For Valerie

release date: May 15, 2025
For Valerie
In June 2019, Valerie French Kilroy was brutally murdered by her husband at their home near Westport, while her three young sons lay in bed. For her brother David and the rest of her family, it was the beginning of a battle against a system unprepared to protect the three innocent children whose father remains their legal guardian, despite being convicted of their mother''s murder. From the devastating shock of hearing of his sister''s death to the multiple criminal trials before the guilty verdict was delivered, David describes the issues his family faced in the aftermath of Valerie''s murder. He provides a deeply personal insight into Valerie''s marriage and the hidden struggles she faced in the run-up to her murder. This book is both a heartfelt tribute to Valerie''s life and legacy and an urgent call to rethink the way our society responds to domestic homicide.

Shapes of Things

release date: Apr 07, 2024
Shapes of Things
Shapes of Things contains a series of interviews with bassist and producer Paul Samwell-Smith discussing the first decade of his career. Paul got his start in the pioneering 1960s band the Yardbirds, working alongside guitarists Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. He led the group''s musical evolution during the group''s peak years, moving from hard-hitting covers of American blues and R''n''B songs to a string of influential Top Ten singles, including "For Your Love," "Heart Full of Soul," "Evil Hearted You/Still I''m Sad," "Shapes of Things," and "Over, Under, Sideways, Down." After leaving the Yardbirds in 1966 (Jimmy Page was his replacement), Paul became a highly successful producer, especially known for his work with Cat Stevens/Yusuf and Carly Simon. In these interviews, Paul talks about life as a pop star at the height of Beatlemania, learning the ropes and coming into his own as a producer, and the personal crises that twice forced him to step back from the rock''n''roll life. Along the way, he provides an intimate look at recording the Yardbirds, Yusuf, and Carly Simon, as well as encounters with artists from Jimmy Reed and Sonny Boy Williamson II, to Cyril Davies, the Beatles, Peter and Gordon, Jackie DeShannon, the Rolling Stones, Murry Head, Paul Simon, and more.

Inorganic Geochemistry of Coal

release date: Jun 22, 2023
Inorganic Geochemistry of Coal
Inorganic Geochemistry of Coal explains how to determine the concentrations and modes of occurrence of elements in coal, how to diminish adverse effects of toxic elements on the environment and human health, which elements in coal could be industrially utilized, and which elements can be successfully used as indications for deciphering depositional environments and tectonic evolution. As coal use will remain at an all-time high for the next several decades, there is a critical need for understanding the properties of this fuel to ensure efficient use, encourage its economic by-product potential, and to help minimize its negative technological, environmental and health impacts. - Features dozens of never-before published illustrations of critical features of the inorganic geochemistry of coal - Covers both the theory and applications of the topic, including case studies to serve as real-world examples - Includes a chapter on the health and environmental impacts of the mining, development and use of coal

Divided We Fall

release date: Sep 22, 2020
Divided We Fall
David French warns of the potential dangers to the country—and the world—if we don’t summon the courage to reconcile our political differences. Two decades into the 21st Century, the U.S. is less united than at any time in our history since the Civil War. We are more diverse in our beliefs and culture than ever before. But red and blue states, secular and religious groups, liberal and conservative idealists, and Republican and Democratic representatives all have one thing in common: each believes their distinct cultures and liberties are being threatened by an escalating violent opposition. This polarized tribalism, espoused by the loudest, angriest fringe extremists on both the left and the right, dismisses dialogue as appeasement; if left unchecked, it could very well lead to secession. An engaging mix of cutting edge research and fair-minded analysis, Divided We Fall is an unblinking look at the true dimensions and dangers of this widening ideological gap, and what could happen if we don''t take steps toward bridging it. French reveals chilling, plausible scenarios of how the United States could fracture into regions that will not only weaken the country but destabilize the world. But our future is not written in stone. By implementing James Madison’s vision of pluralism—that all people have the right to form communities representing their personal values—we can prevent oppressive factions from seizing absolute power and instead maintain everyone’s beliefs and identities across all fifty states. Reestablishing national unity will require the bravery to commit ourselves to embracing qualities of kindness, decency, and grace towards those we disagree with ideologically. French calls on all of us to demonstrate true tolerance so we can heal the American divide. If we want to remain united, we must learn to stand together again.

