The Rhetoric of Empiricism

release date: Jan 01, 1993
The Rhetoric of Empiricism
Empiricism favors the visual over the verbal, the literal over the rhetorical, the static over the temporal: This is the standard charge leveled by literary theorists and writers. It is, Jules David Law demonstrates, remarkably misguided. His ambitious and challenging book explores the interplay of language and visual perception at the heart of empiricism. A re-evaluation of the British empiricist tradition from the perspective of contemporary literary theory, it also offers a sustained challenge to theory itself. In failing to grasp the issues confronting early empiricist writers or to be fully aware of their rhetorical strategies, Law says, theory has defined itself needlessly in opposition to empiricism. -- Description from http://www.booktopia.com.au (April 19, 2012).

The Social Life of Fluids

release date: Jul 05, 2018
The Social Life of Fluids
British Victorians were obsessed with fluids—with their scarcity and with their omnipresence. By the mid-nineteenth century, hundreds of thousands of citizens regularly petitioned the government to provide running water and adequate sewerage, while scientists and journalists fretted over the circulation of bodily fluids. In The Social Life of Fluids Jules Law traces the fantasies of power and anxieties of identity precipitated by these developments as they found their way into the plotting and rhetoric of the Victorian novel. Analyzing the expression of scientific understanding and the technological manipulation of fluids—blood, breast milk, and water—in six Victorian novels (by Charles Dickens, George Eliot, George Moore, and Bram Stoker), Law traces the growing anxiety about fluids in Victorian culture from the beginning of the sanitarian movement in the 1830s through the 1890s. Fluids, he finds, came to be regarded as the most alienable aspect of an otherwise inalienable human body, and, paradoxically, as the least rational element of an increasingly rationalized environment. Drawing on literary and feminist theory, social history, and the history of science and medicine, Law shows how fluids came to be represented as prosthetic extensions of identity, exposing them to contested claims of kinship and community and linking them inextricably to public spaces and public debates.

A Phantasmagorical Machine

release date: May 28, 2023
A Phantasmagorical Machine
Los Angeles in the 1970s, with all its lazy pleasures and dreams, its crimes spoken and unspoken ... a family of entertainment professionals who create, and embody, the images the industry demands ... and the search for meaning and connection in a world of performance, desire and heartbreak. It''s 1978, and a lonely teenage boy named Harris wanders the San Fernando Valley streets. After a traumatic assault, he''s searching for meaning and purpose in the cars of men who pick him up at strip mall parking lots. When one of his rides asks if he''d like to be photographed, he discovers a newfound sense of power and control by appearing in low-budget gay porn loops. Meanwhile, across town, the well-respected actress Eva Loesch is also wandering. An ingenue in the 1950s, comedienne in the 60s, she''s now reduced to instant coffee commercials - until she gets a chance to join the hit TV series Bowman. With her star on the rise, she''s able to exert her own power and control, especially over her grown daughter and two grandchildren - one of whom, Harris, has become involved in some extracurricular activities she''s not entirely sure of. As she warns the family that her reputation as television''s first woman DA can''t risk being tarnished, Harris has found his own underground reputation, as scruffy, raunchy "Kevin," the embodiment of a laconic southern California attitude that''s suddenly, wildly in demand. But the forces that shape their destinies turn out to be more treacherous than either of them imagines. As their careers intertwine -- and Harris loses control of his own -- their dueling ambitions threaten to bring down the carefully constructed lives, and images, they both worked so hard to create. Equal parts rueful humor and human heartbreak, A Phantasmagorical Machine is the story of a family of survivors and performers, the city that made them, and an exploration of sexuality and identity. One day, years after the unresolved events of his youth, Harris opens a magazine to discover his own obituary - and at last, the crimes and mysteries of the past reveal themselves, and the search for who died in a lonely desert trailer brings the whole family together - with its eccentric and outrageous circle of friends, lovers and assorted hangers-on - to finally reckon with the meaning of love, attachment, kindness and forgiving.

