A rich literature shows that ethnic discrimination is an omnipresent and highly persistent phenomenon. Little is known, however, about how to reduce discrimination. This study reports the results of a large-scale field experiment we ran together with the Norwegian Football Federation. The federation sent an email to a random selection of about 500 amateur soccer coaches, pointing towards the important role that soccer can play in promoting inclusivity and reducing racism in society and calling on the coaches to be open to all interested applicants. Two weeks later, we sent fictitious applications to join an amateur club, using either a native-sounding or a foreign-sounding name, to the same coaches and to a random selection of about 500 coaches who form the control group. In line with earlier research, we find that applications from people with a native-sounding name receive significantly more positive responses than applications from people with a foreign-sounding name. Surprisingly and unintentionally, the email from the federation substantially increased rather than decreased this gap. Our study underlines the importance of running field experiments to check whether well-intended initiatives are effective in reducing discrimination.

In this paper, we examine how the number of African American and White American coaches in college basketball evolved since 1947. Particularly, we focus on 1973 when the league split up. The separation created asymmetric regulatory requirements. This led to a significant difference in the number of African American coaches. The evidence suggests that less regulated institutions employ fewer African American coaches. The results are time consistent, not clustered geographically, and unrelated to specific institutions. Our results have policy implications for college sports as well as other industries which have similar working conditions.

The investigation of unsteady aerodynamics is becoming a more attractive topic of research in enhancing flight capabilities. Natural flyers such as birds and insects can undergo flight maneuvers that are very difficult or not possible with current aerodynamic understanding. Modeling the unsteady phenomena produced by flapping wings is important to the understanding of these maneuvers, with possible applications to aircraft flight. We investigate reduced-order modeling of the unsteady aerodynamics generated by flapping wings using the two separate approaches of rotational lift and dynamic stall. A low order quasi steady model based on rotational lift and a revised version incorporating dynamic stall are presented. Both concepts are analyzed using simulated results, with experimental data measured with matching kinematics as a basis of comparison. This combined model is then used to conduct parametric studies of the time averaged aerodynamic forces over varying kinematic variables.

"Traditional definitions of aggressive behaviours have emphasized acts of physical and verbal aggression. By labelling behaviours such as gossip, manipulation or social isolation as aggressive acts, the traditional definition of aggression has been challenged and expanded. Consequently, relational aggression has emerged as a prolific field of study. In this context, researchers have examined the characteristics and associations of these behaviours with psychological constructs. Particular attention has been placed on the role of psychological variables in the prediction of relational aggression. In addition, researchers have analyzed the influence of chronological age and sex on the manifestation of relational aggressive acts. This dissertation is comprised of two manuscripts that collectively contribute to the literature by documenting characteristics and predictors of relational aggression and gossip in children between the ages of 6 to 9 years old, as well as the role of chronological age and sex in such associations.The first manuscript in this research program examined whether age moderates the relationship between cognitive factors (theory of mind and attribution of intentions) and relational aggression. Participants (N = 426; 216 boys) between 6 and 9 years of age (M = 97.43 months, SD = 10.98) were asked to complete theory of mind tasks and answer an attribution of intentions questionnaire. Teachers of the students evaluated their students'' social behaviours, including relationally aggressive acts. Results suggest that theory of mind did affect relational aggression, while this association was moderated by chronological age. Specifically, it was found that the association between theory of mind and relational aggression was only significant for younger participants. Taken together, findings from this manuscript partially support the assertion that sophisticated cognitive skills are a prerequisite for indirect acts of aggression. The second manuscript in the current research program examined the role of sex on the relationship between cognitive (theory of mind and attribution of intentions), emotional (empathy) and social (perceived popularity) factors, and gossip. Participants (N = 422; 216 boys) aged between 6 to 9 years old were asked to nominate their best friends, resulting in 211 dyads. Interactions within each dyad were recorded and codified. Differences in predictors of gossip were found across sexes, such that gossip was associated positively with theory of mind and perceived popularity only for boys. None of the examined factors predicted gossip in girls. Results suggest that sharing information was the most common function of gossip; positive gossip was more common than negative gossip; and peers were the most frequent target of this behaviour. All in all, results from the second manuscript suggest that boys and girls engaged in gossip, yet different predictors explain this phenomenon across sexes.Taken together, the findings from the current research program provide empirical support for theoretical discussion about the impact of cognitive, emotional and social factors in the manifestation of relational aggression and gossip. In addition, the results delineate the effects of chronological age and sex on the association between psychological attributes and relational aggression and gossip." --

In a two sectors dynamic model we analyze the process of tourism development based on the accumulation of capital (building of tourism facilities) and the reallocation of land from traditional activities to the tourism sector. The model incorporates the conflict between occupation of the territory by the tourism facilities, other productive activities and availability of cultural, natural and environmental assets that are valued by residents and visitors. We characterize the process of tourism development in two settings: the socially optimal solution and a situation where the costs of tourism expansion are external to the decision makers, where externalities on residents as well as intraindustry externalities are considered. Regarding the optimal solution, we show that it is optimal to limit tourism expansion before it reaches its maximum capacity even in a context where the economic attractiveness of tourism relative to other productive sectors rise continuously. However, in this context and when all the costs of tourism development are externalities the only limit to tourism quantitative expansion is its maximum capacity determined by the availability of land. Finally, we show that excessive environmental degradation from the future generations'' point of view is not a problem of discounting the future but rather a problem of externalities that affects negatively the current and future generations.
