Four Quarters of History
"Professional football has come a long way from its origins as a game played on sandlots and frozen fields to the high-tech spectacular it is today. This book focuses on ten games of the modern era that, collectively, have shaped and defined the National Football League. The chapters will go beyond mere descriptions of the games as they trace the significance of a particular contest on the growth of the league. From "the greatest game ever played"-the 1958 NFL championship that marked the dawn of the TV era for the NFL-to Joe Namath''s guaranteed win in Super Bowl III, Franco Harris''s Immaculate Reception, and the rise of the New England Patriots'' dynasty, Fischer covers the games that have helped propel pro football to its status as the most popular game in America"--

Computer Generated Holography for 3D Lithographic Illumination

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Computer Generated Holography for 3D Lithographic Illumination

Safeguarding the Atom

release date: Nov 19, 2020
Safeguarding the Atom
Safeguards play a key role in verifying the effectiveness of restraints on the spread of nuclear weapons. Originally published in 1985, this book is a study of the safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency, an important element of the non-proliferation regime. It breaks new ground by focusing on the politics of safeguards, especially the political problems of the IAEA and of the day-to-day application of safeguards. It contains a critical appraisal and proposals for ways of improving existing procedures, and of adapting them to the political and technological changes of recent years. Safeguarding the Atom gives an analysis of the following questions: What are IAEA safeguards and how do they work? How effective are they? How can they be reinforced? What sanctions can be imposed in the event of non-compliance? IAEA safeguards represent the world''s first and so far only attempt to verify an arms control agreement by systematic on-site inspection, and their applicability to other arms control measures is examined.

Red Sox vs. Yankees

release date: May 07, 2019
Red Sox vs. Yankees
Teddy Ballgame or the Great Bambino? Nomar or Jeter? Clemens or Clemens? For more than 115 years, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have been battling it out on the diamond, playing each other over 2,000 times. This heated rivalry has stood the test of time, as one team’s triumph usually means the other’s dismay. While the teams battle on the field, the fans and cities take the rivalry just as seriously. But who’s the best? Which team’s players have the edge? Which team’s squad would reign supreme? If you ask a New Yorker, you’ll get an obvious answer; same with a Bostonian. But what happens when two men from opposite sides of the track sit down to discuss who is the best? Red Sox vs. Yankees pairs baseball historians Bill Nowlin (Red Sox) and David Fischer (Yankees) to discuss who each team’s best position player was and which super team would win in a head-to-head series. Obviously, they won’t easily agree. Obviously, there will be cheap shots and venom spewed back and forth. But in the end, we will have two teams: one of the greatest players and one of each squad’s best year. You can guess that Nowlin will say that the Sox will win, while Fischer is confident that the Yanks will be victorious. But it’s not that easy. Thanks to the help of Action! PC Baseball, we will have a simulation to find out which team would win in a head-to-head battle. Will the All-Star Yankees take the series? Will the Red Sox pummel the best the Bronx has to offer? There’s only one way to find out.

The New York Yankees of the 1950s

release date: Apr 01, 2019
The New York Yankees of the 1950s
The 1950s marked a transformative period in postwar American history. In baseball, one dynasty was the story during the decade. The New York Yankees played in eight World Series from 1950 to 1959, winning six of them. Yankees icon Joe DiMaggio retired following the 1951 season, but a new super star, Mickey Mantle, took over in Yankee Stadium’s center field in 1952. Mantle, the powerful switch-hitter who blasted tape-measure home runs, often tortured by leg ailments, was the number one box office draw in baseball. He was the American League’s most valuable player in 1956 and 1957, putting together a triple crown season in 1956. Mantle came into baseball when TV was just beginning to stir, and with the Yankees reaching the World Series and appearing on national TV seemingly every season, he became the face of the game during the decade. Mantle joined with his pals, pitcher Whitey Ford and infielder Billy Martin, to form a hard-partying trio that would be a joy and a pain to management. The author of several books on the Yankees, David Fischer will bring expertise and a knack for great story-telling to the saga of the most dominant decade in the annals of sport, set during a defining moment in U.S. history.

