November of 1975 ended thirty-six years of fascist-style dictatorship in Spain. The subsequent transition to liberal parliamentary government was remarkably smooth, particularly when compared to the recent difficulties experienced by other states, such as the former Soviet Republics and Eastern Europe. Ortiz traces Spain's success back to the development of a liberal tradition and a public sphere in the last decades of the 19th century during the Restoration period. He uses this era as a test case to demonstrate that liberal practices can develop even within a political situation where state institutions and the social infrastructure do not necessarily support them. Paper Liberals dispels the notion that Western Europe ends at the Pyrenees and argues instead that, while on the periphery, Spain should not be excluded from the mainstream of European history. Clarifying a period in contemporary Spanish history that has been largely misunderstood, this study underscores the importance of the Spanish example as a comparative model to the countries customarily thought of as the European center (Britain, France, and Germany). Ortiz examines the formation and expansion of liberal political culture during the Regency of Maria Christina from 1885 to 1902, and he details the pivotal role of the Spanish press, which dominated the public sphere of Regency Spain, as the vehicle for this remarkable transformation.

Big Papi (Spanish Edition)

release date: Apr 17, 2007
Big Papi (Spanish Edition)
The Spanish-language edition of the inspiring and dramatic story of Big Papi, from growing up poor to becoming one of the most popular and successful players in Major League Baseball.

MOSAIC A comprehensive guide to making mosaicMosaics are traditionally made from tiles that are a form of glass. Glass is one of the most persistent manmade materials. There are faience (glass) beads that have been dated to the beginning of the historical period and a faience workshop has been dug at Abydos, Egypt that dates to 5500 BC. A glass tile mosaic, if structurally sound, could last for 10,000 years or longer. With modern glass which is less subject to spalling and deterioration, it might be much longer.GET YOUR COPY TODAY

Using Infrasound Waves to Monitor Tropospheric Weather and Crater Morphology Changes

Using Infrasound Waves to Monitor Tropospheric Weather and Crater Morphology Changes
"Infrasound waves generated during volcanic eruptions and recorded near the vent are used to study both changing atmospheric conditions and volcano eruption source characteristics. Infrasound data were recorded for a 32 month period at Volcán Tungurahua (Ecuador) by a five-station network located within 6.5 km from the vent. Infrasound detections made through cross-network correlation indicate cyclic eruptive behavior, which is corroborated by reports from the Ecuadorian monitoring agency. Cross-network correlation lag times are used to compute _10 m resolution infrasound source positions, which take into account NOAA models of local wind and temperature. Variable infrasound-derived source locations suggests source migration during the 32 months of analyzed data. Such source position variability is expected following energetic eruptions that destructively altered crater/vent morphology. Significant changes in crater/vent morphology are corroborated in imagery obtained during regular overflights. Variations in cross-network lag times over short time periods (minutes to days) are observed when vent location is stable, and these variations are attributed to short term changes in atmospheric structure. Assuming a fixed source location, calculated air temperatures and winds in Tungurahua's vicinity (

The Technology Puzzle

release date: Jan 01, 2004
The Technology Puzzle
The incorporation of new technology into a spacecraft development project is one of the most significant risks that the project team faces. The spacecraft design and construction schedule must match the development and maturity schedule of any new technology. New technology is often born in a laboratory, with little thought to the requirements that might make it a useful project, regardless of the application. To a spacecraft development team, new technology is risky because it must meet performance requirements related to its particular application ? such as a computer processor ? and it must also meet requirements for operation in space ? which include radiation resistance, low power consumption and high reliability. Even the use of proven technology in a different application poses risk. Thus the laboratory perspective and the implementation perspective do not see eye-to-eye, and this document presents a solution that includes a quantitative metric of technological maturity and the role of a technology broker that shepherds a technology from the laboratory bench to the spacecraft.

The Sensory Order, Individualism and Economic Knowledge in the Work of Hayek

The Sensory Order, Individualism and Economic Knowledge in the Work of Hayek
The Sensory Order (1952) is a work on theoretical psychology, which can be understood as an attempt to explain the relationship between cosmos and mind. By addressing these matters, Hayek established solid basis for his own ideas about economic knowledge and the problem to be solved by economics. The purpose of this essay is to give a plausible account of why The Sensory Order takes a crucial place in the special manner in which Hayek approaches both individualism and economic knowledge. This exercise will help recognize the reasons that led to Hayek's interest in theoretical psychology, and how his ideas on this field permeate his understanding of the subject matter of the social sciences.

Family Doctor, Educator and Learner
"Introduction: Clinical teachers perform multiple and overlapping tasks in clinical work and education. They are therefore expected to juggle many professional identities such as educator and clinician. While professional identity has attracted much attention from medical education scholars over the past two decades, little is still known about how clinical teachers manage and make sense of their multiple professional identities. The present research explores the lived experiences of clinical teachers as they negotiate their professional identities in the context of a faculty development program.Methodology and methods: The present study is an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), which is a methodological approach that enables a detailed explanation of how people conceptualize their personal and social worlds while adopting an insider’s perspective. Six teachers in family medicine attending an international faculty development program were purposively sampled. In-depth semi-structured individual interviews were conducted and were analyzed using the thematic analysis approach of IPA studies. Results: Although each participant had a unique lived experience and sense-making process, commonalities across the cases were identified. All participants made sense of their multiple professional identities by identifying a single identity embedding others. Participants developed and integrated their professional identities in agreement with their personal identities, values, and beliefs, striving thus for identity consonance. Participants understood their craft as a relational process by which they weave themselves into their context and intertwine their experience with that of others. For some, the faculty development program was an opportunity to understand a collective identity and recognize a community of practice. Participants, however, diverged when recognizing their peers; while some named a single group (family physicians), others had a more comprehensive view and included healthcare professionals, students, and even patients. Discussion: Clinical teachers in this research negotiated their multifaceted identities by recognizing an ‘embedding identity,’ which allowed them to have a certain unity or harmony in their daily practice. Participants also made sense of their professional identities by looking for common points between their demands. At the same time, the ways in which participants saw themselves influenced how they behaved and related to others accordingly. Understanding these endeavours enriches current perspectives of what it is like to be a teacher in family medicine. Faculty development leaders ought to consider these perspectives so that they can tailor these programs and thus contribute to better quality medical training and clinical practice"--
