Spreading the Word! Spillover Effects of a Randomized Normative Informational Campaign on Residential Water Conservation

Spreading the Word! Spillover Effects of a Randomized Normative Informational Campaign on Residential Water Conservation
This paper reports the direct and spillover effects of a campaign with a normative based report on residential water use in Colombia. The experimental design introduces an exogenous variation in the percentage of households receiving reports within a water utility, leaving households without reports but affected by the diffusion of information. The randomization is at two levels. First, assigning saturation percentages across water utilities and second, the treatment status across households conditional to that saturation. Findings show that accounting for spillovers leads to a higher impact of social norm campaigns than previous interventions. In addition, shorter periods between reports remind households to act pro-environmentally. Households receiving feedback every 30 days show a significant impact than every 60 in both treatment units. This paper emphasizes using social norm-based as an effective tool in promoting socially desirable pro-environmental behaviors and addressing spillovers to diffuse behavioral changes. In particular, in small urban settings with high social capital levels or during weather shocks that could affect water supply.

Hysteresis Via Endogenous Rigidity in Wages and Participation

Hysteresis Via Endogenous Rigidity in Wages and Participation
We document that the past three ?jobless? recoveries also featured asymmetries in labor force participation and labor compensation, with each falling to new lows during each cycle. We model these asymmetries as resulting from a strategic complementarity in firms'' wage setting and workers'' job search strategies. Strategic complementarity results in a continuum of possible equilibria with higher-wage equilibria welfare dominating lower-wage equilibria. Assuming that no economic agent deviates from an existing strategy unless deviation is a unilateral best response, the model exhibits (1) periods of endogenous rigidity in wages and participation, (2) persistent changes in wages, participation, and output in response to transitory movements in labor productivity, (3) sluggish recoveries including both a ?jobless " phase, in which productivity recovers while unemployment remains elevated, and a ?wageless " phase, in which employment recovers but wages remain depressed Calibrating the model suggests that the U.S. unemployment rate may need to fall to around 3 percent before labor compensation recovers to pre-Financial Crisis levels.

Field Experiments (and the Lack of Thereof) for Testing Revenue Strategies in the Hospitality Industry

Field Experiments (and the Lack of Thereof) for Testing Revenue Strategies in the Hospitality Industry
This paper outlines opportunities that field experimentation can bring to accommodation managers. It also describes specific types of experiment designs that can help exploit those opportunities and increase the adoption of field experimentation. Field experimentation (often through randomized testing) has been widely adopted as an optimization technique in product design and marketing in several industries. It is also considered as the golden standard for causal inference and thus a critical tool for decision makers. As such, companies have successfully used field experimentation to reduce costs, increase revenues, and maintain an edge in their customer experience in highly competitive environments. However, a number of optimization problems with a rich academic and commercial history have resisted this push. In certain industries, such as hospitality, to the authors'' knowledge, there is little publicly documented work detailing results of field experiments applied to revenue management, and the use of such tools remains the privilege of big corporate brands with a small overall market share. This happens in a $500 billion industry in which vendors and academics alike claim that price optimization can yield uplifts of 10% in revenue. This paper discusses the likely causes of the sparse adoption of field experimentation for revenue management in hospitality. By explicitly addressing the complexities of revenue management, and outlining specific experimental designs aimed at handling those complexities, this paper aims to start a public conversation about experimentation in hospitality that should benefit the industry as a whole.

