Good
This is the story of the incredible journey of David Good, the son of an American anthropologist father, and indigenous Yanomami mother who calls the Amazon rainforest her home. Overlapping the story of what David''s mother''s early years were like being raised in the rainforest, the book follows David from childhood to adulthood as he searches for identity, love, acceptance, and the one thing truly missing from his life, his mother. Growing up in a predominantly white population of the US without a mother or a deeper connection to his South American roots, David struggles with issues of identity and relationships. His and his mother''s stories intertwine in a heartbreakingly beautiful climax when they are reunited in the jungle. Beautifully illustrated and co-authored by award winning artist and storyteller, FLuX, Good is a vivid and breathtaking visualization of a highly unusual life''s journey.

Eu, yanomami

release date: Jun 19, 2023
Eu, yanomami

On the Collapse of Historical Civilizations

release date: Jan 01, 2020
On the Collapse of Historical Civilizations
To explain the collapse of historical civilizations, scholars typically point to suboptimal behaviors including misunderstanding the natural environment, shortsightedness, or a lack of institutions. We examine the collapse of four historical societies with a model of endogenous population growth and renewable resources employing components of optimal resource management, economic growth theory, and the moral philosophy of social welfare function choice. We find that these collapses may have been socially optimal. Further, we show that the transient behavior of the system is more sensitive to assumptions than the equilibrium behavior and that focusing solely on equilibria may miss key insights.

The Way Around

release date: Nov 03, 2015
The Way Around
Rooted in two vastly different cultures, a young man struggles to understand himself, find his place in the world, and reconnect with his mother—and her remote tribe in the deepest jungles of the Amazon rainforest—in this powerful memoir that combines adventure, history, and anthropology. “My Yanomami family called me by name. Anyopo-we. What it means, I soon learned, is ‘long way around’: I’d taken the long way around obstacles to be here among my people, back where I started. A twenty-year detour.” For much of his young life, David Good was torn between two vastly different worlds. The son of an American anthropologist and a tribeswoman from a distant part of the Amazon, it took him twenty years to embrace his identity, reunite with the mother who left him when he was six, and claim his heritage. The Way Around is Good’s amazing chronicle of self-discovery. Moving from the wilds of the Amazonian jungle to the paved confines of suburban New Jersey and back, it is the story of his parents, his American scientist-father and his mother who could not fully adapt to the Western lifestyle. Good writes sympathetically about his mother’s abandonment and the deleterious effect it had on his young self; of his rebellious teenage years marked by depression and drinking, and the near-fatal car accident that transformed him and gave him purpose to find a way back to his mother. A compelling tale of recovery and discovery, The Way Around is a poignant, fascinating exploration of what family really means, and the way that the strongest bonds endure, even across decades and worlds.

The Man Code
With The Man Code, Bachelor Pad winner and Bachelorette fan favorite David Good empowers women by helping them decipher the unspoken rules that govern masculinity. In his book, Good explains the difference between a Man Code man and a bad boy. He reveals what men like him value, and lists the stumbling blocks they most often experience on the road to love. He also details why he feels the Man Code is a precious set of values increasingly absent from our society. Manliness, he writes, is at a crossroads in our culture.

In Defense of Art and Aesthetics in the Era of Ceaseless Change

In Defense of Art and Aesthetics in the Era of Ceaseless Change
In this thesis, I will analyze the four novels and one full-length essay in a work-by-work style in order to emphasize the diversity of Tanizaki''s complex treatment of art and aesthetics. Although many of Tanizaki''s novels have overarching themes, each book addresses the role of art and aesthetics in a unique and effective way, and deserves and in-depth, piece-by-piece exploration. The order in which I have chosen to analyze these works is intended to introduce important key concepts, such a s the varying levels of analysis of Tanizaki works (psychological, sexual, allegorical), at an early stage and then build upon those themes. Without "In Praise of Shadows" and "Manji" at the beginning, a further exploration of Tanizaki''s non-mimetic modes of writing would be difficult, and without the three prior novels, an explanation of "The Makioka Sisters" as aberrant in contrast to Tanizaki''s other works would be impossible. The two middle pieces, "Naomi" and "Some Prefer Nettles" rely on similar themes of breaking with preexisting literary genres, and therefore are near each other in the essay. Finally, I will return to one of "In Praise of Shadows''" most enduring themes, shadows, and show how one final use of Tanizaki''s complex sentiments on art and aesthetics grants even further meaning to each text visited in this thesis.
