Productivity and Export from a Marsh with a 15 M Tidal Range and the Effect of Impoundment of Selected Areas

Productivity and Export from a Marsh with a 15 M Tidal Range and the Effect of Impoundment of Selected Areas
In a salt marsh at the head of the Bay of Fundy, where the tidal range is 15 m, and the marsh is flooded only on highest tides, the above-ground annual production of Spartina alterniflora averaged 715 g m-2 dry weight, with a range of 324-1031g m-2. Puccinellia americana occupied the tops of the creek-side levees, and Spartina pectinata occupied the upland border where fresh water entered the marsh. The mean production for all species was 483 g m-2 yr-1 dry weight; this was lower than the production of marshes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Nova Scotia where the tidal range is about 2 m and the marshes are flooded on every tide. Export was monitored by comparing similar quadrats at different times of year. Major export was during the winter by ice rafting; there was little export in the summer. Impoundment of areas of about 20 ha to encourage duck breeding resulted in death of the salt marsh plants and elimination of the export by ice rafting.

Fast Neutron Effects on Transistor Scattering Parameters

Fast Neutron Effects on Transistor Scattering Parameters
"It has not been possible in the past to characterize a transistor or other semiconductor device with regard to its performance in a fast neutron (Eu003e10keV) environment when the device is operated at high (u003e100 MHz) frequencies. Using the scattering (s- ) parameter concept, which regards a device as a two-port "black box", a full characterization of the trends in the neutron bombarded high-frequency performance of a typical transistor can be made. Scattering parameters are not only an accurate means of describing the high-frequency performance of any device, but are now reasonably easily measured with the advent on the market of reliable, highly accurate s-parameter test sets. Methods which exist to permit the rapid design of high-frequency transistor circuits, once the device scattering parameters are known, are reviewed. The effects of neutron bombardment on a high-frequency transistor amplifier are found to be generally enhancing, rather than degrading as expected, if the device is operating near or above the published minimum f[subscript T]"--Abstract, leaf i.
