Seven Heretical Sermons

release date: Aug 15, 2023
Seven Heretical Sermons
Seven Heretical Sermons is a collection of essays in sermon form intended for the layperson dealing with the impact of modern science on theology. Written with a humorous, sometimes sarcastic tone, it reviews the historical development of several theological ideas, including aspects of beliefs about abortion, the origin of religion, homosexuality, evil, creation, and the nature of God; all in the context of modern scientific thought. In the past, when science has appeared to contradict theology, it has been theology that eventually adapted to science. Today that process continues, despite many efforts to resist the process. Here physics and anthropology are mixed with history and textual analysis to explore a new way of looking at religion.

The Mistakes

release date: Aug 31, 2020
The Mistakes
When Hal Southerland, a socially isolated computer contracts manager nearing retirement at a federal agency in Atlanta, spots a curious anomaly on an astronomy website, he realizes aliens are coming. A slip of the tongue before it becomes public knowledge results in Hal being chosen by the aliens to serve in a very special role: king of the planet. The catch is that Earth is on the verge of environmental disaster, and this very special role has a very special task: to choose which four billion humans will be "Disappeared" to preserve the oxygen essential for both human and alien survival. What follows is a series of missteps on the path toward creating a world where the aliens and humans can live together in peace. Will Hal and his alien "liaison" Angie (who looks a lot like Marilyn Monroe) find a way for humans and aliens to live side by side? Or will the mistakes continue in this clash of civilizations?

Wheels of Courage

release date: Aug 25, 2020
Wheels of Courage
Out of the carnage of World War II comes an unforgettable tale about defying the odds and finding hope in the most harrowing of circumstances. Wheels of Courage tells the stirring story of the soldiers, sailors, and marines who were paralyzed on the battlefield during World War II-at the Battle of the Bulge, on the island of Okinawa, inside Japanese POW camps-only to return to a world unused to dealing with their traumatic injuries. Doctors considered paraplegics to be "dead-enders" and "no-hopers," with the life expectancy of about a year. Societal stigma was so ingrained that playing sports was considered out-of-bounds for so-called "crippled bodies." But servicemen like Johnny Winterholler, a standout athlete from Wyoming before he was captured on Corregidor, and Stan Den Adel, shot in the back just days before the peace treaty ending the war was signed, refused to waste away in their hospital beds. Thanks to medical advances and the dedication of innovative physicians and rehabilitation coaches, they asserted their right to a life without limitations. The paralyzed veterans formed the first wheelchair basketball teams, and soon the Rolling Devils, the Flying Wheels, and the Gizz Kids were barnstorming the nation and filling arenas with cheering, incredulous fans. The wounded-warriors-turned-playmakers were joined by their British counterparts, led by the indomitable Dr. Ludwig Guttmann. Together, they triggered the birth of the Paralympic Games and opened the gymnasium doors to those with other disabilities, including survivors of the polio epidemic in the 1950s.Much as Jackie Robinson''s breakthrough into the major leagues served as an opening salvo in the civil rights movement, these athletes helped jump-start a global movement about human adaptability. Their unlikely heroics on the court showed the world that it is ability, not disability, that matters most. Off the court, their push for equal rights led to dramatic changes in how civilized societies treat individuals with disabilities: from kneeling buses and curb cutouts to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Their saga is yet another lasting legacy of the Greatest Generation, one that has been long overlooked. Drawing on the veterans'' own words, stories, and memories about this pioneering era, David Davis has crafted a narrative of survival, resilience, and triumph for sports fans and athletes, history buffs and military veterans, and people with and without disabilities.

Son of a Predator

release date: Dec 28, 2017
Son of a Predator
BASED ON ACTUAL EVENTS and inspired by the #METOO and Times Up movements. This book was written to show other victims that they are not alone. It also hopes to expose the techniques predators use that allow them to continue to "get away with it." FROM THE BACK OF THE BOOK JACKET: How far would you go to protect your family from a deeply painful truth? All David''s life, he was treated as if he were expendable. Raised by a doctor who valued wealth, education and social status above all else, David was made to believe he failed to live up to his father''s standards, despite his best efforts. This conditioning created a deep longing to be valued and that, coupled with his unwavering love for his cherished grandmother, led to David''s introduction to Johnny Russell. Over the course of a year and a half, David became Johnny''s beard and cleaner. He lied for him, protected him and enabled him, descending into a world of drugs, prostitution and excess that few people see. Still unwilling to tell his family the truth about Johnny, but hating himself for his part in Johnny''s secret life, David was only able to shake off his conditioning after suffering a near fatal motorcycle accident and being in a coma for twenty days. In that coma, David crossed from this plane to the next and saw the light -- literally. The experience transformed and strengthened him. He awoke vowing to change his life and be a better man. But at what cost? While a cautionary tale about blind family loyalty, Son of a Predator is ultimately a story of personal redemption that will hopefully prompt others to reflect on their core relationships, the terrible cost of secrets, and how they value the gifts they have been given in life...

Joppa Flats

release date: Apr 27, 2017

Coventry

release date: Jul 23, 2016
Coventry
It all started with a conversation between the leaders of the Benelux Union; Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, after a meeting of the entire European Union. 3 years later, on what was to become known as C-Day, all at once, United Nations dignitaries, ambassadors, and their staffs, left the U.S. Conference rooms were empty. Meetings were missed. They collectively closed up shop and left. Embassies locked their doors. Foreign lobbying offices were barren. The next day, at 8pm EST in the U.S., every major network in the rest of the world (ROTW) broadcasted the largest assembly of world leaders, both in person, live from The Hague, and via satellite, that had ever been convened. The ROTW declared they no longer wished to do business, or have any involvement, cooperation, or communication, whatsoever, with the U.S. The deployment of drones, the endless "collateral damage" of civilians, the chemical weapons that were stockpiled, the plots to kill heads of state, and the unending spying. The selling of arms for drugs for arms to overthrow elected officials that were not in sync with American needs. Everything that the U.S. government accused other countries of doing was practiced foremost by the U.S. The world finally decided to give the U.S. the "silent treatment," to send them to Coventry, as the British were fond of saying. Chaos, panic, and financial collapse ensued. And that was just the beginning. From first time author, David Davis, comes an intriguing, fact based fictional look at what would happen if the U.S. was shunned by the rest of the world.

Showdown at Shepherd's Bush

release date: Jun 19, 2012
Showdown at Shepherd's Bush
The epic clash of an Irish-American, Italian, and Onondaga-Canadian that jump-started the first marathon mania and heralded the modern age in sports The eyes of the world watched as three runners—dirt poor Johnny Hayes, who used to run barefoot through the streets of New York City; candymaker Dorando Pietri; and the famed Tom Longboat—converged for an epic battle at the 1908 London Olympics. The incredible finish was contested the world over when Pietri, who initially ran the wrong way upon entering the stadium at Shepherd''s Bush, finished first but was disqualified for receiving aid from officials after collapsing just shy of the finish line, thus giving the title to runner-up Hayes. In the midst of anti-American sentiment, Queen Alexandra awarded a special cup to Pietri, who became an international celebrity and inspired one of Irving Berlin''s first songs. In Showdown at Shepherd''s Bush, David Davis recalls a time when runners braved injurious roads with slips of leather for shoes and when marathon mania became a worldwide obsession. Standing next to Cait Murphy''s Crazy ''08 as an invaluable look at a bygone sporting era, Showdown at Shepherd''s Bush is a dramatic narrative aimed at the recordsetting number of marathon participants in the United States (more than 500,000 in 2010!) and other running enthusiasts, and timed nicely for the return of the Olympics to London in 2012.
