Becoming Lunsford Lane

release date: May 27, 2025
Becoming Lunsford Lane
By challenging the rules of enslavement and, later, pushing the boundaries of free citizenship in North Carolina, Lunsford Lane (1803–79) became a folk hero to many enslaved Southerners, as well as a generation of abolitionists. Author of a unique “slave narrative” and a speaking partner with some of the era’s greatest orators, including William Lloyd Garrison, Henry Highland Garnett, William Wells Brown, and Frederick Douglass, Lane became a celebrity who watched as the persona he created gradually faltered and failed him and his family. Yet even as his influence waned, it was still powerful enough to cause many to remake his image for their own purposes: as a fugitive from slavery, an entrepreneur, a Christian minister, and even an abolitionist (an identity he rejected). Lane also made many enemies who tried to silence him—a white mob determined to tar and feather him, reformers who saw his contributions to abolition as a threat to their causes, and a neighbor who attempted to set fire to the Lane home while Lunsford and his family slept inside. In the first biography of Lunsford Lane based on original and extensive research, Craig Thompson Friend portrays a man who dreamed beyond his enslavement, delivered himself and his family from bondage, and spun a story of his life that brought him lasting freedom and fleeting fame. Friend casts light on Lane’s family origins as well as his complex relationships with his wife, parents, children, enslavers, fellow abolitionists, and nation. Lane’s story is a biography for our times: a man searching to define life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in a changing American society scarred by contentious politics, economic challenges, class tensions, loss of political rights, and racial violence.

Blankets - Edizione 20° anniversario

The Big Muskie
"From 1969 to 1991 the Big Muskie worked the southeastern quadrant of Muskingum County, Ohio removing tons of soil, rock, and materials exposing numerous coal seams. Labeled the world''s largest dragline, the Big Muskie was so massive it took approximately 2 years to construct on-site. Powered exclusively by electricity, a 330 foot twin boom, weighing 27,000,000 pounds or 13,500 tons, a 220 cubic yard bucket, and visible from miles away, the Big Muskie claimed near legendary status during and after its tenure. This is a story of the Big Muskie''s 22 year operation, its retirement, efforts to save it, and its eventual dismantling .The story doesn''t end there however. Chapters include topics such as coal, strip mining, reclamation, and the dedication of Miners Memorial Park where the only remnant of the Big Muskie resides. And for closure, how reclamation gave birth to a nationally recognized conservation center."--Back cover.

Millennial Jihadism and Terrorism in France - Al Qaeda and Islamic State Foreign Fighters, Assimilation Among Young Muslims, Origins of Radicalization and Marginalization, Charlie Hebdo Attack

release date: Jun 10, 2019
Millennial Jihadism and Terrorism in France - Al Qaeda and Islamic State Foreign Fighters, Assimilation Among Young Muslims, Origins of Radicalization and Marginalization, Charlie Hebdo Attack
This fascinating report was issued in March 2019. The volume of extreme Islamic-inspired attacks in France in 2012-2016, the hundreds of French foreign fighters supporting the Islamic State''s ruthless violence in the Levant, and the low level of assimilation to mainstream French culture by young French Muslims have quickly become major concerns for the security and stability of France. The French Republic is a European sovereign nation with inclusive immigration policies, an active proponent of full assimilation for minorities and immigrants, and a non-participant in the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003. The French government and the nation''s citizens therefore did not anticipate this spate of jihadist terrorism. This thesis investigates the large-scale terror attacks, including the backgrounds and motivations of the perpetrators, and then assesses relevant analytical explanations by prominent French scholars of the increase in religion-inspired violence in France in 2012-2016. These scholars'' views differ on the origins of radicalization and terrorist behavior, and notably in regard to the role of religion in terms of social alienation and marginalization. By neutralizing the disruptive message at the source, deradicalizing the French prison system, and properly censoring the online channels of manpower recruitment, the French government can enhance its ability to prevent the infection of today''s youth by this radical doctrine of salvation. This compilation includes a reproduction of the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community.A new era of terror in France began in 2012 when a French citizen with ethnic ties to North Africa went on a killing spree in the south of the country. The subsequent sequence of attacks illustrated a new and more sinister level of religious-inspired violence in the French homeland. Homegrown extremists, born and raised or naturalized and inculcated into French culture and society conducted these attacks. These attacks, exceptionally violent and claimed by known terrorist organizations, sent a shockwave of terror into the heart of the French Republic. Al Qaeda (AQ) and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) enthusiastically applauded and emphatically claimed these unprecedented and sadistically vicious attacks. The violence escalated dramatically in January 2015, when three French citizens conducted a well-coordinated assault against the satire magazine Charlie Hebdo. Each of these Frenchmen-radical extremists-fought to his death against local law enforcement. Later that same year, the violence escalated yet again. The terrorist attacks on the Stade de France and the Bataclan Concert Hall in Paris represented a new level of violence, one not witnessed in France since the Nazi occupation of World War II. The violence reached its zenith in 2016 with the catastrophic attack directed against the crowds gathering to celebrate Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in the southern French city of Nice. When all these large-scale and religiously inspired terrorist attacks concluded, jihadists were responsible for taking the lives of more than 247 people and injuring more than 800. These homegrown terrorists, responsible for the large-scale jihadi violence in France from 2012 to 2016, represented a new demographic of terrorism, a younger population of French citizens responsible for committing Islamic-inspired violence against their own government.

