Launched Into Eternity

release date: Oct 11, 2017
Launched Into Eternity
When the crowd gathered to see the hangman launching teenager Robert Smith into eternity on a wet Tuesday in 1868, it was the last time this public spectacle would be witnessed in Scotland. Smith''s crime was heinous, his public punishment brutal. And, finally, it was the end of a tragic public theatre which had drawn eager, baying crowds for more than a thousand years. Launched Into Eternity is a fascinating account of crime and public punishment in Scotland. From bloody Viking penalties to the execution of William Wallace, and from witch hunts and public drownings to the horrific execution in 1820 of three Scots Radicals whose crime was to campaign for a fairer deal for the downtrodden, this is an astonishing and macabre story. But it is perhaps less surprising when you consider that by 1800, judges had the authority to hand out the death penalty for more than 200 separate offences. Times have undoubtedly changed for the better, but the shadows of our history offer a fascinating insight into the brutality of life and the public punishments of the past.

Primeval Forces

Primeval Forces
When one of our ancient forebears Little Lucy, died on the banks of an African river, to be preserved in its alluvial mud and discovered aeons later, did anyone mourn her passing? Did some hair-covered male hold her hand, perhaps shed a tear as she took her last breath, or did her group just wander off about their business, leaving her to die alone? Had she been a lover, a wife of one man only, who gave her love and loyalty and received it back in return? Or had she just been a child-bearer to many, a cog in the evolution of man? Whether Lucy ever knew a committed or loyal love, somewhere along our evolutionary path, it began and entrenched itself in our social behaviour. And with it came every couples eternal dilemma, the question to cheat or not to cheat, to follow our primitive instincts or our higher moral ideals.

Carstairs

release date: Oct 05, 2015
Carstairs
Carstairs, the State Hospital in Lanarkshire, Scotland, is a hospital like no other. Effectively a prison for some of the most violent and insane criminals in our society, it houses men who have committed the most horrific and frightening crimes imaginable. And despite being an expensive, taxpayer-funded facility, the workings of Carstairs remain subject to intense state secrecy. InCarstairs: Hospital for Horrors, author David Leslie examines the history of the institution, the crimes that have led patients to be committed to the State Hospital and highlights the risks of the brave and dedicated staff who work there. This shocking account delves into the nightmarish minds of men who have killed, raped and attacked family members, lovers, children and innocent bystanders. For many patients, there is little hope of ever being released. But for others, including some considered to be amongst the most dangerous in society, release can become a reality. Corsairs features an exclusive, first-hand account of a bloody escape in 1976, when Robert Mone, along with Thomas McCulloch, escaped and went on the run. Three men died and now, for the very first time, Robert Mone gives his own account of an event which shocked the nation. And it is a telling insight into one of the most high-profile yet secretive institutions there is.

Banged Up!

release date: Sep 30, 2014
Banged Up!
The wartime double agent with a transmitter in his cell to contact suffragettes; the doctor hanged as he smiled to the farewells of lovers on the scaffold; the con who defied a gangland godfather and escaped the bromide in the prison tea; aristocrats and arsonists...The screws who guard Britain''s prisons have seen them all. Stir! is the story of six of the country''s most notorious jails - Durham, Wandsworth, Pentonville, Wormwood Scrubs, Dartmoor and Holloway - and of the men and women who entered their gates, sometimes stood on their scaffolds and occasionally vanished before their time. The book looks at early punishments, life on hell ships transporting convicts to far-off continents, the growth of prison populations, inmates sentenced to waste away on treadmills, the underworld giant who was birched, children starved and beaten for stealing, and even women forced to eat. Also investigated are the lives and thoughts of scores of inmates, from Oscar Wilde to Oswald Mosley; from Dr Crippen to Ruth Ellis, the last woman hanged; from underworld legend Frankie Fraser to a Rolling Stone; and even the man who shot Martin Luther King, Jr.Just like Ronnie Barker''s Porridge series, there are laughs too, as we uncover the man who measured bathwater, the prisoners punished for not wearing a collar and tie, the jail bookie who paid out in bread, and the unlucky brewers. The mix is all there in Stir!

Lighting Candles

release date: May 15, 2014
Lighting Candles
When Manny McDonnell was twelve, he awoke to discover British troops surrounding his home in the toughest area of trouble-torn Belfast. Internment had begun and, encouraged by a fiercely Republican mother, he took to the streets with other school kids, throwing bricks, bottles and petrol bombs at soldiers. Jailed at fifteen for having IRA links, he became a unit commander leading deadly missions for the INLA before joining the IPLO, a group so vicious even the IRA ordered it to disband. But his decades of commitment to a free united Ireland turned to disillusion when bombs indiscriminately killed two little boys in mainland Britain. It was a wake-up call and, sickened by the way events were unfolding, McDonnell distanced himself from the Troubles and began to spend more time in Scotland with major gangland players Paul Ferris and Tam ''The Licensee'' McGraw. Friendly with both, he then faced difficult choices when the two fell out and became bitter rivals and sworn enemies. Lighting Candles is an astonishing and horrifying exposé of one man''s journey through the blood, bombs and bullets of the paramilitaries to the criminal activities of drug-smuggling gangsters. It is also a story of how, no matter what has gone before, it''s possible to put the past behind you and begin again.

Three Lions Versus the World

release date: May 21, 2010
Three Lions Versus the World
Since their first appearance in the competition in 1950, England''s World Cup story has been one of broken dreams, bad luck, shock losses, and penalty nightmares, with one shining exception in 1966, when they famously won the Cup after beating Germany 4-2. In Three Lions Versus the World, Mark Pougatch talks to those who have shaped England''s World Cup odyssey from Brazil 1950, when England lost to the amateurs of America, through the triumph of 1966 and the subsequent failure to retain the Cup in 1970 to the spirit-sapping quarter-final defeats in Japan 2002 and Germany 2006. Household names such as Sir Tom Finney, Don Howe, Martin Peters, Trevor Brooking, Gary Lineker, Tony Adams, Glenn Hoddle, and Danny Mills share their personal recollections of playing for England both on and off the pitch in the World Cup. Some reveal how they were affected by the demands placed upon them and by the mounting pressure of expectation from the English public. Others comment candidly on the myriad controversies to befall the England squad over the years. Massive highs are recounted and crushing lows painfully recollected, but all the contributors are united in the pride they shared in wearing the Three Lions shirt for their country in this most special of tournaments.

Climate Change, Impacts and Adaptation Scenarios
"This Technical Report is one of two foundation papers for the B.C. Ministry of Forest and Range (MoFR) Future Forest Ecosystems Initiative (FFEI). These papers will increase the awareness of the potential impact of climate change on forest and range resources in British Columbia. They will also provide information to aid in assessing the vulnerability of British Columbia''s forest and range resources and their management, leading to the development of adaptation strategies for a changing climate. The FFEI was initiated by the Chief Forester with a symposium and workshop in December 2005. At the same time the MoFR Climate Change Task Team was preparing a report on how the MoFR should strategically position itself with respect to the potential impacts of climate change on the province''s forest and range resources. The present report draws on the Task Team report, recommendations from the FFEI workshop, and numerous other documents including the most recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It provides a summary of future possible climates for British Columbia, a brief review of possible impacts on forest and range resources, and options for and challenges to adapting to climate change. Finally, there are recommendations on how the MoFR might respond to climate change. The report contains four appendices that expand on material presented in the body of the report, including information on the past as well as on future climates of British Columbia."--Document.
