Historisch verhaal dat zich afspeelt in de tijd dat de Angelsaksische koning Alfred strijd voert tegen de Noormannen. Wulf, een jongen, die opgroeit bij een oude man in een boshut, treedt in dienst van de koning. Zonder dat hij het weet heeft Wulf een kostbare armring in bezit. Zijn vader, een rondtrekkende bard, had de drakenring zoals Merlijn al voorspeld had, verborgen gehouden. Volgens die voorspelling moest koning Arthur de drakenring tijdens de jaren van onrust aan de zangers geven, totdat het rijk in Saksische handen zou komen. Toen de vader van Wulf (die zijn vader nooit gekend heeft) niet terugkeerde uit de oorlog tegen de Noormannen, vond Wulf de ring bedekt met klei in een oude boom. Omdat de ring zo vies was, ziet Wulf niet dat hij een kostbaar sieraad in bezit heeft. Pas later, na ontdaan te zijn van al het vuil, wordt door een inscriptie duidelijk dat de ring eens van koning Arthur was. Door wat de vader ook in de ring heeft gekrast weet Wulf nu wie zijn vader was. Wulf schenkt de ring aan koning Alfred, als teken dat er vrede is gekomen. Als beloning treedt Wulf als harpspeler toe aan het hof van de koning.
