Ginseng Roots

Ginseng Roots

Ginseng Roots: The Complete Box Set
2 EISNER AWARD NOMINATIONS / Best Graphic Memoir and Best Writer/Artist Craig Thompson Set of twelve comic books. Includes Hello Chunky Root mini-comic and a sticker. From ages 10 to 20, Craig Thompson (author of Blankets, Goodbye Chunky Rice, Habibi, Carnet De Voyage, Space Dumplins) and his little brother Phil toiled in Wisconsin farms weeding and harvesting ginseng. The medicinal herb fetched considerable profits in China and funded Craig''s youthful obsession with comic books. Comics, in turn, allowed him to escape his rural, working-class trappings. For the first time in his career, Thompson is serializing his story. Part memoir, part travelogue, part essay-- all comic book--Ginseng Roots is a sweeping narrative that unearths surprising connections between class divide, agriculture, holistic healing, the 300-year-long trade relationship between China and North America, childhood labor, and the bond between two brothers.

Becoming Lunsford Lane

release date: May 27, 2025
Becoming Lunsford Lane
By challenging the rules of enslavement and, later, pushing the boundaries of free citizenship in North Carolina, Lunsford Lane (1803–79) became a folk hero to many enslaved Southerners, as well as a generation of abolitionists. Author of a unique “slave narrative” and a speaking partner with some of the era’s greatest orators, including William Lloyd Garrison, Henry Highland Garnett, William Wells Brown, and Frederick Douglass, Lane became a celebrity who watched as the persona he created gradually faltered and failed him and his family. Yet even as his influence waned, it was still powerful enough to cause many to remake his image for their own purposes: as a fugitive from slavery, an entrepreneur, a Christian minister, and even an abolitionist (an identity he rejected). Lane also made many enemies who tried to silence him—a white mob determined to tar and feather him, reformers who saw his contributions to abolition as a threat to their causes, and a neighbor who attempted to set fire to the Lane home while Lunsford and his family slept inside. In the first biography of Lunsford Lane based on original and extensive research, Craig Thompson Friend portrays a man who dreamed beyond his enslavement, delivered himself and his family from bondage, and spun a story of his life that brought him lasting freedom and fleeting fame. Friend casts light on Lane’s family origins as well as his complex relationships with his wife, parents, children, enslavers, fellow abolitionists, and nation. Lane’s story is a biography for our times: a man searching to define life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in a changing American society scarred by contentious politics, economic challenges, class tensions, loss of political rights, and racial violence.

Tepper

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Tepper

"From 1969 to 1991 the Big Muskie worked the southeastern quadrant of Muskingum County, Ohio removing tons of soil, rock, and materials exposing numerous coal seams. Labeled the world''s largest dragline, the Big Muskie was so massive it took approximately 2 years to construct on-site. Powered exclusively by electricity, a 330 foot twin boom, weighing 27,000,000 pounds or 13,500 tons, a 220 cubic yard bucket, and visible from miles away, the Big Muskie claimed near legendary status during and after its tenure. This is a story of the Big Muskie''s 22 year operation, its retirement, efforts to save it, and its eventual dismantling .The story doesn''t end there however. Chapters include topics such as coal, strip mining, reclamation, and the dedication of Miners Memorial Park where the only remnant of the Big Muskie resides. And for closure, how reclamation gave birth to a nationally recognized conservation center."--Back cover.
