Crossing the Great Divide

release date: Jan 22, 2023
Crossing the Great Divide
In my pursuit of worldly success, I became lost in the darkness of the world. The road I was walking, God gave me signs and detours I choose to ignore. I let the enemy lead me into the dark abyss of life. Then one day, God shined a ray of hope into the darkness and brought me to a dead-end road. He led, I followed, and He brought His lost sheep home. He spoke, I listened, and I heard His voice. “He said, let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee” (Genesis 33:12). He would heal me, our home, marriage, and family. He would bless us through obedience; give me grace I did not deserve. He would teach me to have faith in Him as we walked the white rock path to cross the Great Divide to the other side. He would teach me as we journeyed to the top of the mountain in search of the lone tree atop the mountain.

Grandpa's Children's Stories

release date: Mar 15, 2019
Grandpa's Children's Stories
In this day of technology, children can get on their electronic devices and read stories on their own. However, this method eliminates the parent-child bonding process. These stories were written to allow parents and children to share the opportunity to go into the world of imagination for a brief time and share the precious moments. They are short stories, so they allow for the imagination to take over for a brief period. They were written so that even those with demanding schedules, even single parents, are allowed the time to share some precious moments with their children. My hope is that all will enjoy them, with imagination, and escape into the world of creativity that imagination brings. Imagination, after all, is the catalyst to creativity and invention.

Varina

release date: Apr 03, 2018
Varina
Sooner or later, history asks, which side were you on? In his powerful new novel, Charles Frazier returns to the time and place of Cold Mountain, vividly bringing to life the chaos and devastation of the Civil War Her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects the secure life of a Mississippi landowner. Davis instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history—culpable regardless of her intentions. The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives with “bounties on their heads, an entire nation in pursuit.” Intimate in its detailed observations of one woman’s tragic life and epic in its scope and power, Varina is a novel of an American war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the book is a portrait of a woman who comes to realize that complicity carries consequences.

Nightwoods

release date: Jun 12, 2012
Nightwoods
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Charles Frazier, the acclaimed author of Cold Mountain and Thirteen Moons, returns with a dazzling novel set in small-town North Carolina in the early 1960s. With his brilliant portrait of Luce, a young woman who inherits her murdered sister’s troubled twins, Frazier has created his most memorable heroine. Before the children, Luce was content with the reimbursements of the rich Appalachian landscape, choosing to live apart from the small community around her. But the coming of the children changes everything, cracking open her solitary life in difficult, hopeful, dangerous ways. In a lean, tight narrative, Nightwoods resonates with the timelessness of a great work of art. “Impossible to shake.”—Entertainment Weekly “Fantastic.”—The Washington Post “Astute and compassionate.”—The Boston Globe

Thirteen Moons

release date: Dec 17, 2010
Thirteen Moons
This magnificent novel by one of America’s finest writers is the epic of one man’s remarkable journey, set in nineteenth-century America against the background of a vanishing people and a rich way of life. At the age of twelve, under the Wind moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home. In a card game with a white Indian named Featherstone, Will wins – for a brief moment – a mysterious girl named Claire, and his passion and desire for her spans this novel. As Will’s destiny intertwines with the fate of the Cherokee Indians – including a Cherokee Chief named Bear – he learns how to fight and survive in the face of both nature and men, and eventually, under the Corn Tassel Moon, Will begins the fight against Washington City to preserve the Cherokee’s homeland and culture. And he will come to know the truth behind his belief that “only desire trumps time.” Brilliantly imagined, written with great power and beauty by a master of American fiction, Thirteen Moons is a stunning novel about a man’s passion for a woman, and how loss, longing and love can shape a man’s destiny over the many moons of a life.

Cold Mountain Reading Group Support Kit

Cold Mountain Reading Group Support Kit
One of the most acclaimed first novels in recent memory, Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain is a masterpiece that is at once an enthralling adventure, a stirring love story, and a luminous evocation of a vanished America -- a country where savagery coexists with splendor and human beings contend with the inhuman solitude of the wilderness. Sorely wounded and fatally disillusioned in the lighting at Petersburg, Inman, a Confederate soldier, decides to walk back to his home in the Blue Ridge mountains and to Ada, the woman he loved there years before. His trek across the disintegrating South brings him into intimate and sometimes lethal converse with slaves and marauders, bounty hunters and witches, both helpful and malign. At the same time, Ada is trying to revive her father's derelict farm and learning to survive in a world where the old certainties have been swept away. As it interweaves their stories, Cold Mountain asserts itself as an authentic American Odyssey -- hugely powerful, majestically lovely, and keenly moving. "Charles Frazier's feeling for the Southern landscape is reverential and beautifully composed. He has written an astonishing first novel". -- Alfred Kazin, The New York Review of Books "Extraordinary... A Whitmanesque foray into America: into its hugeness, its freshness into America: into its hugeness, its freshness its scope and its soul". -- The New York Times Book Review "A great read -- a stirring Civil War tale told with epic sweep". -- People "Strikingly beautiful... In its vivid evocation of a time and place, its steady story-telling momentum and its unabashed affirmation of a fiction that takes moral choice seriously, Cold Mountain calls to mind SnowFalling on Cedars". -- Newsday "Heartbreakingly beautiful...elegantly told...down to the last haunting detail". -- John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil "Astonishing...a genuinely romantic saga that attains the status of literature". -- Newsweek