Heart Full of Soul

release date: May 29, 2020
Heart Full of Soul
This is the first full-length biography of Keith Relf, frontman for the Yardbirds and one of the great tragic characters in rock history. Keith''s moody vocals and harmonica helped to define the Yardbirds'' sound on a string of innovative hit records in the 1960s that influenced garage rock, psychedelia, blues rock, hard rock and heavy metal. Numerous books have been written about the Yardbirds'' famous guitarists--Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page--yet Keith has remained a mysterious and elusive figure since his death by electrocution at age 33. A deeply private person, prone to depression and poor health, Keith was ill-suited to the life of a rock star. In the years following the Yardbirds'' breakup, as the band''s guitarists became household names playing blues-based rock, Keith insisted on pursuing new musical paths, always searching for something new and trying to extend the Yardbirds'' spirit of curiosity and innovation. By the time of his death in 1976, Keith was nearly forgotten and struggling physically, emotionally and financially. More than forty years after his tragic death, this important artist''s story has finally been written and his contributions celebrated as more than just a footnote to the careers of his better-known bandmates.

Critical Approaches to Digital Video Composition and Media Literacy in Preservice Teacher and High School Contexts

release date: Jan 01, 2020
Critical Approaches to Digital Video Composition and Media Literacy in Preservice Teacher and High School Contexts
The first of the following manuscripts explores graduate-level preservice teachers'' responses to a critical digital video project in the context of a Disciplinary Literacies course. This study was particularly interested in the preservice teachers'' obstacles and collaborations they experienced while completing the project, as well as future applications they envisioned for the project in their own classrooms. Findings reveal common obstacles that many preservice teachers experienced throughout the composition process as well as key differences that contributed to some having a more favorable experience with the project than others. The study also identifies insights preservice teachers gained from the critical aspect of the project. The manuscript concludes with considerations of how their respective disciplines impacted the preservice teachers'' experiences with the project, how the instructional approach to implementing the project could be modified, why the project is relevant in a Disciplinary Literacies context, and why critical digital literacies are imperative in K-12 contexts. The second manuscript employs a similar approach to the methods and content of the first manuscript, studying high school students'' responses to the same critical digital video project in the context of a Media Literacy course. This study was also interested in the obstacles students experienced while completing the project as well as its applications, though their applications were strictly from a student''s perspective rather than a preservice teacher''s applications for a future classroom. The study also sought to understand whether the project impacted students'' stances toward contemporary issues. Findings reveal that some obstacles were necessary to facilitate student learning, while others hindered the learning process; applications for the project were mostly confined to the classroom; and responses to the critical aspect of the project varied. The manuscript concludes with arguments for mitigating hindrances to students'' access to participatory cultures in the K-12 classroom and increasing opportunities for critical interrogation through multimodal composition. The final manuscript studies the same high school Media Literacy students from the second manuscript, this time for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of their media literacy and critical media literacy development through the lens of their experiences in the course. Field notes and 28 students'' responses to course assignments, questionnaires, and interviews throughout the semester comprised the data set. Most students experienced slight progress in their engagement with media literacy and critical media literacy concepts, some experienced substantial progress, and others'' engagement was either unclear or ideologically concerning. Findings shed light on how courses like this can facilitate students'' development of media literacy and critical media literacy and also show promise for integrating similar courses into the K-12 curriculum more broadly.

The Regulation of Brain Pro-inflammatory Cytokines

release date: Jan 01, 2020
The Regulation of Brain Pro-inflammatory Cytokines
The dysregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines as a result of stress exposure has become widely implicated in the complex etiology of depression. Patients with depression have been shown to have elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines both in plasma and cerebral spinal fluid. During times of stress pro-inflammatory cytokines are primarily regulated by glucocorticoids and catecholamines that work in opposition to one another to inhibit (glucocorticoid receptor) or stimulate (beta-adrenergic receptor) pro-inflammatory cytokine production. While chronic stress can lead to heightened levels of both glucocorticoids and catecholamines, it is not known how the dysregulation of these systems affect the regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This dissertation focused its work through three aims. Aim 1 explored norepinephrine''s regulation of microglial pro-inflammatory cytokines. Aim 2 examined sex differences in the regulation of brain IL-1 beta by glucocorticoids and catecholamines following chronic stress. Finally, aim 3 sought to uncover glucocorticoids effect on norepinephrine turnover. Together, these aims help to better understand how chronic stress alters the regulation of brain pro-inflammatory cytokines with implications for depression.

