Devotional Reflections on the Sermon on the Mount

release date: Mar 10, 2022
Devotional Reflections on the Sermon on the Mount
The Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, is the superlative body of religious statements in all literature. It’s the pinnacle substance of the teachings of Jesus, with the Beatitudes being the centerpiece of the discourse. It’s revered for the eloquent and inspiring way it introduces the means to happiness and purpose in life. However, there’s much more to the sermon than inspiration and beauty of expression. In Devotional Reflections on the Sermon on the Mount, author Dr. Charles Lee Holland Jr. offers an interpretation of one of the best-loved and best-known portions of the New Testament. In this devotional, he doesn’t provide a verse-by-verse analysis, but he presents the respective topics individually to emphasize the relevance of the sermon for our time. Holland focuses on showing the abiding influence of the old covenant between God and Israel on one hand and the new covenant between God and his people as taught by Jesus. He shows how the Sermon on the Mount provides ways Christians can truly exercise the light, to present the king of the kingdom, Jesus the Christ. Devotional Reflections on the Sermon on the Mount demonstrates that the teachings of Jesus should be understood as present tense. As you read the Sermon on the Mount, you understand that Jesus continues to speak to his disciples.

Looking Ahead

release date: Aug 04, 2017
Looking Ahead
Looking Ahead considers Christianity in our time as it confronts the crisis of the relevance of the church and the challenge facing biblical theology. The reflections and observations in this book are autobiographical in nature because they mirror the personal perspective of one who for sixty-five years has sought to communicate the Christian faith with intellectual and spiritual integrity. In the process, the author provides personal contemporary interpretations of the tenets of the Apostles Creed and some of the familiar words of our common religious vocabulary. Ultimately, the summary synthesis holds that historic Christianity must and will prevail triumphantly in this era of unparalleled testing.

The Son of God

release date: Dec 04, 2015
The Son of God
This is a multi-view book in which representatives of differing viewpoints make a positive statement of their case, followed by responses from the others, and concluding with a rebuttal by the original author. The topic at hand in this book is the identity of Jesus (also known as Christology). What is the meaning of Jesus's identity as "the Son of God"? Charles Lee Irons argues that the title "Son of God" denotes his ontological deity from a Trinitarian perspective. Danny Andre Dixon and Dustin R. Smith challenge this view from two different non-Trinitarian viewpoints. Smith argues that Jesus is the authentically human Son of God, the Davidic Messiah, who did not possess a literal preexistence prior to his virgin birth. Dixon argues that Jesus is God's preexistent Son in the sense that God gave him life or existence at some undefined point prior to creation. The authors engage the topic from the perspective that reverences the authority and inspiration of Scripture as the final arbiter of this debate. The literature of early Judaism is also engaged in order to try to understand the extent to which the New Testament's Christology may have been influenced by or operated within the context of Jewish conceptions of divine secondary beings as agents of God.

The Righteousness of God

release date: Mar 10, 2015
The Righteousness of God
Advocates of the New Perspective on Paul appeal to the view that "righteousness" in biblical theology is a Verhaltnisbegriff (relational concept). This is the view that "righteousness" does not mean conformity to a norm, nor is it an essentially legal concept; rather, "righteousness" denotes the fulfillment of the demands of a relationship, since the relationship itself is the norm. This relational interpretation of "righteousness" was first put forward by Hermann Cremer in 1899 and exercised a profound influence in biblical scholarship throughout the 20th century. It lies at the root of the New Perspective claim that "the righteousness of God" in Paul is a cipher for God's saving faithfulness to his covenant, a view defended by N. T. Wright, among others. Charles Lee Irons provides a critical examination of Cremer's chief arguments for the relational, covenant-faithfulness interpretation. The author argues instead for the view that "the righteousness of God" in Rom 1:17; 3: 21-22; 10:3; 2 Cor 5:21; and Phil 3:9 is the status of righteousness that comes from God as a gift.

Admiral De Grasse and American Independence

release date: Jun 15, 2014
Admiral De Grasse and American Independence
The average American knows little or nothing of the great service rendered by Admiral de Grasse, a French admiral, to the cause of American independence in the battle off Cape Henry in 1781. The battle off Cape Henry had ultimate effects more important than those of Waterloo. De Grasse’s action entailed upon the British the final loss of the thirteen colonies in America. This biography by Charles Lee Lewis places this supremely important naval battle off the Virginia Capes in its proper historical perspective, and gives de Grasse the full credit for rendering the aid which made possible the capture of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Washington fully recognized this aid, when he wrote to de Grasse following the surrender of Cornwallis and expressed his gratitude “in the name of America for the glorious event for which she is indebted to you.” Without de Grasse’s victory all the military efforts on land made by Rochambeau, Lafayette, and Washington would have been in vain. The battle off Cape Henry was only one of numerous battles fought by this dashing Gallic sea captain. Over fifty years of his long life, 1722-1788, were spent in the service of Louis XV and Louis XVI, in the Mediterranean, in India, on the North American coast, and in the West Indies. He fought in all the wars of his day, the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years’ War, and the War of the American Revolution which developed into a general European struggle.

Out of the Cradle
Where will we get our electricity when the oil and coal are gone? Why should I care? Abundant cheap electricity is a key element in getting and maintaining high human living standards around the globe. Stated another way, electricity is the foundation of modern technology. Without it, we go back to sailing ships and the horse. Anyone who thinks for a moment that we could feed and clothe our 21st century population using 18th century technology is nuts. Everything in your world depends on electricity either directly or indirectly. The food you eat, the water you drink, the car you drive, are all possible because of electricity. This cannot be overstated. Electricity is civilization. The world consumed 20.1 trillion kilowatt hours of energy in 2010, up over 3% from the year before. Of this, 13.9 trillion kw-hrs comes from hydrocarbons, 2.6 trillion from nuclear, and 3.1 trillion from hydroelectric. Earth-bound renewables hardly make a dent. The EIA predicts world net electrical consumption will increase to 25.5 trillion kw-hrs by 2020 and 35.2 trillion kw-hrs by 2035. Even if you don't fully understand the enormity of the numbers, just remember that we are using more energy today than we did yesterday, by a lot. I repeat, where will we get our electricity when the oil and coal are gone? I wrote this book to draw attention to this disaster looming on the horizon. Electrical energy is the one thing our civilization cannot live without and sooner or later the oil and the coal will be gone. Nuclear isn't the answer on many levels and the conventional earthbound alternative energy sources are simply not capable of sustaining our present demand. So what are we to do? I suggest we need to think big now so that we don't crash big later. Building a system of satellites capable of delivering 50 trillion-kilowatt-hours of pollution free solar power from space every year will also produce a robust global economy. It will be like Columbus rediscovering America but instead of just another continent, we will open up other worlds for us to conquer. Open up the High Frontier and we open up our children's future to endless new horizons. There is only one power source capable of meeting humanities energy needs and all future demands, the SUN, and the best place to harness its power is collecting sunlight in SPACE. Without it our civilization will collapse but does America have the political will to even attempt such a project? Or have we already started? Find out when you order your copy of Out of the Cradle.

What's So Good about the Good News?

release date: Mar 01, 2012
What's So Good about the Good News?
The word "gospel" literally means "good news." It is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man's redemption in the death, burial and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. The Bible is full of good news. But there is no greater news than the salvation we have through Jesus Christ. In "What's So Good About The Good News", the author explains why the good news is so good through eight doctrinal elements that are essential to the Christian's faith.