David Lopez a trente ans. Modeling land use sustainability in Fiji Islands

Modeling land use sustainability in Fiji Islands
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Environmental Sciences, Fiji National University (College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Fiji National University), language: English, abstract: Fiji Islands are among the most dynamic economies in the South Pacific, with rapid changes on infrastructure and industrial developments, tourism and commercial agriculture; even though they often come alongside environmental impacts on endemic biota and ecosystems that are not well understood, not much is invested on research to plan a sustainable use of land. Parallel unsolved concerns are land tenure issues in which ancestral community ownership coexists with modern markets; tensions over land leases between ethnical groups and high population growth trigger land use intensification, and rise of emigrations, of landlessness, of unemployment and finally of poverty. Therefore, it is of a national interest to asses these trends for long term sustainable land use planning; even nearly 3500 years ago a record of regulations aimed to achieve sustainability and equality: “3 ...for six years you may plant crops inyour fields, prune your vineyards, and gather what they produce. 4 But during the seventh year, you must let the land rest. 8 Count seven of these years seven times for a total of 49 years... during that time there will be seven ·years of rest 9 and proclaim liberty to everyone living in the land... everyone is to return to their own property” (Leviticus 25). In this document, the first chapter is a synopsis of land use in the rural areas of Fiji islands, its evolution, types, problems and alternatives, the second chapter is a review of some common free gis packages available in the internet useful for forestry and land use evaluations, their number and degrees of sophistication are ever growing; the last two chapters are applications, first on detecting the severity of land use intensity in relation to other socioeconomic parameters, and second on the planning of the best places for planting trees of economic or ecological importance. The articles were presented at international conferences, they are in no way a comprehensive treatise on the subject; my main purpose is to ignite the interest of students and staff working in the forestry field to try on and propose projects of various types, scales and complexity, with just a standard PC and access to internet and library resources.

The Federal Reserve's Framework for Monetary Policy - Recent Changes and New Questions

The Federal Reserve's Framework for Monetary Policy - Recent Changes and New Questions
In recent years, the Federal Reserve has made substantial changes to its framework for monetary policymaking by providing greater clarity regarding its objectives, its intentions regarding the use of monetary policy--including nontraditional policy tools such as forward guidance and asset purchases--in the pursuit of those objectives, and its broader policy strategy. These changes reflected both a response to changes in economists'' understanding of the most effective way to implement monetary policy and a response to specific challenges posed by the financial crisis and its aftermath, particularly the effective lower bound on nominal interest rates. We trace the recent evolution of the Federal Reserve''s framework, and use a small-scale macro model and a simple static model to help illuminate the approaches taken with nontraditional monetary policy tools. A number of foreign central banks have made similar innovations in response to similar developments. On balance, the Federal Reserve has moved closer to "flexible inflation targeting," but the Federal Reserve''s approach includes a balanced focus on two objectives and the use of a flexible horizon over which policy aims to foster those objectives. Going forward, further changes in central banks'' frameworks may be needed to address issues raised by the financial crisis. For example, some have suggested that the sustained period at the effective lower bound points to the need for central banks to establish a different policy objective, such as a higher inflation target or a nominal income target. We use our small-scale model of the U.S. economy to examine the potential benefits and costs of such changes. We also discuss the broad issue of how central banks should integrate financial stability policy and monetary policy.

The purpose of this critical multi-case qualitative study was to explore reciprocal connections between participants and other stakeholders established through the community-school partnerships (CSPs) at three Latina/o majority secondary schools in an economically disadvantaged region of Southwest Texas. To achieve its purpose the study examined the ways in which various campus and district level leaders demonstrated ownership of the CSPs, especially focusing on how the connections with parents and the community were established and maintained. Additionally, the study investigated the connection between the program perceptions of participating parents and other community members in relation to the school and district based perceptions of the programs’ outcomes. This type of research could lend key insights to educational leaders and practitioners working with large Latina/o student populations at the secondary school level. Additionally, this research is occurring at a crucial time in our nation’s history, when the number of Latina/o students underperforming on college readiness measures portends impactful and lasting consequences to the future of the nation.

Analysis and Application of Silicon Nano-particles Produced Via Continuous Flow Non-thermal Plasmas
Continuous flow non-thermal plasma reactors are being investigated for their ability to efficiently produce high quality nanoparticles. While many nanomaterials can be produced via continuous flow non-thermal plasma reactors, silicon is of particular interest, due to its abundance and relevance in many energy related fields. Significant gaps still exist in the understanding of the kinetics responsible for particle growth, structural evolution, and surface termination of continuous flow non-thermal plasma reactor produced particles. Particle interaction with plasma radicals results in the heating of the particles, which in turn affects the kinetics of particle growth, structural evolution, and surface termination during synthesis and processing. We have investigated the details of plasma-nanoparticle interaction by using in-flight and in-situ characterization techniques. For the first time, we have measured the temperature of a free-standing particle immersed in a non-equilibrium processing plasma.

These evolution models are critical because a planet''s composition can change substantially over its lifetime. Close-in planets, like most of those found so far, are bombarded by large amounts of ionizing radiation, which over time can completely strip away a planet''s atmosphere; even turning a gas-rich Neptune sized planet into a barren rocky super-Earth.
