Cubism and Reality

release date: Jan 01, 2025
Cubism and Reality
"Lavishly illustrated and filled with rich new insights that are the product of decades'' worth of research, Cubism and Reality challenges the commonly-held view of Cubism as either a retreat from reality into abstraction, arguing instead that Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, and Juan Gris wanted to find ways of intensifying and expanding painting''s capacity to give viewers more, not less, of their lived experience of the world. It explores how Cubist artworks ask us to reflect on visual art''s relationship to everyday visual experience, tackling a fundamental issue that has preoccupied artists and critics for over a century: the survival of hand-made representational artworks in the epoch of photography, film and, in the present age, digital reproduction"--

A Political Family

release date: Jan 01, 2017
A Political Family
The Kuczynskis were a German-Jewish family of active anti-fascists who worked assiduously to combat the rise of Nazism before and during the course of the Second World War. This book focuses on the family of Robert and his wife Berta - both born two decades before the end of the nineteenth century - and their six children, five of whom became communists and one who worked as a Soviet agent. The parents, and later their children, rejected and rebelled against their comfortable bourgeois heritage and devoted their lives to the overthrow of privilege and class society. They chose to do this in a Germany that was rapidly moving in the opposite direction. With the rise of German nationalism and then Hitler fascism, the family was confronted with stark choices and, as a result of making these choices, suffered persecution and exile. Revealing how these experiences shaped their outlook and perception of events, this book documents the story of the Kuczynskis for the first time in the English language and is a fascinating biographical portrait of a unique and radical family.

John Golding

release date: Jan 01, 2017
John Golding
John Golding (1929-2012) was a British artist, scholar and curator.Perhaps best known for his seminal book, Cubism: A history and an Analysis 1907-1914 (1959) he actually considered himself primarily a painter and exhibited extensively both in the UK and internationally during a career that spanned almost six decades. In retrospect, his reputation as a notable art historian somewhat, arguably, overshadowed his own practice as an artist. So, this new monograph endeavours to reveal and celebrate the other side of his oeuvre.''Golding''s knowledge of Renaissance painting, especially the great Venetians [...] informed his own work as he moved out of figuration and into abstract canvases in which light was the subject. He painted vertical streaks of colour down his canvases like pleated light (as he put it) and occasionally on, say, a misty blue, he would scatter clusters of gold pigment to reflect the actual light. After the end of the 20th century, he started to structure his paintings so that they appeared to be based on photographs from thousands of feet above the Earth, with ''roads'' and ''bridges'' and ''canals''...'' - Michael McNay, 2012 (The Guardian)Golding''s work was additionally shown alongside Bridget Riley, John Hoyland, Frank Auerbach, Peter Blake and David Hockney in important group exhibitions in London such as, British Painting 74'' at Hayward Gallery and, British Painting 1952-77 at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Equal Citizenship, Civil Rights, and the Constitution

release date: Nov 19, 2015
Equal Citizenship, Civil Rights, and the Constitution
The Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment is arguably the most historically important clause of the most significant part of the US Constitution. Designed to be a central guarantor of civil rights and civil liberties following Reconstruction, this clause could have been at the center of most of the country''s constitutional controversies, not only during Reconstruction, but in the modern period as well; yet for a variety of historical reasons, including precedent-setting narrow interpretations, the Privileges or Immunities Clause has been cast aside by the Supreme Court. This book investigates the Clause in a textualist-originalist manner, an approach increasingly popular among both academics and judges, to examine the meanings actually expressed by the text in its original context. Arguing for a revival of the Privileges or Immunities Clause, author Christopher Green lays the groundwork for assessing the originalist credentials of such areas of law as school segregation, state action, sex discrimination, incorporation of the Bill of Rights against states, the relationship between tradition and policy analysis in assessing fundamental rights, and the Fourteenth Amendment rights of corporations and aliens. Thoroughly argued and historically well-researched, this book demonstrates that the Privileges or Immunities Clause protects liberty and equality, and it will be of interest to legal academics, American legal historians, and anyone interested in American constitutional history.

Overpowered!

Overpowered!
Hypnotism has fascinated and inspired people since the mid-1800s, when entertainers and medical professionals enthusiastically took up this Far Eastern practice. This is the first popular, illustrated history of hypnosis. It tackles the (relatively) reputable aspects of the subject--brain imaging, clinical trials, and hypnotherapy--alongside the smoke and mirrors of stage hypnosis. The author has uncovered intriguing stories about the larger-than-life characters who inhabit the world of hypnosis. From Professors of Mesmerism to Princes of Necromancy, this book explores the different guises of hypnotism as portrayed by pseudo-scientists and showmen alike. It takes a very personal approach to the central questions posed by hypnosis: why do we want to give up our power? Why do we think someone else can change us, if we can''t change ourselves? Why do we want to alter our normal patterns of cognition? Why would anyone go on stage and do what a sweaty guy in a cheap suit tells them to do? An accredited hypnotherapist and performer himself, the author examines the connections between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy or, in other words, the point at which showbiz meets self-help and sleight-of-hand meets scholarly research. The book is practical, informative, and entertaining, and fully illustrated with colorful source material from the archives of the British Library.

Une moderne Antiquité

release date: Jan 01, 2012

Breaking Plates: Fracturing Fictions and Archetypal Imaginings

release date: Dec 13, 2011
Breaking Plates: Fracturing Fictions and Archetypal Imaginings
Four decades ago, archetypal psychology offered a different way of viewing all things psychological. As radical and useful as this move was forty years ago, however, it is time to question the sustainability of tenets like these for our contemporary world. As the highly turbulent 21st Century enters its second decade, it is time to ask ourselves "why archetypes?" and "why images?" This book explores these questions through a variety of topics, ranging from clinical psychology, death, cultural colonialism, paranoia, feminism, ecology, education, capitalism to politics. This book is committed to the fact that an archetypal approach should not estrange us from mundane reality; it should facilitate a stronger, more complex, and more active involvement with it. This is what archetypal studies are setting out to do-yes: to do.