A New History of Kentucky

release date: Nov 26, 2018
A New History of Kentucky
When originally published, A New History of Kentucky provided a comprehensive study of the Commonwealth, bringing it to life by revealing the many faces, deep traditions, and historical milestones of the state. With new discoveries and findings, the narrative continues to evolve, and so does the telling of Kentucky''s rich history. In this second edition, authors James C. Klotter and Craig Thompson Friend provide significantly revised content with updated material on gender politics, African American history, and cultural history. This wide-ranging volume includes a full overview of the state and its economic, educational, environmental, racial, and religious histories. At its essence, Kentucky''s story is about its people -- not just the notable and prominent figures but also lesser-known and sometimes overlooked personalities. The human spirit unfolds through the lives of individuals such as Shawnee peace chief Nonhelema Hokolesqua and suffrage leader Madge Breckinridge, early land promoter John Filson, author Wendell Berry, and Iwo Jima flag--raiser Private Franklin Sousley. They lived on a landscape defined by its topography as much as its political boundaries, from Appalachia in the east to the Jackson Purchase in the west, and from the Walker Line that forms the Commonwealth''s southern boundary to the Ohio River that shapes its northern boundary. Along the journey are traces of Kentucky''s past -- its literary and musical traditions, its state-level and national political leadership, and its basketball and bourbon. Yet this volume also faces forthrightly the Commonwealth''s blemishes -- the displacement of Native Americans, African American enslavement, the legacy of violence, and failures to address poverty and poor health. A New History of Kentucky ranges throughout all parts of the Commonwealth to explore its special meaning to those who have called it home. It is a broadly interpretive, all-encompassing narrative that tells Kentucky''s complex, extensive, and ever-changing story.

Representation Theory of the Global Cherednik Algebra

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Representation Theory of the Global Cherednik Algebra
This thesis studies the representation theory of Cherednik algebras associated to a complex algebraic varieties which carries the action of a finite group. First, we prove that the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov functor from the category of P-coherent modules for the Cherednik algebra to finite dimensional modules over the Hecke algebra is essentially surjective. Then we begin to use this result to study the analog of category 0 for Cherednik algebras on Riemann surfaces and on products of elliptic curves. In particular we give conditions on the parameters under which this category 0 analog is nonzero. Our next goal is to generalize several basic results from the theory of D-modules to the representation theory of rational Cherednik algebras. We relate characterizations of holonomic modules in terms of singular support and Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. We study pullback, pushforward, and dual on the derived category of (holonomic) Cherednik modules for certain classes of maps between varieties. We prove, in the case of generic parameters for the rational Cherednik algebra, that pushforward with respect to an open affine inclusion preserves holonomicity. Finally, we relate the global sections algebra of the sheaf of Cherednik algebras associated to a smooth quadric hypersurface of Pn to the Dunkl angular momentum algebra of Feigin-Hakobyan. In particular, this lets us relate the angular momentum algebra for a rank 3 Coxeter group to the rank 2 symplectic reflection algebra for a corresponding finite subgroup of SL2.

