The classic translation of one of the greatest poetry epics in the western world. In this fantastic journey, the narrator is taken down to the pits of Hell to see the various circles and pits that await the fate of sinful humanity. In this tour he sees many horrific things that at the time of writing will have traumatized anyone reading this story in the medieval era. After his trip to the bottom of Hell, he is taken into the realm of Purgatory there to see the spiral that souls must climb as they undergo the process of sanctification so that they may be welcomed into the gates of Heaven. Lastly, we are taken through the various realms and sections of the true hope of all humanity, Heaven. We see the glory of the heavens as Dante manages to write in a way that makes us in awe of what is to come. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem''s imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.On the surface, the poem describes Dante''s travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise or Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents, allegorically, the soul''s journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Inferno is the first part of Italian poet Dante Alighieri''s epic poem Divine Comedy. The allegory describes Dante''s journey through the depths of Hell. He is led by the Roman poet Virgil down into the nine circles of Hell, each of which holds and punishes progressively worse sinners. From the First Circle, where unbaptized souls live in peaceful limbo, down to the Ninth Circle, where Satan is trapped in ice, Dante sees firsthand the consequence of unrepentantly sinning against God. Dante published his narrative poem between 1308 and 1321. This version is taken from an 1892 English edition, featuring British author Rev. H. F. Cary''s blank verse translation and woodcut illustrations by French artist Gustave Doré.

The "Purgatorio", perhaps the most artistically perfect of the three canticles, owes less to the beauty of the separate episodes. Dante''s conception of purgatory as a lofty mountain, rising out of the ocean in the southern hemisphere, and leading up to the Garden of Eden, the necessary preparation for winning back the earthly paradise, and with it all the prerogatives lost by man at the fall of Adam, seems peculiar to him; nor do we find elsewhere the purifying process carried on beneath the sun and stars, with the beauty of transfigured nature only eclipsed by the splendour of the angelic custodians of the seven terraces. The meeting with Beatrice on the banks of Lethe, with Dante''s personal confession of an unworthy past, completes the story of the "Vita Nuova" after the bitter experiences and disillusions of a lifetime. The essence of Dante''s philosophy is that all virtues and all vices proceed from love. The "Purgatorio" shows how love is to be set in order, the "Paradiso" shows how it is rendered perfect in successive stages of illumination, until it attains to union with the Divine Love.
