Torched
David Lopez Escobales is a single father of one, Lea Lopez. He has been writing poetry for a hobby since his teenage years. In 2015, he was inspired to write a variety of concept poetry based upon some of his life''s experiences. As a United States Navy veteran, David has traveled to many countries around the world. The cultures and the diversity of people he met on his travels, gave him a different outlook on life. One in which he tries to incorporate into his writing. With the support of family and friends, David''s dream is to leave a legacy that would inspire others, just as he was inspired. His hope is that his readers will be touched by his words. He further hopes to bring encouragement and understanding to some of his life''s deepest topics.

Analysis and Application of Silicon Nano-particles Produced Via Continuous Flow Non-thermal Plasmas
Continuous flow non-thermal plasma reactors are being investigated for their ability to efficiently produce high quality nanoparticles. While many nanomaterials can be produced via continuous flow non-thermal plasma reactors, silicon is of particular interest, due to its abundance and relevance in many energy related fields. Significant gaps still exist in the understanding of the kinetics responsible for particle growth, structural evolution, and surface termination of continuous flow non-thermal plasma reactor produced particles. Particle interaction with plasma radicals results in the heating of the particles, which in turn affects the kinetics of particle growth, structural evolution, and surface termination during synthesis and processing. We have investigated the details of plasma-nanoparticle interaction by using in-flight and in-situ characterization techniques. For the first time, we have measured the temperature of a free-standing particle immersed in a non-equilibrium processing plasma.

Quixotically Courageous Leaders

Quixotically Courageous Leaders
The purpose of this critical multi-case qualitative study was to explore reciprocal connections between participants and other stakeholders established through the community-school partnerships (CSPs) at three Latina/o majority secondary schools in an economically disadvantaged region of Southwest Texas. To achieve its purpose the study examined the ways in which various campus and district level leaders demonstrated ownership of the CSPs, especially focusing on how the connections with parents and the community were established and maintained. Additionally, the study investigated the connection between the program perceptions of participating parents and other community members in relation to the school and district based perceptions of the programs’ outcomes. This type of research could lend key insights to educational leaders and practitioners working with large Latina/o student populations at the secondary school level. Additionally, this research is occurring at a crucial time in our nation’s history, when the number of Latina/o students underperforming on college readiness measures portends impactful and lasting consequences to the future of the nation.

Understanding Kepler's Super-Earths and Sub-Neptunes
These evolution models are critical because a planet''s composition can change substantially over its lifetime. Close-in planets, like most of those found so far, are bombarded by large amounts of ionizing radiation, which over time can completely strip away a planet''s atmosphere; even turning a gas-rich Neptune sized planet into a barren rocky super-Earth.

The Political Economy of In-Kind Redistribution

release date: Jan 01, 2014
The Political Economy of In-Kind Redistribution
Why do politicians redistribute resources through in-kind rather than cash transfers? This paper examines political incentives for in-kind government redistribution. By analyzing the political game between office-motivated politicians and self-interested citizens, I first show that in economies with competitive markets in-kind transfers are not required. Politicians can win elections targeting groups of voters with differential cash transfers. However, in-kind transfers arise in the presence of externalities in consumption. In that case, targeting groups of voters with in-kind rather than cash transfers allows politicians to attract simultaneously voters in additional groups with the same amount of resources. Politicians undertake political redistribution depending on the expected electoral returns obtained from targeting both cash and in-kind transfers into different groups. Furthermore, electoral competition leads the economy to achieve Pareto efficient allocations that markets cannot reach. Politicians internalize the presence of external effects when competing for marginal voters who could swing their vote.

Distributive Politics and Economic Ideology

Distributive Politics and Economic Ideology
This paper presents a theoretical model to investigate the effect of heterogeneous ideological preferences over the public provision of goods on both the scope of government spending and the electoral competition among political parties. The proposed model points out that the presence of both ideological politicians who compete for office and electoral uncertainty generate a partisanship effect on economic policy. In particular, pro-market (right-wing) politicians commit to lower public provision of goods and income taxation schedules that implement larger income inequality than pro-government (left-wing) politicians. The model also predicts that the public funding of goods through income taxation confers an electoral advantage to pro-market ideological positions. In fact, pro-market politicians can court moderate pro-leftist voters by promises of higher net income that pro-government politicians are not willing to fund. As a result, a right-wing party exhibits larger chances of winning elections, and its policy proposal determines lower ideological sacrifice than for the left-wing party.

Federal Reserve's Framework for Monetary Policy

release date: Dec 12, 2013
Federal Reserve's Framework for Monetary Policy
The Federal Reserve has made substantial changes to its framework for monetary policymaking by providing greater clarity regarding its objectives, its intentions regarding the use of monetary policy in the pursuit of those objectives, and its broader policy strategy. These changes reflect both a response to changes in economists'' understanding of the most effective way to implement monetary policy and a response to specific challenges posed by the financial crisis and its aftermath. The authors trace the recent evolution of the Federal Reserve''s framework, and use a small-scale macro model and a simple static model to help illuminate the approaches taken with nontraditional monetary policy tools. Figures and tables. This is a print on demand report.

Models and Optimisation Methods for Interference Coordination in Self-organising Cellular Networks

Models and Optimisation Methods for Interference Coordination in Self-organising Cellular Networks
We are at that moment of network evolution when we have realised that our telecommunication systems should mimic features of human kind, e.g., the ability to understand the medium and take advantage of its changes. Looking towards the future, the mobile industry envisions the use of fully automatised cells able to self-organise all their parameters and procedures. A fully self-organised network is the one that is able to avoid human involvement and react to the fluctuations of network, traffic and channel through the automatic/autonomous nature of its functioning. Nowadays, the mobile community is far from this fully self-organised kind of network, but they are taken the first steps to achieve this target in the near future. This thesis hopes to contribute to the automatisation of cellular networks, providing models and tools to understand the behaviour of these networks, and algorithms and optimisation approaches to enhance their performance. This work focuses on the next generation of cellular networks, in more detail, in the DownLink (DL) of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) based networks. Within this type of cellular system, attention is paid to interference mitigation in self-organising macrocell scenarios and femtocell deployments. Moreover, this thesis investigates the interference issues that arise when these two cell types are jointly deployed, complementing each other in what is currently known as a two-tier network. This thesis also provides new practical approaches to the inter-cell interference problem in both macro cell and femtocell OFDMA systems as well as in two-tier networks by means of the design of a novel framework and the use of mathematical optimisation. Special attention is paid to the formulation of optimisation problems and the development of well-performing solving methods (accurate and fast).
