RESPIRE: the Black Male Anthology

release date: Jul 31, 2023
RESPIRE: the Black Male Anthology
"It is important for Black men to have a safe space where they can find encouragement from other men who understand what they''re going through, and this book will provide that space." - Dr. Kimberly Ellison, Owner of Sparkle PublishingFrom history''s past to the present day, Black men have faced countless inequities and disparities in the workplace, business, and life. At almost every turn, one reads, sees, and hears oppressive stories of marginalization and discrimination against Black men in America, and it can be easy for Black men to lose hope. In 2014, "I can''t breathe," the last spoken words of Eric Garner, a Black man who died in a choke hold at the hands of New York City police officers, quickly became the narrative for various social movements, organizations, and people around the world. Although unfortunate events created a mantra for a movement, those events quickly became a narrative that restricted the uplifting stories of many Black men. It is time for Black men to tell their stories of respiration of how they rediscovered their hope, courage, and strength during times of difficulty. Respire gives readers permission to breathe again and build again. Men of all ages whose faith has been under fire or experienced life''s challenges will find a part of themselves in this book. Respire is a safe space for men to find encouragement and mentorship from the stories of other men who understand their experiences. Respire is an anthology of stories that share how these successful Black men turned their fear into faith and troubles into triumph, found destiny amid downsizing, found God amid pulling the trigger, overcame impoverished environments, turned depression into dreams, and left their home country and found purpose.

Perfect Imperfection

Perfect Imperfection
Christopher Michael Green, as the first born son of pastors in a highly successful urban community church in St. Louis, Missouri, was simply living his best life. A multi-gifted young man in creative and technical arts, he was part of a large extended family of professionals and creatives: musicians, singers, songwriters, poets, artists, academics, educators, medical professionals, entrepreneurs, producers, pastors and community leaders.Christopher was not merely raised in and around spiritual settings, but he was trained by his father in the production and media departments of his uncle''s local church and community outreach. By the time he was 16 years old, he was the technical director of the ministry''s award-winning local cable television broadcast. But everything changed when his parents answered the call to plant a church in south central Pennsylvania. Torn from all that was familiar and comfortable, Chris expressed his pain and frustration in the way that came most natural to him, his writings. It was a season of expressing raw emotion and it took several years for understanding to come. However, when he looked back over that part of his journey, he believed he should publish the unedited version of his story for others who might find themselves in that same dark emotional and spiritual space.Christopher Michael Green lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he met his beautiful wife Antonette. They have been married since March of 2015, and have grown together while preparing themselves to fulfill God''s purpose and plan for their lives.

John Golding

release date: Jan 01, 2017
John Golding
John Golding (1929-2012) was a British artist, scholar and curator.Perhaps best known for his seminal book, Cubism: A history and an Analysis 1907-1914 (1959) he actually considered himself primarily a painter and exhibited extensively both in the UK and internationally during a career that spanned almost six decades. In retrospect, his reputation as a notable art historian somewhat, arguably, overshadowed his own practice as an artist. So, this new monograph endeavours to reveal and celebrate the other side of his oeuvre.''Golding''s knowledge of Renaissance painting, especially the great Venetians [...] informed his own work as he moved out of figuration and into abstract canvases in which light was the subject. He painted vertical streaks of colour down his canvases like pleated light (as he put it) and occasionally on, say, a misty blue, he would scatter clusters of gold pigment to reflect the actual light. After the end of the 20th century, he started to structure his paintings so that they appeared to be based on photographs from thousands of feet above the Earth, with ''roads'' and ''bridges'' and ''canals''...'' - Michael McNay, 2012 (The Guardian)Golding''s work was additionally shown alongside Bridget Riley, John Hoyland, Frank Auerbach, Peter Blake and David Hockney in important group exhibitions in London such as, British Painting 74'' at Hayward Gallery and, British Painting 1952-77 at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Equal Citizenship, Civil Rights, and the Constitution

release date: Nov 19, 2015
Equal Citizenship, Civil Rights, and the Constitution
The Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment is arguably the most historically important clause of the most significant part of the US Constitution. Designed to be a central guarantor of civil rights and civil liberties following Reconstruction, this clause could have been at the center of most of the country''s constitutional controversies, not only during Reconstruction, but in the modern period as well; yet for a variety of historical reasons, including precedent-setting narrow interpretations, the Privileges or Immunities Clause has been cast aside by the Supreme Court. This book investigates the Clause in a textualist-originalist manner, an approach increasingly popular among both academics and judges, to examine the meanings actually expressed by the text in its original context. Arguing for a revival of the Privileges or Immunities Clause, author Christopher Green lays the groundwork for assessing the originalist credentials of such areas of law as school segregation, state action, sex discrimination, incorporation of the Bill of Rights against states, the relationship between tradition and policy analysis in assessing fundamental rights, and the Fourteenth Amendment rights of corporations and aliens. Thoroughly argued and historically well-researched, this book demonstrates that the Privileges or Immunities Clause protects liberty and equality, and it will be of interest to legal academics, American legal historians, and anyone interested in American constitutional history.

Overpowered!

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Overpowered!
Hypnotism has fascinated and inspired people since the mid-1800s, when entertainers and medical professionals enthusiastically took up this Far Eastern practice. This is the first popular, illustrated history of hypnosis. It tackles the (relatively) reputable aspects of the subject--brain imaging, clinical trials, and hypnotherapy--alongside the smoke and mirrors of stage hypnosis. The author has uncovered intriguing stories about the larger-than-life characters who inhabit the world of hypnosis. From Professors of Mesmerism to Princes of Necromancy, this book explores the different guises of hypnotism as portrayed by pseudo-scientists and showmen alike. It takes a very personal approach to the central questions posed by hypnosis: why do we want to give up our power? Why do we think someone else can change us, if we can''t change ourselves? Why do we want to alter our normal patterns of cognition? Why would anyone go on stage and do what a sweaty guy in a cheap suit tells them to do? An accredited hypnotherapist and performer himself, the author examines the connections between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy or, in other words, the point at which showbiz meets self-help and sleight-of-hand meets scholarly research. The book is practical, informative, and entertaining, and fully illustrated with colorful source material from the archives of the British Library.

Breaking Plates: Fracturing Fictions and Archetypal Imaginings

release date: Dec 13, 2011
Breaking Plates: Fracturing Fictions and Archetypal Imaginings
Four decades ago, archetypal psychology offered a different way of viewing all things psychological. As radical and useful as this move was forty years ago, however, it is time to question the sustainability of tenets like these for our contemporary world. As the highly turbulent 21st Century enters its second decade, it is time to ask ourselves "why archetypes?" and "why images?" This book explores these questions through a variety of topics, ranging from clinical psychology, death, cultural colonialism, paranoia, feminism, ecology, education, capitalism to politics. This book is committed to the fact that an archetypal approach should not estrange us from mundane reality; it should facilitate a stronger, more complex, and more active involvement with it. This is what archetypal studies are setting out to do-yes: to do.
