Fungal endophytes are known sources of biogically active secondary metabolites. In this research study, the diversity and antibacterial activities of fungal leaf endophytes isolated from healthy leaves of mangroves collected in 16 sites in Luzon Island, Philippines were evaluated. Twetny mangrove fungal leaf endophytes (MFLE morphospecies were isolated and identified as Aspergillus niger, A. ochraceus, Cladosporium sp., Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium spp., Nigrospora spp., Penicillium spp., Pestalotiopsis sp., Phialophora sp., and Trichoderma sp. The province of Zambales and the mangroves A. marina, R. mucronata and S. alba had the highest number of MFLE morphospecies and the highest species diversity. Comparison of species similarities between provinces and mangrove hosts showed clustering of the provinces of Zambales and Batangas, and the commonly encountered mangroves A. marina, r. mucronata and S. alba. The MFLE crude culture extracts were also tested for their antibacterial activities. results showed inhibitory activities against S. aureus, M. luteus and M. phlei. partial to no activity was observed against the gram-negative bacteria, K. oxytoca and P. aeruginosa. the MFLE isolates with antibacterial properties were identified as Phialophora sp., Cladosporium sp., Penicillium sp. 3, and Penicillium sp. 4. Finally, TLC detected up to 13 metabolites in the crude culture extracts. TLS-bioautography showed the presence of bioactive metabolites from MFLE. This is the first extensive report of mangrove leaf endophytes from the Philippines.