Aaron Judge

release date: Nov 21, 2017
Aaron Judge
At 6-foot-7 and 285 pounds, Aaron Judge emerged as the biggest story in baseball in 2017 with his monstrous home runs and record-breaking ability. A three-sport athlete in high school and a Division I ballplayer at Fresno State, the Californian was drafted by the New York Yankees in the first round in 2013 and made it to the majors by August 2016. Homering in his first major league at-bat and starting in right field straight out of spring training in 2017, he gave Yankees fans hope for the future, along with "Baby Bombers" teammates such as Gary Sanchez. After a rough start in which he batted below .200 and struck out in over 40 percent of his plate appearances after joining the Yankees, Judge turned things around and helped get his team off to a fast start in 2017 with 10 homers in April alone, tying the rookie record for the month. He then broke the legendary Joe DiMaggio’s team record for most round trippers by the All-Star break with 30, including one that measured at 495 feet. His mounting popularity enabled him to receive more All-Star votes than any American League player and to the creation of the "Judge''s Chambers" section located in the right-field stands of Yankee Stadium. Judge''s momentum next led to him winning the 2017 Home Run Derby where he smashed a total of 47, four of which traveled more than 500 feet. It''s no wonder that baseball commissioner Rob Manfred has said that Judge is a player "who can become the face of the game." In Aaron Judge: The Incredible Story of the New York Yankees'' Home Run-Hitting Phenom, David Fischer brings the exciting story of the Yankees'' newest superstar to life.

He even guest-hosted The Tonight Show. A licensed pilot, he flew jet airplanes across the globe. In Arnold Palmer: A Tribute to an American Icon, authors David Fischer and David Aretha relive Palmer’s thrilling championship moments while capturing his personal charms: his warmth, humor, and candor. Rarely seen photographs and memorabilia bring his story to life. Golfer Raymond Floyd may have summed it up best when he said that Palmer “set the standard for how superstars in every sport ought to be, in the way he has always signed autographs, in the way he has always made time for everyone . . . . And man, could he play the game.”

A Campus Climate Survey on Diversity and Inclusion

release date: Jan 01, 2017
A Campus Climate Survey on Diversity and Inclusion
In the fall of 2015, racial tensions on the University of Missouri - Columbia (MU) campus led to the high-profile protest movement Concerned Student 1950, which culminated in the resignations of the university system president and the chancellor of the university (Hoffman [and] Mitchell, 2016). In the weeks before the resignations, the present researcher and his former classmate, both students at MU, had been constructing a survey to measure the prevailing campus climate perceptions among MU students, faculty and staff as part of a project for an educational and psychological measurement course. The completed survey was approved by the course instructor, reviewed by class members and subsequently administered to 229 individuals, primarily students, in the university student center on December 3, 2015. Preliminary results from the survey were shared in class and were also distributed to two administrators in the inclusion, diversity and equity office and the dean of the university’s College of Education. This study examines the psychometric properties of the campus climate survey on diversity and inclusion by conducting a factor analysis on its 16 Likert-scale items and analyzing the factor scores as they relate to participant demographics. Sample data from undergraduate students (n = 215) was utilized in an effort to identify underlying factor structures. Two primary factors emerged from the data: Factor 1, desire for diversity and inclusion initiatives, for which six items were retained, and Factor 2, sense of comfort and belonging, for which three items were retained. Desire for diversity and inclusion initiatives (Factor 1) measures a respondent’s desire for a more diverse campus population as well as initiatives to increase cross-cultural experiences and understanding, while sense of comfort and belonging (Factor 2) measures whether an individual enjoys being a student and feels a sense of inclusion and comfort on campus. Internal consistency for the subscale scores was .92 and .73 for Factor 1 and Factor 2, respectively. Internal consistency for the whole scale was .68. Desire for diversity and inclusion initiatives (Factor 1) was higher for students of color than for White students, and it correlated positively with frequency of discrimination or harassment experiences. Sense of comfort and belonging (Factor 2) was lower for students of color than for White students, and it correlated negatively with frequency of discrimination or harassment experiences.

When Baseball Was King

release date: Apr 20, 2016
When Baseball Was King
Baseball is a special American sport. At the highest professional level, it is a display of athletic prowess and grace. Over the many decades young men have attempted to master its complexities and nuances to the best of their abilities. Thousands have enjoyed the sport at its many levels. One of those is at the adult amateur level, also frequently referred to as semi-pro baseball. In a bygone era small towns across the country had their local town teams, made up of high school and college players, local blue and white collar workers with baseball dreams, and paid outsiders. Those teams had avid fans who came out on a Sunday afternoon to root on their lads. It was a time when there were few outside interruptions or activities. Dunsmuir, California, a small railroad town in extreme Northern California, was no exception. From its first team that took on challengers in 1895, through two World Wars, to its final demise in 1970, semi-pro baseball ruled the town on lazy summer afternoons. The author was part of the tradition for eight blissful seasons and present at its final ending in 1970. He presents a season by season account of the team, the tough times along with the highs. He captures the feeling of the flow of the seasons and personalities of the men and boys who played the game with a sense of determination and feeling that this was their last chance to be part of this great sport. Within the restrictions of the newspaper coverage, all the names of past players are given along with the years they played. The ghosts of past players mix with each other over a 75 year span. The reader will feel a part of the action of each season and feel the ups and downs of the players and the fans. It was a long wonderful era when baseball was king.

