Overpowered!

Overpowered!
Hypnotism has fascinated and inspired people since the mid-1800s, when entertainers and medical professionals enthusiastically took up this Far Eastern practice. This is the first popular, illustrated history of hypnosis. It tackles the (relatively) reputable aspects of the subject--brain imaging, clinical trials, and hypnotherapy--alongside the smoke and mirrors of stage hypnosis. The author has uncovered intriguing stories about the larger-than-life characters who inhabit the world of hypnosis. From Professors of Mesmerism to Princes of Necromancy, this book explores the different guises of hypnotism as portrayed by pseudo-scientists and showmen alike. It takes a very personal approach to the central questions posed by hypnosis: why do we want to give up our power? Why do we think someone else can change us, if we can't change ourselves? Why do we want to alter our normal patterns of cognition? Why would anyone go on stage and do what a sweaty guy in a cheap suit tells them to do? An accredited hypnotherapist and performer himself, the author examines the connections between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy or, in other words, the point at which showbiz meets self-help and sleight-of-hand meets scholarly research. The book is practical, informative, and entertaining, and fully illustrated with colorful source material from the archives of the British Library.

The Economic Water Model - a Method and Software Program for Assessing the Impacts of Storm Water "green Solutions" in Urban Areas

release date: Jan 01, 2011
The Economic Water Model - a Method and Software Program for Assessing the Impacts of Storm Water "green Solutions" in Urban Areas
A new model is needed for storm water "green solutions" such as rain gardens, bioswales, and rain barrels. Estimating average annual runoff at the property level is essential to providing precise estimates on the effectiveness of stormwater "green solutions" like rain barrels and rain gardens. This information can also be used to implement a more accurate stormwater fee so municipalities can generate revenue to fund water infrastructure improvements, water conservation efforts, or storm water mitigation projects, while also providing a performance based rebate for those property owners who do install a storm water green solution. Rather than use modeling tools that utilize single design storms and runoff coefficients, site-specific GIS data can be input for a continuous runoff model whose focus is not conveyance but interception and infiltration. A distributed, deterministic Economic Water Model (EWM) method and modeling software was developed to estimate runoff using site-specific climate, soil, slope, and surface conditions extracted from GIS, weather station, and USDA soil data. Findings indicate that widespread implementation of rain barrels and rain gardens can have significant effects on urban runoff, especially in dense residential areas with small lot sizes. While this model also demonstrates that energy consumption is reduced at the municipal level through reduced combined sewer water treatment, the most significant water-related energy savings is from simple water-saving devices like low-flow faucet aerators. The results of this modeling can be used to implement and maintain more sustainable water infrastructure systems, economically and environmentally.

In America, there are 46 million young people between the ages of 8-18 and 16 million of them are growing up without a mentor. Growing up, I fit this statistic, and therefore, I work so hard with my young males because I want them to have someone in their lives I did not. Whitney Houston stated it best, "I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way!" My question to you is, "Who is leading them?" A strong, mighty leader builds up, strengthens, and invests.

Human Zombie Biology

release date: Aug 24, 2023
Human Zombie Biology
Zombies aren't real. To our knowledge, there are no secret government laboratories working on creating or defeating the zombie menace, but if such laboratories are ever created then sign us up to be the earth's last, best hope. Human Zombie Biology provides students the knowledge to gain a greater understanding of the concepts of biology as they apply to zombies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has even used zombies to educate the American Public on how to be prepared for any emergency, using the philosophy that if you are prepared for the zombies you are certainly prepared for whatever Mother Nature may throw at you. It is in this spirit that we offer you this book; what better way to learn the concepts of Biology than by using our friend the zombie? Think you don't use biology? Think again. Every time you take a deep sniff of air to determine if there is a decaying zombie nearby-- or, slightly more likely, to determine if the old take-out food in the back of your fridge is safe to eat it-then you are using biology. Since people have started talking and then writing about zombies these stories have been a reflection of society, and have drawn upon scientific knowledge to make the stores as realistic as possible. So realistic are these stories that they make for excellent educational tools as they both grab your attention and can impart knowledge. Included with your eBook purchase, you will also receive access to KHQ, Kendall Hunt's exclusive custom study app. Designed for today's fast-paced environment, KHQ features chapter quizzes and flashcards that empower students to learn on the go!