Perspectives on the Internationalisation of Higher Education

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Perspectives on the Internationalisation of Higher Education
"Internationalisation of the contemporary university has become a pervasive and powerful development theme during the past three decades. In many countries, higher education is now a major export industry. The UK has longstanding experience of overseas student recruitment, international partnerships between universities and trans-national education. It has led the world in the development of the quality assurance of overseas activities. This collection of essays brings together articles published in the journal of the UK Association of University Administrators (AUA). Several of the pieces are members of AUA whilst others are by authors who work in other countries. Overall, in this volume, there is a practitioner focus that provides the reader with lessons learnt by those with experience of implementing policies to promote the internationalisation of higher education. We are interested both in how universities can manage the challenges that they face, and in how the experience of students can be enhanced by participation in internationalisation.Because the AUA has an enduring commitment to the professionalization of management and administration, readers of this anthology will find accessible, focussed and brief articles that are solution-oriented. This book was originally published as a special issue of Perspectives: Policy and Practise in Higher Education."--Provided by publisher.

GEO-SEQ Best Practices Manual. Geologic Carbon Dioxide Sequestration

release date: Jan 01, 2004
GEO-SEQ Best Practices Manual. Geologic Carbon Dioxide Sequestration
The first phase of the GEO-SEQ project was a multidisciplinary effort focused on investigating ways to lower the cost and risk of geologic carbon sequestration. Through our research in the GEO-SEQ project, we have produced results that may be of interest to the wider geologic carbon sequestration community. However, much of the knowledge developed in GEO-SEQ is not easily accessible because it is dispersed in the peer-reviewed literature and conference proceedings in individual papers on specific topics. The purpose of this report is to present key GEO-SEQ findings relevant to the practical implementation of geologic carbon sequestration in the form of a Best Practices Manual. Because our work in GEO-SEQ focused on the characterization and project development aspects, the scope of this report covers practices prior to injection, referred to as the design phase. The design phase encompasses activities such as selecting sites for which enhanced recovery may be possible, evaluating CO{sub 2} capacity and sequestration feasibility, and designing and evaluating monitoring approaches. Through this Best Practices Manual, we have endeavored to place our GEO-SEQ findings in a practical context and format that will be useful to readers interested in project implementation. The overall objective of this Manual is to facilitate putting the findings of the GEO-SEQ project into practice.

Trade, Diaspora and Migration to New Zealand

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Trade, Diaspora and Migration to New Zealand
This paper examines the hypotheses that a greater stock of migrants in New Zealand from a particular country leads to more trade between that country and New Zealand, and a greater stock of New Zealanders living overseas in a particular country leads to more trade between that country and New Zealand. It also examines the relationships between migration, diaspora and tourism exports. The literature suggests that migrants can stimulate trade by lowering transaction costs, and by bringing with them preferences for goods produced in their home country. Our approach is to apply panel data techniques, within the framework of a standard gravity model of trade, to a dataset consisting of information on 233 countries in each of the 26#years between 1981 and 2006. We estimate a random effects panel sample selection model using correlated random effects. Our results indicate that migration does indeed stimulate trade. In our benchmark specification, merchandise exports from and imports to New Zealand both have a statistically significant relationship with numbers of migrants in New Zealand; imports also have a statistically significant relationship with numbers of New Zealanders overseas. Our results also suggest that migration stimulates imports more than exports.

Skewness as an Explanation of Gambling in Cumulative Prospect Theory

Skewness as an Explanation of Gambling in Cumulative Prospect Theory
Abstract: Skewness of return has been suggested as a reason why agents might choose to gamble, ceteris paribus, in Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT). We investigate the relationship between moments of return in two models where agents choices over uncertain outcomes are determined as in CPT. We illustrate via examples that in CPT theory, as with expected utility theory, propositions that agents have a preference for skewness may be invalid
