Cette aventure qui se lit comme un roman, c’est de l’histoire vraie, l’histoire de la campagne de Libye de 1940 à 1942, mais vue sous un aspect très particulier, celui des opérations de camouflage et d’intoxication militaire qui l’ont accompagnée. Le héros de l’ouvrage a existé. C’était un magicien fort connu de Londres, un certain Jasper Maskelyne, dont le père et le grand-père avaient été de célèbres illusionnistes. Jasper a l’ambition de faire mieux qu’eux, et la guerre va lui fournir l’occasion de montrer ses talents. Après bien des difficultés, il finit par se faire accepter dans l’armée. Son but est de mettre son imagination et sa technique au service de son pays et — ainsi qu’il le dit — de mobiliser le monde de la magie contre Hitler. Envoyé à l’Ecole de camouflage, il commence par stupéfier Lord Gort, Inspecteur général de l’armée britannique, en lui faisant apparaître en pleine campagne anglaise l’image d’un cuirassé allemand voguant sur la Tamise. Expédié ensuite en Afrique du Nord, il arrive au Caire en avril 1941, au moment où l’offensive du général Rommel — le Renard du Désert — menace de chasser les Anglais d’Egypte. Afin de tromper l’ennemi sur les mouvements des chars de combat, il est demandé à Maskelyne de les camoufler en camions. Aidé d’une petite équipe pittoresque, la « Bande magique », il s’acquitte si bien de cette tâche que l’armée lui confie la création et la direction d’un complexe industriel où vont être fabriqués en masse et secrètement des chars et des canons en toile et carton, ainsi que des soldats factices, destinés à leurrer l’adversaire. Tout en montant des spectacles d’illusionnisme pour la distraction des troupes engagées dans cette campagne, Maskelyne accomplit des exploits étonnants. Il crée un faux port d’Alexandrie, que les Allemands vont bombarder à la place du vrai. Il fait disparaître le canal de Suez grâce à des artifices lumineux. Il fabrique de faux navires de guerre, camoufle des vedettes lance-torpilles, protège l’île de Malte contre les raids aériens, et invente une foule de stratagèmes dont le dernier, le plus remarquable, apporte à la Huitième Armée de Montgomery une aide déterminante dans la bataille d’El Alamein qui vit la victoire britannique et mit fin à la « guerre du désert ». Outre les faits historiques, mais peu connus, qu’il dévoile, l’ouvrage est rempli de notations amusantes, d’études de caractères des chefs d’armée et des combattants, et le tout est assaisonné d’un mélange typiquement anglais de sentimentalisme discret et d’humour incisif.

Maskenlose holographische Lithographiesysteme nutzen die Möglichkeiten der gezielten Lichtformung in Phase und Amplitude durch Holographie, die für die Projektion zwei- und dreidimensionaler Muster genutzt werden kann. Das Ziel ist die strukturierte Belichtung von Fotoresist, wodurch das Einbringen von Strukturen in den Resist ermöglicht wird. Die computergenerierten Hologramme (CGH) werden dabei mittels Algorithmen berechnet und auf einem räumlichen Lichtmodulator (SLM) dargestellt. In dieser Arbeit wird ein solches System entwickelt, bestehend aus geeigneten Algorithmen zur Hologrammberechnung, einem Lichtmodulator zur Darstellung der Hologramme, einem optischen Projektionssystem mit Laser als Lichtquelle, sowie einem Positionierungssystem für zu belichtende Fotoresists auf Substraten. Durch gezielte Optimierung der Parameter der Berechnungs- und Darstellungsmethoden sowie des optischen Projektionssystems werden Muster projiziert, welche ein Einbringen von mikrometergroßen Strukturen in Fotoresist ermöglichen. Das Erreichen guter Uniformität der Intensität der projizierten Muster ist bei holographischer Projektion eine besondere Herausforderung, da durch die Kohärenz der Lichtquelle in Verbindung mit der Hologrammberechnungsmethodik üblicherweise ein Specklekontrast entsteht, der ein Intensitätsrauschen verursacht. Da in der Mikrolithographie die Schärfentiefe üblicherweise stark begrenzt ist, sind bei Projektion auf unebenen Substraten Teile des Musters an der Substratoberfläche nicht im Fokus, somit werden verschwommene Strukturen in den Fotoresist einbelichtet. Um dies zu korrigieren, werden eine Oberflächenvermessung des zu strukturierenden Gebiets sowie eine abschnittsweise Refokussierung mittels Anpassung der Hologrammberechnung umgesetzt. Sowohl die Messung als auch die angepasste Belichtung werden parallelisiert in dem zu strukturierenden Feld durchgeführt. Für ersteres wird ein geeignetes Muster durch den Lichtmodulator projiziert, welches eine ortsaufgelöste Bestimmung der Oberflächenpositionen ermöglicht. Für letzteres werden Kurzdistanzpropagationsschritte in die Hologrammberechnung integriert, um eine gleichzeitige Projektion in mehrere Tiefenebenen zu ermöglichen. Zuletzt zeigen Belichtungstests die Leistungsfähigkeit des Systems.

Molecular oxygen is observed to adsorb on 0.2 - 0.6 ML Au/Ni(111) surface alloys. Molecular oxygen adsorbates are characterized by their 0-0 stretching frequencies of 740 cm', 851 cm' and 962 cm', as measured by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The concentrations and frequencies of these species are determined as a function of Au coverage. The concentrations and frequencies of dissociatively chemisorbed molecular oxygen below 0.3 ML Au are measured using HREELS. A Monte Carlo simulation was developed to determine possible binding sites for the molecular and atomic oxygen adsorbates, but no reasonable geometric model was able to match the experimental data. The trends in concentration and frequency of the molecular oxygen adsorbates are caused by the downward shift of the Ni d band as Au is alloyed into the surface and the corresponding reduction in charge transfer from the metal surface to the antibonding orbitals of 02. Adsorbed molecular oxygen dissociates between 110 and 150 K into unreactive atomic oxygen. At Au coverage above 0.5 ML, the surface is observed to undergo a reconstruction at 300 K, leading to a new molecularly adsorbed oxygen species with a vibrational frequency of 1050 cm1. The total amount of oxygen adsorbed on the surface is quantified using Auger electron spectroscopy. An accurate algorithm for determining the Au coverage of Au/Ni(111) surface alloys using Auger electron spectroscopy is described. Carbon monoxide is catalyically oxidized on the Au/Ni(1 11) alloy surface at 85 K. Molecularly adsorbed 02 species with vibrational frequencies of 851 cm' and 962 cm- 1 are identified as the reactants. At 115 K, CO reacts with the remaining molecular oxygen species with a vibrational frequency of 741 cm-'. The molecularly adsorbed oxygen stabilized on the reconstructed surface is also capable of reaction with CO at 85 K. The ability of Au/Ni(1 11) alloys to catalyze repeated oxidation reactions is demonstated, suggesting that Au/Ni(1 11) alloys may be a practical and effective catalyst for oxidizing CO to CO 2 at cryogenic to room temperature.