Fighting EOKA

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Fighting EOKA
Drawing upon a wide range of unpublished sources, including files from the recently-released Foreign and Commonwealth Office ''migrated archive'', Fighting EOKA is the first full account of the operations of the British security forces on Cyprus in the second half of the 1950s. It shows how between 1955 and 1959 these forces tried to defeat the Greek Cypriot paramilitary organisation, EOKA, which was fighting to bring about enosis, that is the union between Cyprus and Greece. By tracing the evolving pattern of EOKA violence and the responses of the police, the British army, the civil administration on the island, and the minority Turkish Cypriot community, David French explains why the British could contain the military threat posed by EOKA, but could not eliminate it. The result was that by the spring of 1959 a political stalemate had descended upon Cyprus, and none of the contending parties had achieved their full objectives. Greek Cypriots had to be content with independence rather than enosis. Turkish Cypriots, who had hoped to see the island partitioned on ethnic lines, were given only a share of power in the government of the new Republic, and the British, who had hoped to retain sovereignty over the whole of the island, were left in control of just two military enclaves.

Rise of ISIS

release date: Sep 15, 2014
Rise of ISIS
THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ON ISIS Jay Sekulow, one of America’s most influential attorneys, closely examines the rise of the terrorist groups ISIS and Hamas, explains their objectives and capabilities and how, if left undefeated, their existence could unleash a genocide of historic proportions. Recently, the world has been shaken by gruesome photos and videos that have introduced us to the now infamous terrorist group known as ISIS. The world’s wealthiest and most powerful jihadists, ISIS originated within Al Qaeda with the goal of creating an Islamic state across Iraq and Syria and unrelenting jihad on Christians. Separate from ISIS, the terrorist group Hamas has waged an equally brutal war against Israel. Both groups, if left undefeated, have the potential to unleash a catastrophic genocide. Rise of ISIS gives a better understanding of the modern face of terror, andprovides an overview of the laws of war and war crimes. These laws differentiate between the guilty and innocent, and explain why the US military and the Israeli Defense Forces are often limited in their defensive measures. The authors’ firsthand experience, including multiple appearances before the Office of the Prosecutor, International Criminal Court at The Hague, along with direct contact battling jihadists during operation Iraqi Freedom lends insight into this important geopolitical issue. A must-have for anyone who wants to better understand the conflict that exists in the middle east, this well-researched and fully annotated volume is invaluable in revealing how this new brand of terrorism poses a very real threat to Americans and the world at large. It also serves as a guide to what we as individuals—and as a nation—can do to stop this escalating violence, prevent jihad, and protect Israel and America from this imminent threat.

The British Way in Warfare 1688 - 2000 (Routledge Revivals)

release date: Jul 17, 2014
The British Way in Warfare 1688 - 2000 (Routledge Revivals)
First published in 1990, this title examines British defence policy from 1688 onwards; the year in which Britain was successfully invaded for the final time, and which marked a generation of warfare that lasted until 1714, during which Britain came to be known as a major European power. David French considers the strategic alliances that formed and changed throughout the period, and tests his hypotheses in light of the varying paradigms of war, and British wartime and peacetime practices. The ways in which the needs of both the army and the navy have been balanced over time are analysed, with particular attention paid to how parliament allotted money and resources to each. Wars under discussion include the American War of Independence, and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. A detailed and critical title, this reissue will be of great value to history students studying Early Modern diplomacy, with a particular emphasis on the strategic development of British warfare and policy, and the place of Britain within the European power structure.

The British Way in Counter-Insurgency, 1945-1967

release date: Sep 29, 2011
The British Way in Counter-Insurgency, 1945-1967
The claim by the Ministry of Defence in 2001 that ''the experience of numerous small wars has provided the British Army with a unique insight into this demanding form of conflict'' unravelled spectacularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. One important reason for that, David French suggests, was because contemporary British counter-insurgency doctrine was based upon a serious misreading of the past. Until now, many observers believed that during the wars of decolonisation in the two decades after 1945, the British had discovered how western liberal notions of right and wrong could be made compatible with the imperatives of waging war amongst the people, that force could be used effectively but with care, and that a more just and prosperous society could emerge from these struggles. By using only the minimum necessary force, and doing so with the utmost discrimination, the British were able to win by securing the ''hearts and minds'' of the people. But this was a serious distortion of actual British practice on the ground. David French''s main contention is that the British hid their use of naked force behind a carefully constructed veneer of legality. In reality, they commonly used wholesale coercion, including cordon and search operations, mass detention without trial, forcible population resettlement, and the creation of free-fire zones to intimidate and lock-down the civilian population. The British waged their counter-insurgency campaigns by being nasty, not nice, to the people. The British Way in Counter-Insurgency is a seminal reassessment of the historical foundation of British counter doctrine and practice.