The Super Bowl

release date: Oct 06, 2015
The Super Bowl
In 1966, as the champions of the AFL and NFL prepared to play each other for the first time, Kansas City Chiefs–owner Lamar Hunt wrote the following to Commissioner Pete Rozelle: “I have kiddingly called [the championship game] the Super Bowl, which obviously can be improved upon.” How wrong Hunt was. After the AFL merged with the NFL, “Super Bowl” became the official title of the NFL championship game in the years to come. In celebration of the first fifty Super Bowls, David Fischer traces its evolution from a game that didn’t sell out in 1967 to a worldwide phenomenon with a viewership in the hundreds of millions. Packed with dozens of arresting full-color illustrations—highlighting game action, memorabilia, and players and coaches—The Super Bowl includes sections on the greatest games, individual performances, and game-changing plays. Fischer explores unique Super Bowl angles as well, including a ranking of “The Best Who Never Won” and “The Best Who Never Lost,” along with perspectives from players and fans. He covers the action, the heroes, the strategy, and the records from half a century of championship football. This celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of America’s premier sporting event is an essential addition to any football fan’s collection. Derek Jeter #2
This book commemorates “The Captain’s” career in pinstripes through words and images. David Fischer traces Derek Jeter’s legendary baseball career, from his early minor-league struggles, through his exhilarating days as a Yankees superstar, to his status as an enduring symbol of the steroid-free athlete. Indeed, Jeter’s intangible ability to play at a high level in the postseason makes him the face of the modern Yankees dynasty—and of America’s national pastime. Fischer makes clear that Jeter walks in the footsteps of other Yankees greats such as Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle, and that someday his shadow will loom just as large. The author celebrates Jeter’s career in a fully illustrated, scrapbook-style album with passionate and vivid prose, supreme photographic images and memorabilia, call-out quotes, and dozens of personal anecdotes and recollections about Jeter from prominent members of the Yankees organization and the New York community. Lee Harvey Oswald

Lee Harvey Oswald
THE ASSASSINATION of John Fitzgerald Kennedy on November 22, 1963, was a cruel and shocking act of violence directed against a man, a family, a nation, and against all mankind. A young and vigorous leader whose years of public and private life stretched before him was the victim of the fourth Presidential assassination in the history of a country dedicated to the concepts of reasoned argument and peaceful political change.PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON, by Executive Order No. 11130 dated November 29, 1963, created the Commission to investigate the assassination on November 22, 1963, of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. The President directed the Commission to evaluate all the facts and circumstances surrounding the assassination and the subsequent killing of the alleged assassin and to report its findings and conclusions to him.The subject of the Commission''s inquiry was a chain of events which saddened and shocked the people of the United States and of the world. The assassination of President Kennedy and the simultaneous wounding of John B. Connally, Jr., Governor of Texas, had been followed within an hour by the slaying of Patrolman J. D. Tippit of the Dallas Police Department. Within 35 minutes of the killing of Patrolman Tippit, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested by the Dallas police as a suspect in that crime. On November 24, 1963, less than 18 hours after his arrest, Oswald was fatally shot in the basement of the Dallas Police Department by Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner. This shooting took place in full view of a national television audience. The events of these 2 days were witnessed with shock and disbelief by a Nation grieving the loss of its young leader. In many instances, the intense public demand for facts was met by partial and frequently conflicting reports from Dallas and elsewhere. After Oswald''s arrest and his denial of all guilt, public attention focused both on the extent of the evidence against him and the possibility of a conspiracy, domestic or foreign. His subsequent death heightened public interest and stimulated additional suspicions and rumors.

Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators

release date: Apr 29, 2014
Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators
Pollinators play a vital role in ecosystem health and are essential to ensuring food security. With declines in both managed and wild pollinator populations in recent years, scientists and regulators have sought answers to this problem and have explored implementing steps to protect pollinator populations now and for the future. Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators focuses on the role pesticides play in impacting bee populations and looks to develop a risk assessment process, along with the data to inform that process, to better assess the potential risks that can accompany the use of pesticide products. Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators opens with two chapters that provide a biological background of both Apis and non-Apis species of pollinators. Chapters then present an overview of the general regulatory risk assessment process and decision-making processes. The book then discusses the core elements of a risk assessment, including exposure estimation, laboratory testing, and field testing. The book concludes with chapters on statistical and modeling tools, and proposed additional research that may be useful in developing the ability to assess the impacts of pesticide use on pollinator populations. Summarizing the current state of the science surrounding risk assessment for Apis and non-Apis species, Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators is a timely work that will be of great use to the environmental science and agricultural research communities. Assesses pesticide risk to native and managed pollinators Summarizes the state of the science in toxicity testing and risk assessment Provides valuable biological overviews of both Apis and non-Apis pollinators Develops a plausible overall risk assessment framework for regulatory decision making Looks towards a globally harmonized approach for pollinator toxicity and risk assessment