Preaching a Christian Worldview in a Post-Christian Culture

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Preaching a Christian Worldview in a Post-Christian Culture
This dissertation examines worldview preaching in a post-Christian culture. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of worldview preaching and its necessity for evangelism within the church of the twenty-first century. This chapter also defines terms used throughout and establishes the methodology for the research. Chapter 2 takes a more in-depth look at presuppositional “apologetical preaching” and its application to the study of worldview in evangelistic preaching. This chapter also shows the difference between apologetical preaching and expositional preaching and suggests apologetical preaching as a needed corrective. Chapter 3 argues that worldview preaching is a form of spiritual warfare. This chapter also outlines the ways that preaching is spiritual warfare in three areas: battle with the flesh, battle with the world, and battle with Satan. Chapter 4 introduces the concept of sermon-driven discipleship. It is argued in this chapter that evangelism cannot be separated from discipleship and that evangelistic preaching necessarily focuses on discipleship as well. This chapter also shows how worldview preaching can direct the discipleship ministries of the church. Chapter 5 investigates examples of worldview preaching. It is argued in this chapter that some preachers from the past and present practice the form of worldview preaching advocated in this dissertation without having applied the particular terms associated with this research project. This chapter critiques those who have adopted secular worldviews in their preaching as well as those who have adapted their message delivery to fit the secular world. Chapter 6 examines the deficiency of worldview emphasis in preaching literature. It commends John Stott’s approach, but also shows that bridging the two worlds doesn’t go far enough. This chapter then surveys a number of preaching texts for their emphasis on worldview and presuppositional apologetics in their treatment of preaching. Chapter 7 answers the question of how these findings can be applied to contemporary churches. It concludes by emphasizing the need for preachers to engage with the world around them and to challenge the worldview of their secular hearers and challenges church leaders and educators to adapt their approach to preaching and preaching education to include presuppositional apologetics as a necessary component.

Along the Kaw

release date: Dec 01, 2012
Along the Kaw
Have you ever experienced the beauty and serenity of a float trip down the Kaw (Kansas River)? Seen and heard Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Least Terns and other wildlife from a canoe or kayak? Picnicked on a sandbar and learned about the Kaw and its environs from guest speakers? Camped under a full moon on a sandbar in the Flint Hills? Experienced a sunset at Kaw Point - a historically significant Lewis and Clark site in Kansas? Craig Thompson has enjoyed many of these outdoor experiences on the Kaw and is eager to share one of the state''s best kept secrets. Along the Kaw: A Journey Down the Kansas River is a book about a recreational and scenic journey down the Kansas River. Through seventy-five color photographs, you will discover the wonders of the Kaw, the beauty of the Kaw, and people enjoying outdoor recreation on the Kaw. Many of the photographs are brought to life by comments from various people whose lives have been touched in some way by the Kaw. Throughout the book, comments by thirty-nine contributing authors are paired with images of the natural Kaw and images of the recreational Kaw. Many comments point to wildlife diversity and to recreational opportunities afforded by the river. Other comments express feelings of isolation, getting away from the hustle and bustle of life, and the peace of mind the river brings naturally. Along the Kaw is in the class of illustrated photographic books that show the beauty of Kansas. Thompson''s book is the first of its kind to cover the entire length of the Kaw - from Junction City to Kansas City, Kansas. The chapter map sequence in the book follows the river from upstream to downstream direction (Upper to Middle to Lower Kaw). Upper Kaw The first chapter covers the "Upper Kaw" from Junction City to Manhattan and contains images of the magnificent Flint Hills. One page shows an image of people enjoying a campfire on a sandbar with the backdrop of the Flint Hills behind them. Erlene Slingsby, whose comments were matched with this image, writes, "There is simply nothing more relaxing than sitting around the campfire, swapping stories with friends and sipping a hot drink." This chapter also has images of the beginning of the Kaw, a two page panoramic of the Flint Hills, fall scenery, Great Blue Heron fishing, and paddlers enjoying their journey down the river. Middle Kaw The second chapter covers the "Middle Kaw" from Manhattan to Lecompton. Images of paddlers floating by the Flint Hills and people sitting on a sand bank watching a full moon are some of the recreational highlights of this middle portion of the Kaw. There is an image of paddlers exploring a limestone train bridge near Wamego. Bill Cutler wrote, "Even on stretches of the river I''ve paddled many times, I always discover something new." Other parts of this chapter show beautiful images of the natural Kaw, with scenes like cottonwoods along a bank in early spring, a sandbar sculptured by wind and water, an ancient glacial rock island, a Bald Eagle soaring overhead, and a flock of American White Pelicans resting in a river channel. Lower Kaw Finally in the third chapter, there are many images taken along the Kaw between Lecompton and Kansas City, with scenes of numerous paddlers on Friends of the Kaw fundraiser float trips, scenes of Jayhawk crew members rowing, and scenes of people enjoying recreational fishing. Near the mouth of the river, there are scenes of the urban Kaw such as old steel girder bridges and paddlers floating by Kemper Arena. In a downtown scene showing the skyline of Kansas City, Missouri, Doug Jensen wrote, "I live one mile down the river from Kaw Point in a loft in downtown Kansas City. Since I have no backyard, the Kaw River has become my back yard. I am on the water most every available night during the summer."