Home and Away

release date: Jul 01, 2011
Home and Away
David French, potential independent candidate for the 2016 presidential election, and his wife Nancy deliver a powerful story of what happens when a person--or rather, a family--answers the call to serve their nation. David French picked up the newspaper in the comfort of his penthouse in Philadelphia, and read about a soldier - father of two - who was wounded in Iraq. Immediately, he was stricken with a question: Why him and not me? David was a 37-year-old father of two, a Harvard Law graduate and president of a free speech organization. In other words, he was used to pushing pencils, not toting M16s. His wife Nancy was raising two children and writing from home. She was worrying about field trips and playdates, not about her husband going to war. HOME AND AWAY chronicles not just a soldier at war, but a family at war - a husband in Iraq, a wife and children at home, greeting each day with hope and fear, facing the challenge with determination, tears, and more than a little joy.

You Can't Trust Your Own Mind

release date: Dec 28, 2010
You Can't Trust Your Own Mind
In the cycles of the great season of creativity, we are sometimes given a rare and precious gift. This season, that gift is You Can''t Trust Your Own Mind, by David French PhD., a book about how to excavate your deep, true identity and stop the fear and alienation automatically and reactively imposed by the mind. Inspired by discipline, experience, understanding, and compassion, his words embrace a deeper truth with the reader and lead to common ground where we can all see what is real and what is not: “myself and the machine”, “your self and the machine”. With his self-disclosing style, he shows us how to find emotional shelter when we are injured: how to be truthful when we want to lie; how to build trust when we feel alone, and misunderstood. He helps us discover triggers that alarm the machine and cause swift destructive actions. He finds the power concealed within our own vulnerability, and gives us the courage to own our own pain. He gives us tools for more satisfying relationships, hope for self fulfillment, and permission to be who we are without games, fears, and self-sabotaging rituals of the ancient reactive “machine”. He shows each of us how to accept the “machine” that vigilantly and perpetually serves us with a singular directive: to monitor, protect, and destroy all perceived threats, before the deep sacred self is even aware of them. What others are saying about this book: Through Dr. French''s Personal balance Therapy, he brings together all the parts of what makes each one of us unique, and sets the reader on the path of wholeness. - D.C. Hadden, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist This book can save ones sanity, relationships, maybe even one''s life. Patients of mine commonly arrive in a state of despair and depression, losing all hope, faith, trust and love. Readers may be skeptical to try yet another book top better understand the hurt within, but believe this book will open one''s eyes and direct one to experiencing inner piece. To be able to see the pasterns of our actions that lead us to heartache and frustration is eye opening and allows the reader to understand the “automatic self”. Dr. French teaches that by modifying and reeducating the “Machine” that allows us to achieve a balance with our “real self.”The descriptions were right on target. The reader will find this book encouraging, even those that may feel that they are too far gone to be helped .many readers will find themselves, turning back to this book again and again when they are in need of a “reality check.”They will find healing in the pages within. - James S. Pratty, M.D. Psychiatrist Medical Director, Azimuth Mental Health Associates What I love about Dr. French and his book is how real. This book is great for all health workers, educators, rehabilitation staff and individuals addressing their own issues. His spirituality and sensitivity is great. - Richard L Rosenberg, PhD. Lead vocational coordinator, Whittier Union High School District.

Little Book Of Cynics

Little Book Of Cynics
Cynics are as old as Man himself. Ancient sources tell of Adam who, when seeing Eve for the first time, muttered, "e;Uh-oh. There goes Free Will."e; If Adam was indeed the father of the human race - and, as such, the progenitor of cynicism - is it any surprise his children are just like him? Nowadays, the word ''cynic'' has been relegated to a synonym of ''doubter'', ''pessimist'' or ''sceptic''. But, given our modern preoccupations with pleasure, fame, fortune and power, maybe we need cynics more than ever. Perhaps theirs is that small, sane voice amid the roar of instant gratification, 24-hour television, media manipulation and marketing. Or perhaps we just wanted to sell a book. But, of course - we''re not that cynical. Are we?
